It's LOSE, not LOOSE!!!
If I see someone type "loose" one more time I am going to LOSE it, just completely snap. I know this is the web, and I kn0w ppl tipe liek th1s, zomg!!!1!1!! but for some reason "loose" really gets on my nerves more than anything else. I don't know why, but every time I see it I feel a little part of me die. The worst is when I see people with totally great spelling and grammar use it. I'm starting to think people actually believe that's the correct spelling.
So, what about everyone else? What are your pet peeves on the forums/web?

As an English major, and a grammar freak, I'm totally with you. The one that bothers me the most is when people mistake "your" and "you're". If you're not sure, just say the whole thing rather than the contraction. Its not "your stupid." Its "you are stupid." Hence, "you're."
Actually, I had a little funny list of grammar rules in my sig here once, and I got jumped on by everyone. They said they felt offended and whatnot. Sorry, it's not my fault you can't understand elementary English rules, and its definitely not my fault that you feel the need to put down everyone who does.

darn thanks... and quote. Clicked the wrong button to post.
What was your sig line? if you dont mind me asking?
Spelling bothers me. Punctuation, not so much. ( i use it randomly, and only in certain words and such things) Granted i type very quickly and i do not look, so sometimes i might mess up here or there, and sometimes my brain just does not work! :) i try to go back and correct the error if i spot it though.

Did you intend on spelling that correctly and using the correct form of it? Because you did. -lol-

Re: It's LOSE, not LOOSE!!!
Since I have been involved on internet forums I have seen "loose used for "lose" and "prolly" used for "probably" so uniformly that I supposed that it must be internet jargon.

Yeah, it seems like I hit a nerve here. I don't know why people get so defensive. I'm not calling anyone dumb, or asking anyone to stop doing it. I don't really care about grammar, spelling, and sentence structure in any other ways. There is just something about "loose" that really annoys the heck out of me. There's no reasonable way to explain it. I simply hate it.
Make fun of me if you want, but I guarantee every one of you has little dumb pet peeves that are also petty and insignificant. Most are just too embarassed to admit them.

Re: It's LOSE, not LOOSE!!!
This thread is absolutely hilarious, I love rants about everyday non-sensicals!
Let's see...what grinds me gears:
I guess the only grammar-ish things that bug me are "dat" for "that" and the word "hataz" for "haters".

You guys must really hate me LOL I cant help it, I was born a bad spelling and cannot word things. I was actually thinking of putting my phone number in my sig:P

Re: It's LOSE, not LOOSE!!!
Honestly, I hate when people don't know how to talk properly. Even on the internet.
Spelling doesn't bother me too much, it's more of when people use absolutely no capitalization or punctuation.
because then their sentence is one big sentence and it's goes like this never ending spheal of doom that should be stopped because eventually it turns into a huge paragraph that doesn't make any sense because there are no periods and usually they are lazy about spelling too so it endz up liek thies two
When I can't read what the person is trying to say, then I will tell them to use grammar or at least try to.
Otherwise, I will personally use the best grammar that I can myself, but I try not to bug people about it too much. It just looks sloppy to me.
-
Re: It's LOSE, not LOOSE!!!
I cringe when I see then used as than, or the other way around. They're, their and there get me too. Lastly, "should of"...it's should HAVE. I should have ignored this post and not answered.
Spelling mistakes (typos) don't bother me as much as grammar mistakes do. I get a lot wrong but like to think I'm not totally out of the ballpark. I think it just boils down to laziness but sometimes I truly have no clue what people are even trying to say.

Re: It's LOSE, not LOOSE!!!
Lose/loose bothers me too. Along with there/their/they're and your/you're than/then.
And the mispelling of the word tongue! It really shouldn't bug me so much but it drives me absolutely insane! Oh well!

Re: It's LOSE, not LOOSE!!!
...but what I'm saying is...you know what I'm saying?
One brown bear lost all his hair
While rubbing a tree outside his lair
Along came a cat
Who was smarter than that
And totally lost it laughing at furless Ursa
The moral of the story...
Rubbing it too much might lead to nakedness:taz:

Re: It's LOSE, not LOOSE!!!
spelling/word usage mistakes don't squick me, but they seem to have an effect on how seriously I consider the actual meaningful content of the words i'm reading.
This is just the way i operate by default. If i somehow already know the person is really intelligent and just happens to suck at typing, of course that would change my perception. I also seem to be able to cut ESL people a lot of slack too (which is good considering how advanced *my* second and third language spelling and grammar are :rolleyes:).

Re: It's LOSE, not LOOSE!!!
An extra $.02 from a fellow herper who abhores poor grammar...
I generally agree with the OP, although I'll gladly admit that I'm irked by many more grammatical mishaps than just the "loose/lose" thing.
First of all, the line between a simple typo and an actual misunderstanding on how something is spelled is pretty blurred. I mean, I'm sure we've all spelled "breaded" dragon before or just forgot to put an apostrophe when needed, right? Lord knows, I've done it.
But some of this stuff is elementary. We learned the differences between "lose" and "loose" in grade school, just as we learned the differences of: there, they're, their, your, you're, been (not "benn!"), etc, etc, etc. Yeah yeah, most of us still understand what is being said, but what it says about the poster is one of the following things:
- never actually learned the difference in the first place, in which I blame whatever piss-poor education they recieved as a child
- they learned it once, but because 90% of our society is stupid and never picks up a book once in a while, they forgot...so when they do have to try and communicate by the written word, they're grossly out of practice
- they simply are too lazy to care
Someone once made the argument that some people are handicapped and proper grammar isn't a strong suit of theirs. In some cases, maybe...but IMHO, if you can get online, use the internet to find a forum, read the directions and create your account and start posting, using the basic grammar you learned in grade school shouldn't be that big of a hassle.

I couldn't agree more. I think that people are starting to care less and less about proper spelling and grammar. I actually read an article not too long ago about some professor in the UK who truly believed (this is on a college level mind you) that rather than mark off for incorrect spelling, we should adapt the English language to include common misspellings as "alternate" spelling. I wish I could find the article again, but I have tried in vain. I remember reading it on foxnews.com. I just couldn't believe what I was hearing. Essentially this professor believes that we should adapt our language to view spelling errors as acceptable rather than enforce the established rules of the language. In my opinion, either our early education system is going downhill fast, or in the age of the internet, we've stopped caring about menial things like spelling, punctuation and grammar as long as we get the general point. Does anyone else remember English studies somewhere around the third grade? In the English language, the entire meaning of a sentence can be changed simply by adding or changing a single punctuation mark.
Sorry for the mini-rant. This is also a HUGE pet peeve of mine. Seriously people, if you're old enough to get on the computer, go online, register for the forum, read and post in threads, you can obviously speak English. You should also be able to write how you speak. When I personally get to a post and the first sentence is broken English or "L33T" speak, I will pass right by it. If you can't take the time to write your post in proper English, I won't waste my time giving you an intelligent reply...

Amen honey. And I'm not just saying that. I completely agree. The more we let people slide on grammar and punctuation, the less intelligent we seem. Eventually, people are going to BE less intelligent because of it. (Huge pet peeve of mine too)

Re: It's LOSE, not LOOSE!!!
The thing that really irks me is when people use "seen" wrong.
It is NOT "I seen that" or "I seen this" You can't "seen" anything.
It's "I saw this" or "I saw that"
"Seen" is "Have you seen my dog?" "seen" is a participle, figure it out people.

Interesting thread. I agree with lose/loose and your/you're. Always bugged me and always will.
However, none of those things beat the below text taken from another forum I frequent. I will never understand how anyone could type/think in this manner...

I agree with both of you!! Of course people find it offensive because some people don't really care if they spell and have the grammer of a 5 year old. My pet peeves are when people think they are better than me just because they have been doing something longer(I realise they might know alittle more than me but they are not better than me). I am one of those people who research until my brain turns to mash. I quite literally HATE people that get an animal and havent done a lick of research on its behalf. I also HATE people that think that once the animal gets to big they will just get rid of it. I very strongly disike people that won't even give snakes a chance. But my greatest pet peeve is when people try to tell me that I'm a devil worshipper (I'm a Goddess worshipping Pagan). You can tell I am a Sagitarius Snake because I do not tolerate ignorance very well. I may seem cynical, that may be so but look deep inside yourself and you will see that you too HATE stupid people. But given our lives we all are Stupid at one point whether to us or to others.

Gotta tell ya, the above is a pretty ignorant statement. Also fairly pretentious.
You have the nerve to tell me who I hate? And that it is ok because you do?
You "quite literally HATE" people that don't research as you do?
You dislike people based on the choices, which have nothing to do with you, they have made regarding snakes. Excellent criteria there. Do you step on worms because the make snakes look slimy?
Perhaps you spoke in a rush, but I doubt it.
You've got some serious issues that you may not be seeing though your lenses, coated with arrogance and hubris as yours seem to be.

Re: It's LOSE, not LOOSE!!!
asplundii, thank you for pasting that. I think that person should not be allowed to use the internet. It was painful to even read a sentence. Not to mention I had no idea where one sentence ended and another began.
I seriously think that everyone needs to read over everything they type, especially on a forum, or at least get firefox with spell check. Grammar and spelling don't bother me much because I espect it on the internet, but sometimes it is just excessive. If you can't spell words correctly in your thread title, then you shouldn't create a thread at all.
argh!
-
Re: It's LOSE, not LOOSE!!!
I'm finding the accidental spelling and grammar errors in this thread to be hilarious!
People call me a grammar nazi sometimes, but I'm far from it. I always try to use correct spelling and grammar, and get annoyed when others don't, but I'm not overly critical, either.
Of course, one of my friend's uses "board" instead of "bored", spells my name wrong half the time, and spells my sister's name wrong all the time. And she's a lit major! Lets see how bored she is when I whack her upside the head with this loose board, lol.
-
Re: It's LOSE, not LOOSE!!!
Its not just that people goof up and don't use the correct spelling/grammar. It's a reflection on society in general. It's now pretty much acceptable to be mediocre ("That's okay, Timmy. 27th place is still awesome!"). We almost encourage people to be dumb because we don't want to offend them. Each generation is getting less and less smart. I don't even know why teachers still hand out grades if everyone is going to pass anyway.
Screw that! You know what's better than 27th place? FIRST place! People need competition, it's how we achieve our goals and dreams. Keep telling folks it is okay to be "average" and soon, that is what everyone will be: average.

Wow, this thing is going way farther than I had expected! Good to see a little more support from the pro-proper spelling side. After the first few responses I figured I better just shut my mouth and let the thread die.
I think I'll start posting my "insignificant complaints" more often. ;)

Re: It's LOSE, not LOOSE!!!
Okay, just to play devil's advocate, here's a bit of Olde English from around 1000 AD (taken from the Wikipedia article). Anyone who is really serious about grammar mistakes should probably speak primarily in Olde English, since so much of the evolution of the English language has been by grammatical "mistakes"
Quote:
Cnut cyning gret his arcebiscopas and his leod-biscopas and Þurcyl eorl and ealle his eorlas and ealne his þeodscype, twelfhynde and twyhynde, gehadode and læwede, on Englalande freondlice.
Yes, that IS English!
