    SnakeBytesTV-Too many snakes???
We show you a little of my buying spree over the last couple of months and get my crews take on what they think about it. Chewy finds out if a snake that gets handled is tamer then one that does'nt:) To watch the show just go to: www.youtube.com/snakebytestv please comment, rate and appreciate and never forget to subscribe! You can also join the shows community at: www.snakebytes.tv (lots of changes coming on the site!). As always we appreciate all the support. Brian(BHB) and the crew

    Brian~ Great episode!! I do have a question/comment though.

In the segment "Ask the Breeder" you discussed feeding in the cage vs. in a feeding tub. You mentioned that it was not a bad idea for people with just a few snakes to feed in a separate tub so the snake does not think of the keeper as food.

I disagree with this and would ask that you look to your own collection as proof of this not happening. You feed all of your snakes in their own containers, and I don't get the impression that any of the snakes held on any sort of regular basis perceive the keeper as food. Is this true?

In my limited experience, and having only 13 ball pythons and 3 boas, I feed all of them in their own environments and have never had a snake mistake me for their prey item on non-feeding days. Of course, I don't smell like a rodent on non-feeding days and so this might have something to do with that! ;)

So, I wonder if you really believe that feeding a snake in their own enclosure leads to the snake perceiving the keepers hand as prey-- on non-feeding days and when the keeper has no rodent smell on them...?

Thanks for taking the time to read this... I'm not a morning person so I hope that this is coherent enough!

    Take care, McKinsey

I do agree with you for the most part. I don't think that our snakes look us as food, but I do think in our facility when the cage opens the first thing that our animals think is they are getting fed. More often that not when the cage opens food is introduced. So it's more of a stimulus response then them viewing us as food. One of the things that sucks about doing vids like this is you don't always articulate your point the way that you mean to. I'm sorry if it came off the wrong way and in looking back at it now I see your point. Darn videos:) Thanks, Brian(BHB)

    Nice pickups, Brian!

I don't always comment in these threads, but I _always_ enjoy SnakeBytes! (Chewy has made me LOL with enthusiasm over the last few weeks - he's a really good sport!)

Weekends, I host birthday parties and do guided tours at the local public aquarium. A few weeks ago, I listened to myself talking and heard something different about my speech patterns. It took a moment to sort out what was going on - I'd picked up some of your contagious enthusiasm, and it was filtering out as I spoke; some of your cadences had entered my voice!

    Thanks for all you do!

Perhaps you could run a 'Fact or Fiction' on this using snakes that are handled and have not been conditioned to 'open tub- receive food'??

Here on this forum we have a lot of beginner snake keepers who have been told to feed outside of the enclosure for the reason you suggest. Many members here are quick to point out that they feel moving the snake to a different enclosure, and then back again, actually increases snakey stress and increases the likelihood of the keeper getting tagged.

    Oh Chewy.....

Brian I really love this week's show!

When I had about 10 snakes I used to feed them outside of their enclosures and they did great. The twitchy snakes still tried to bite me and the calm snakes did not try to bite. Now I have 38 snakes and I feed inside the enclosure and they do great. The twitchy snakes still try to bite me and the calm snakes do not try to bite. My opinion is if your snake has a great feeding response, feed it wherever you want. If the feeding response sucks, feed it in the enclosure and don't mess with the snake or move anything around inside the enclosure.

As for the snake myths, I think it woud have been a lot more relatable if you were able to use two of the same species of snake but I think it was right for the most part... although in my experience some of my snakes are pissy as hell and the others are totally calm and I handle them all the same, which is very little.

My original corn snake acts just like the one in that video. Flightly, musky, but doesn't really bite.
She wasn't always like that though. For a year or so, I neglected to handle her very much, which was purely my fault.

I know thats truth first hand, but some snakes just have nasty attitudes no matter how much they are handled.

I agree with your points on the feeding. I think will Ball pythons exspecially they don't do well in a feeding bin. It's hard to cover so many types of snakes in one segemnt. For instance Boas a lot of the times are better to feed in a feeding bin, while Balls aren't. My point is I have to be more careful to consider a segment before I run with it. We try our hardest to put out good info, but we do make mistakes like this from time to time. We're all learning and I do appreciate everones suggestions. Please keep them coming:) Brian(BHB)

    Great show as usual bro!
As you have mentioned the type of snake has alot to do with not only feeding but handling too.

What would an episode of snakebytes be without Chewy taking one for the team. Atta boy Chewy, we love when you bleed!;)

    Great episode!

and my take on feeding in or out of the cage is the same as brians in the video. The snakes that I clean at work are all fed in the cage and most have a good feeding response and I have to "let them know" food is not coming when I take them out. Like also mentioned the type of the snake is a huge factor as well. I have a brb and always fed him out of the cage and its no prob taking him out but getting him out of the feeding tub is always a little tricky. I feed my balls in the cage though with no problem.

btw, no mention of the leo geckos:D

I love your shows. Chewy is a great sport and is comical, I love when he gets bit. Esp the episode where he got tagged on the nose LOL! But could you tell a newbie such as myself how do you quarantine all of those new snakes?:)

I anxiously await each edition of snake bytes

How many snakes do you guys have on average? It seems like your racks just go on and on and on.

You know there seems to be a lot of discussion about which bite hurts more. Maybe chewy could do a special on which hurts more

Great episode B. I gotta say though, Chewy must be so hot wearing all those shirts with that gray sweater on underneath :D. All I could think when I was watching him take all those off was, "please God, no make him keep the last shirt on!" lol.

I love all the snakes that you picked up especially those striped corns (all what 200 of them lol). Again great show and as always great info even if some people might disagree with the feeding in a separate bin method. I for one do not feed in a separate bin but I could see where it might be beneficial with more agressive species.
