    thanks vs reps
Anyone else see a drastic drop in rep points being given out? I know for me its much easier to just "thank" someone on the post, i love that it lists who all has given the thanks but is that hindering the rep points given to anyone?

    just wondering :gj:

I had been pondering the new "Thanks" feature also and had likewise started a thread on it. One thing that I saw while thinking about it was an old post by JLC (if memory serves) concerning rep points. It said that rep points were not intended to be given to someone just because you like the post or agree with the post. More of exceptional criteria were intended for the giving out of rep points. My guess is that the thanks feature was added to be a somewhat lesser form of accolade than are rep points to make rep points a little more special and not given so freely.

The "Thanks" are a more public pat-on-the-back....whereas rep points are only ever seen by the recipient. "Thanks" is also more of a "one click" feature that folks are more likely to use. And yes...they are appropriate to be used for any post you would just naturally want to say "Thank you" to the person posting it. Whereas the rep system is ideally more suited to those exceptional posts. But many people use it for a variety of different reasons, and that is fine, too, so long as there is no abuse of the negative comments.

That being said...there are no particular restrictions on giving out positive reps and if you like the rep system, then by all means please continue to use it. If you continue to use it, then others will, too. :)

To the left of every post is the box that has the author's name and avatar picture and some statistical info. At the bottom of that box is a row of little icons. One of them looks like this: https://ball-pythons.net/forums/them...reputation.gif . When you're looking at a post that you think is worthy of an additional rep point for the author (or that you believe is so bad it is worth taking away a rep point)....click on that button and it will bring up a little pop-up box where you choose to leave a positive or negative rep point (it is positive by default) and you fill in a reason why you're giving the point. :)

At the top of this and all pages there is a NAV bar with several options. there is one called (User CP). If you click on that then go to the bottom of the page it will show you your rep points. ;)

Quick question about all this to the admin...

Is there a certain number of rep points needed before another "rep bar" is added in your quick profile.

Also, a little off topic, but how does rep correspond to user, veteran, etc.

Everyone starts with one green dot. For every 100 rep points, you gain another green dot.

errr...that's not right - I'll have to dig some more.

In addition to dots, as you gain rep points, the comment that pops up when you hoover over someone's dots changes. For example, in this very thread, there are different comments for the one dots - that's determined by how many points you have.

Allright, so the thread that Connie still linked to still leaves one open question. Who has the authority to give actual rep points. I have recieved I think 5 or 6 positive points, but only 3 of them count, as they were from super-mod's. So, is it only mods and admin's points that count, or only people with 2+ dots? Epic confusion.

It's based on the person's post count and length of membership (30 days and x amount of posts). I'd have to find out the number of posts.

30 days AND x posts, or just need to meet one or the other?

I ask like it really matters, but really I am just curious dont strain yourself trying to entertain me.

I sometimes get those greyed dots, and it's always from someone that had just joined or doesnt post very often like Robin said. Anyone can give reps. :)

All neg reps that were given BEFORE we made them show who there were from defaulted to "testaccount". Any "zero-point" (from a new user) neg reps (because they can't count as neg) will show "testaccount".

All neg reps given NOW do show who left them.

I had another thought on the rep points vs thanks question, which goes along with what ADEE says here.

When you get a rep point, you can always quickly and easily go to your User CP page, and see who gave it to you, and it even has a link to the post that was rep'd.

When you get a thanks, the only way to find out any of this info is to go through all of your old posts and check the bottom of each one.

Like ADEE, I really liked reading the rep point comments. But even more than that, I thought it was valuable to know which of my posts were receiving rep. I'd like to be able to (easily) figure that out with thanks too.

Is there anyway to see a list of which of your posts have received thanks similar to the list of where the rep points came from? If not currently, is that something that can be added?

    For you:

    http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...earchid=760963

It's in the Statistics section of your user profile.

I clicked on that link and it told me "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms."

However, I did find it in the statistics section of the user profile.

    Thanks for pointing that out!
