Animals are venomous. Their venom is indeed, poisonous.

I thought venom was venomous and poison was poisonous.

Its really all about the delivery.

Venom is delivered via injection; fang, spine, spur, etc. Ex: venomous snakes, lionfish, stonefish, etc.

Toxins are natural "poisons" that are delivered via absorbtion or ingestion. Ex: poison dart frogs, pufferfish, firebelly toads, etc.

The term "poison" (at least in the medical field) is usually reserved for unnatural toxins; i.e. someone ingesting anti-freeze, or something. IN other words, non-biological.

That's what I thought. So can venom be poisonous?

1: poisonous matter normally secreted by some animals (as snakes, scorpions, or bees) and transmitted to prey or an enemy chiefly by biting or stinging ; broadly : material that is poisonous

I see. WELL I was wrong. lol

It's a confusing issue for a lot of people. I had no idea there even was a distinction, until I started raising snakes.

I'll admit I do like to mess with some people sometimes when they come into the store and ask if any of our snakes are poisonous. I'll loudly proclaim that there isn't a poisonous snake on this planet...and then I'll explain the difference of something being venomous or poisonous.

True, they're often viewed as being synonymous, but I like being a stickler to the details.

Just like snakes "dislocate their jaws" to swallow big prey items.
