The Chickens are coming:)

I really wanted to get some nice Chickens this year, but time flew by and with the move I just never had time. I just placed my order today and they were mostly sold out of everything so the only things coming are:

15 red stars and 15 cornish x rocks I really wanted a nice sized group of Araucana's but will have to wait until February. They won't be here until November 6th or so, but I'll get pics up once they arrive. PS, don't tell my wife I ordered them I like to surprise her (can't say no if they are already here is my thinking). I did not tell her about the mastiff until I walked in the door with 50 lbs of puppy in my arms:D

uhm.. congrats on the chickens. My question however is, how often do you sleep on the couch? :rofl: :giggle:

My wife is truly the single greatest person on the planet. She will simply look at me, smile, laugh and ask when I'll have time for them. She will shake her head and ask me to help with the dishes and all will be good. I'm going to approach it with the whole home grown organic egg pitch and she'll love it:please:

lol, thats kewl. yeah my hubby is like that too.. Just rolls his eyes and goes.. whatever.

Yeah, it's pretty great to be with someone like that. My BF will encourage me to add more snakes to my collection all the time (mind you, he wants nothing to do with them). He knows they make me happy. :D

But now I am gonna have 30 more ANIMALS to care for!!!
And we have to start fencing in an area..........Blah!!:taz:

Oh, congrats. My husband looked at me cross eyed when I mentioned chickens. They're awesome, and so soothing. :aww:

I don't know why, but I hate fresh chicken eggs. A friend of ours has chickens and is always giving my wife eggs. GROSS!

I eat a TON of eggs. Sometimes a dozen or more a day. Great protein! However, I just can't get myself to eat the fresh ones. To me they are very strong.

So Neil, does this new place have some land? That's what I want. I eventually want about 10 acres. I would love to move down by Greg.

It's got to be great for him. When I mess up I have to let my girlfriend get a new dog. Snakes would be so much easier. :D

Congrats! I absolutely love chickens, very soothing, and excellent source of food.

Fresh eggs DO taste different, personally, I think way better. Factory-Farmed eggs are so bland and blah to me. But that's just my opinion, I know alot of people are turned off of the fresh eggs, and they can take getting used to.

Do you plan on butchering the cornish? Be aware, these have a bad habit of keeling over dead, as they're bred to grow freakishly fast for butchering, and often don't live long past that time. I've had some prove me wrong, but its something to be aware of.

Terrible picture, but here is my Rhode Island Red rooster and his favorite hen, a Barred Rock. (This combination creates the Black Sex Link if I remember correctly.)

Larry, fresh eggs are the best, they've got so much more flavor. I know that this sounds weird or lazy on my part, but I love eggs HOWEVER not once in the last 5 years have I made store bought eggs for myself once everyone else leaves for the day. With my own Chickens in the backyard, with my own eggs, I'd make them everyday as there is just more enjoyment to me to eat something you (sorda made yourself:)) I don't have a ton of land as I kinda had to buy something quickly. But behind the house I've got a thin piece of land that actually works very well for what I need. Its only 56 ft wide but 400 ft deep.

Neil, with the way that the economy is headed Cornish hens may become quite popular as a Thanksgiving meal staple. You are probably on the right track.

Very nice pair, how many do you have?
The Cornish are for butchering. I'm not sure if thats something that I've actually got any real interest in however because of time of year and what's available I figured I'd try it. The cornish you can only give food to for 12 hours and then must take it away for 12 hours as all they do is eat. They will drop dead of heart attacks at 4 weeks old if you leave feed in there all the time. By 49 days they get to 5 or 6 lbs and are ready to be butchered.

As soon as they arrive, I'll get some pictures posted.

I don't have too many at the moment, we're working on our property and hopefullyI'll have bigger pens then.

I have four roosters, which is a bit much, but a couple might have a appointment with the freezer soon. One Rhode Island Red (pictured above), two Mottled Houdans which are cool, they have topknots and extra toes, and a silkie rooster.

As for hens/pullets, I have two Barred Rocks, three Easter Eggers, and eight Buff Orphingtons. Those are definetely becoming my favorite; they have nice fat bodies, grow at a good rate, lay good eggs, and are pretty friendly.

I do also have three Toulouse geese, a Khaki Campbell duck hen, a Saxony duck drake, and an unsexed Muscovy duck.

And that's just the poultry . . . :P

I so wish my guy was like that.. I told him that I wanted atleast 5 ball pythons and he was like " Are you Crazy?!??!" .... No one it seems gets into what I'm into. I am an outcast but what can I say I love him soooooo much and would never do anything he disliked. after all before I had my dream about being a great Ball python breeder, my dream was being his wife and the mother of his children. I love him so much I just wish there was something that I am into that he would get into.....

Cool! I have 3 Red Star hens myself; they are great layers (though ours are mainly pets, and free range; and our roosters eat their eggs.) They are mainly retired layers form a nearby farm.. they went nuts at first when exposed to things they had never seen suchas grass, dirt, and the blue sky (they were penned in the barn for their 2 years at life.)
