Febreze Air filter- Nope, it doesn't work

In my snake room I have a few breeder colonies of asf's. Now they dont stink like regular mice and rats but every now and they you do get a wiff of something.

Whether its the garbage bag of fresh snake poo or the bag full of freshly cleaned out asf bedding that smells so nice, I'm not sure... But what I do know is that I picked up the above odor eliminatior and a half hour later the room smells like there's nothing in it.

    I am amazed.

I gave in! I admit, we broke down and finally tried this little thingy out. Winter is coming and I had been debating whether or not to leave my window fan in for exhaust in the rat room. Well, just for safety we took it out when we went to chicago. We cleaned the rat tubs and they were by themselves for 2 days with no fan exhaust.

We came home from Chicago and yes, the rat room STUNK! (Amazing, I know).

So, we bought the little air purifier recommended. Stuck it in the rat room, and ZERO difference.

Like I expected, this thing is worthless if you have more than one bin of 4 rats. I didn't expect a $15 dollar machine to work, and it really didn't.

It's a simple carbon filter over a slow moving fan. A year ago I had built myself a much larger filter much like this using several layers of carbon filter on a bathroom fan to little avail. I should have known this wasn't going to help.

So people, if you want true odor control, buy yourself a heavy duty large air filter with carbon for odor, or use an exhaust fan, (which truly does work!!)

Forgot to mention, my rat room is about 11 x 7. Very small.

I was a little sceptic about it myself, I couldn't see how such a little thing could make my huge snake room smell better.

That is odd. It works perfectly for me and my room.

Did you cut out the middle of the plastic covering to get the most air circulation? I did that on recommendation of mcavana?

Because ever since I installed the frebreze filter my rat room/snake room hasnt stunk one bit. I have 4 breeding groups of 1.4 and a full 20 gallon long filled with weeners plus the snakes. 2 racks full...

Like I said, the design is simple. It's a single carbon cloth filter than can be purchased in any store. I had used that very simple design in making my own larger and more powerful fan over a year ago, and that did very little for odor control. (and that was only for 14 rats and their weaners)

I have another idea in the works, and I plan on trying it out once I get around to making it so I can take the fan out of the window.

This one really just does not work for me and my needs. I have a pretty good nose and around 40 breeders and many weaners at all time. It really did nothing for smell at all.

You wouldn't believe me until you came to my house, but my rat room does not smell when I have the exhaust fan in 24/7. Just shutting off the fan made the room smell like a pig pen.

Are we talking about Rats or ASFs?

The numbers I just gave off hand are Domestic rats, I also have a bunch of ASF's running around as well with 3 groups having around 45-50 pups in their tubs at all times, not to mention the grow up tanks. ;)

I will take pictures of my setup, I bought an air purifier with a hepa3 filter and bought some active carbon and made an additional filter for it. 0 smell! But I do not have a large setup yet.

I told you, this is the way to go! http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=55186

I just refilled one of these with fresh carbon for about $10 after more than a year, and it keeps on working like the first day I made it.

Connie I believe you the best thing is an exhaust fan. Even just a box fan blowing air out of the room works awesome.

Ahh, I just don't have the heart to pay that much money for that one piece if it doesn't work for me. :tears:

I am putting off buying an actual air filter because I know how much dust my rats kick up, and I would be buying HEPA filters up the wazoo! :rolleye2:

I have to go out and sweep off the dust on the window screen from my fan every 2 weeks or so. :P

I tried one of those ionic breeze machines, but it just couldn't handle the amount of dust the rats kick up.

LOL, connie, I could have told you that an air filter would not work for you!

I use the febreez filter and it works... but it only works for a short period of time. Obviously an exhaust fan is the only real solution, but for some of us, that is not an option!!!!

:8: Thanks Mike! Making me go out and buy knick knacks and doo dads.

It's okay, Chris wants to use it in the snake room, so he can have it.

I used that idea, but didnt want to spend $30 or whatever on that one filter, so this is what I did

The only thing I bought besides the air purifier was the activated carbon and the white mesh stuff, total of like $6.50

It works great and I leave it on 2, you can feel the air moving around the room.

littleindiangirl, the large dust particles will never make it to the hepa filter! especially with my setup lol

Looks like a great idea. How well does it work? I'm working on a prototype can filter using screen and 4" PVC tubing with a blower from a central A/C unit. Sort of an industrial version of the one in the DIY. I just need to find a place to get the activated carbon in bulk.

Edit: I didn't read the last part of your post. I see it works good.

It works great for just one room, If I ever did have a room dedicated to more feeders I would just buy a larger air purifier and do the same setup, with an exhaust fan.

I have an idea something like that too, but not with the PVC. Maybe I can cross ideas on you to see what you think of it.

my first idea was to take some wire and form a cylinder then take some cloth mesh around that, put the active carbon then some more mesh with pvc on the outside with holes so that the air purifier would push all the air into the active carbon. The way I did it was so much easier and cheaper.
