some people are just plain dumb
alright so im not oblivious to all of the bad reps that my dogs breed has been given and i completely understand why some people are afraid of them(by the way im talking about pitbulls) but i was out walking my new little boy(he is 10 weeks today) and were starting to walk him on a leash so he gets used to it, but either way the whole day people were giving him compliments on how good he looks and that he was the sweetest little thing so on and so on, until this one woman and her daughter , it started off alright they came up asked if they could pet him and were loving on him until she asked what breed he was( stupid me said "pit bull") and she yanked her daughter away and proceeded to tell me that i was endangering society by having him on the streets, and that next time she saw me with him she would make sure he would never be on the "streets" again, i just grabbed him and walked away, Now i just want to make sure you know the dog did nothing at all . he just sit there and let them pet him,
So did i do something wrong? should i lie and tell everyone he is a "stafford shire terrier" i mean what would you do? and just so everyone can see how vicious my dog is here is a pic

Re: some people are just plain dumb
It is a very sad thing indeed that people act this way. I don't know how animal registration works in the states, but if that had happened to me I would have called the humane society to report HER for threatening the well being of my pet. (I have a Pitt bull too)
-
Re: some people are just plain dumb
people are idiots.
I've never had a dog before, but even I know that pit bulls' reputation is exaggerated beyond belief.
The animal shelter near where I went to college had the sweetest dog I'd ever met, super friendly if a little shy until she got a moment to get to know someone. She was a pit bull.
My cousin's mutt has some pit bull in her too, and is also super sweet. In fact, I have never met a pit bull that was mean.
-
Re: some people are just plain dumb
I've come to the conclusion that people are retarded. There's nothing wrong with pitbulls, and certainly nothing wrong with you telling her what his true breed is. In fact, it's educational to people who have more than half a brain cell, because they learn that not all pitbulls are nasty like the media likes to portray. Either way, adorable pup, even if one moron thinks he's a menace to society.
I would trust my son near a pitbull, rottweiler or any similar breed LONG before I would trust my son near a chihuahua. They're nasty, but since they're small apparantly nobody notices...

Re: some people are just plain dumb
as far as calling the humane society i was so tempted but i just bit my tounge and the sad thing about it is and i hate to sound like this, i couldnt care less if the mom doesnt like my dog, but the daughter is the one thats going to make the diffrence and now that " mommy" has voiced her two cents about the breed, well the little girl might tell her friends and then they will tell their friends and soner than you know it i have 50 plus junior high schoold students writing to the mayor on how these dogs should be banned! god i wish i lived on island sometimes

Re: some people are just plain dumb
It's one part ignorance, one part sensationalism in the media. ANY dog that's been severely mistreated has a chance of becoming viscious. It's obviously not a good idea to raise a wiener dog or Chihuaha if the name of the game is dog fights/guard dog. I got a look like that from some prissy mom when I brought my old rat to Petco to buy food for him. He was the kindest, most intelligent little guy ever! I miss him :(
-
Re: some people are just plain dumb
and i completly understand that as well, but im not and never will going to fight my dog( i know you werent accusing me of that,, but i just thought id calirfy now) and my other two pits are as sweet as bunnys! not the bunny from the holy grail though " look at the teeth on it" lol
-
Re: some people are just plain dumb
It just sucks that some people can't see past the media...I guess the saying has some validity - one bad apple ruins it for the rest of them. No one wants to hear any of the millions of good stories about Pitbulls, just the rare bad ones :( I've never been scared of any dog, and I've wrestled with Rotts, and a big 200 pound English Bulldog. Both were from good homes. I hope to be in your situation one day, with multiple beautiful Pitbulls :)

Re: some people are just plain dumb
Oh yeah, society is really in danger with that big bad Pitbull. Can't you see it in his ferocious eyes?Nice lookin' little guy you have there.:gj:

Re: some people are just plain dumb
I had an experience like this once. I took my pit to a local petsmart and a woman and her daughter were walking around and I heard the little girl ask her mom if she could pet my dog. The mother immediately said NO thats a mean dog without even asking me or knowing my dog at all. I went up to the girl with my pit and said you can pet her, as I looked at the mom with a slight grin on my face. I told the little girl to open her hand and come from underneath to rub my dogs neck. My pit was wiggling her tail the whole time.
Ignorance is always going to be in the world, it's just educating people that will make it a little better. For the issue that you had. I would just forget about that woman you will probably never see her again.
-
Re: some people are just plain dumb
I agree with all the comments regarding people's lack of understanding for some breeds. The fact does remain that pits ARE the breed of choice amongst dog fighting people and as a pit owner it will be good to let the uneducated remarks slide off your back and try to take the time to educate anyone on the wonderful side of this breed also.
I would like to address why you have taken your 10 week old puppy out in public while he's still so young. Is he already fully vaccinated? Puppies are so susceptible to picking up virus's during this very tender age while they are building up immuniities to disease while the natural immunity they get from the mothers is fading away. To be taken seriously as a pit owner you must be responsible at all times and put the needs of your puppy tops. Wait till he's completed all his shots before taking him out and risking exposure.
I bet he is one CUTE puppy!! At 10 weeks they are still so "mushy" and curious about every little new thing in their world.
-
Re: some people are just plain dumb
Now , I want to start off stating I am not defending ignorance. Everyone has a fear of something.............snakes, insects, spiders (me) lizards, cats or dogs. I don't paticularly care for spiders in my home and depending on the size ( the little guys in the corners are left alone) usually my husband will relocate outside. When viewing animals at expos I pass by the T's quickly without saying a word, not voicing that they a re dangerous, disgusting or whatever. Picking up your puppy and walking away was, IMO the absolute best way to handle that lady's ignorance. Arguing with someone like that usually only results in frustration. Every one has a right to be scared of something, whether it is a rational or irrational fear but voicing it the way some do is rude and sets a very bad example if any children are around. Unless your dog does something illegal, just remember there is nothing anyone can do to take the dog away from you. Enjoy the darling little guy, teach him good manners and he will set a good example for the breed. When I was younger and the kids were growing up we had several Dobies, a Rottie and two pitbulls so I know the prejudice you are dealing with and now when folks at work hear I have snakes it is a similar reaction. Nothing I can say will change their minds and I choose not to force my pets or thoughts on them.

I would have told her, hey, he's a pup, hes not going to harm anyone, and maybe "they shouldnt allow you and your daughter to walk the streets either, or even give you air to breathe" that would shut them up.
Not all pit bulls are bad, only the ones who get neglected or used for fighting etc... or if they dont get proper training, if they get used to kids at an early age like a puppy, they wont do harm to the children
-
Re: some people are just plain dumb
i really agree with everyone on how i wouldnt be able to change her mind even if i could, and as for the why i was walking him, well i just felt we both needed to get out of the house, he already has his first shots so i really didnt see anything wrong with taking him out ! but from now on it will just be the front yard and doggie parks, P.S. one of the main reasons im letting him out now is because i want him to get interaction with kids now, as a puppy that way he learns for when he gets older

Re: some people are just plain dumb
I hate that!!!! Omg i get that all the time with my black lab no less! People think " OMG a big scary black dog! Its going to eat our children! Lets call the police and tell some lies so that lady loses her dog and the dog is put down" People are really really stupid. They listen to all these stories about freak accidents and think it is an everyday occurance. I can't believe she would do that infront of her child. Her kid is going to be scared of them now... ugh I HATE idiots like this... Having snakes we get it all the time... people just need to trust that if we allow our animals to be pet that they are safe. You did nothing wrong. you should have told her you didnt want her grubby old hands on your precious little doggy anyway! I LOVE Pits! They are great dogs. Like any human it depends on how they are taught. People can fix alot of things. We can fix cars, we can fix 5 star meals and we can even fix alot of common illnesses, But unfortunatly my BP.net family you can't fix stupid.

Re: some people are just plain dumb
aww.. such a cute pup. What a shame that the woman was an idiot and is teaching her daughter to also become an idiot. And you handled the situation admirably. Personally I would have said something to her like, "be careful or next time he might lick you senseless!" but thats just me :D
-
Re: some people are just plain dumb
lol yah he is already starting to slober because of his jowls( is that how you spell that?) so i can see how the whole licking thing could be "deadly" lol

Re: some people are just plain dumb
In my state you cannot get homeowners insurance if you own a pitbull.
-
Re: some people are just plain dumb
where do you live? in know in cali that you have to have insurance and something like a 12ft high fence , as well as the dog has to be spayed/neautered, Ahh the wonderful things that BSL has gave society,

:OOH MY GAWDD, LOOK AT THAT FACE!!
He's adorable! I would hug and kiss that thing to bits and pieces.
Don't listen to that woman. She's twisted.
Don't let it get to you and look at the bright side: at least your province/state has put a BAN on them.
Can you believe that?! A BAN on a breed of dog...
Heck, you wanna feel better?
People are so stupid, some of them and their children get scared when they see MY dog!!
(pitcure in my gallery, too lazy to post)

If the puppy has gotten its Parvo/Distemper shots then you should be fine taking him out on walks(The real threat is ignorant people like the "lady" you ran into!)
I actually believe its very smart to get your dog out and expose them to as much a variety of environmental stimulation from a very young age. This is what I did with my Male APBT Homer and he is hands down the best dog I've ever had!
These are rough times for Pitbull owners with all the BSL (BS is more like it) going around...
As previously Stated I woul say ignorance is the leading cause of the Pitbull prejudice(or all Prejudice for that matter)
Its funny how two little words "pit" and "bull" when put together can strike fear into ones heart! I've had tons of people "oh what a pretty dog," while petting it "what kind of dog is it?" I'll reply "Pitbull" and suddenly the rules change They either cringe or pull theyre hand back.WTF? A second ago it was a pretty puppy now its a vicious killer?Hmmmm...
Thats why these Days I will either reply ith the proper(non-slang) name The American Pitbull terrier or If I really think they are "one of those people" its a Staffordshire:rolleyes:
Its funny though how little things can change a persons opinion of a dog.I have a friend that is a fellow APBT owner and told me about how they get the standard "pitbull cringe" when someone asks the breed, but then they put this dog sweater on and take her out shes soooo cute even when you drop the Pitbull bomb on them.So really you can get past ones ignorance with a little patience(and the right tools!):gj:

Re: some people are just plain dumb
Personally I would have told her to go F*** herself...lol...
I had a pit growing up and he was always playful...turned out to be one of the best dogs ever. We gave him away cuz my brother went into the navy (it was his dog). Anyway, the girl that took him raised him up and when her two kids came along, no one could go near the kids. Every where the kids went, he went. If you got with in 20 feet of the kids, he was up on all four legs. He never attacked anyone, he just made it clear that those were his kids and no one was going to hurt them.
Damn I miss that dog....lol...

Re: some people are just plain dumb
I rescued a pit bull about two years ago. My dad did not want me to have it at all, so I was forced to keep him at my girlfriends house, out of town. Basically he was stuck in a kennel, a nice one, but I hated it. I visited him all the time obviously and he got to be out whenever anyone was outside. Anyways, I loved him and I thought he was the sweetes dog ever. He unfortunately got a little agressive with a family friends rat terrier and killed it. I agree that they should never have been around eachother, and I dont fault Iso (my pit bull). We unfortunately had to put him down, bescause the family friends pushed so hard. It was so sad...why loose two dogs when you dont need to. Im not saying pit bulls are bad dogs at all. Iso was poorly treated growing up and was still an amazing dog, but things happen.

Re: some people are just plain dumb
belive me i have, maybe its just that i came from a very open family, maybe its my love for all animals deadly or not. but i just cant bring myself to hate a species or breed no matter what, would i be mad if a pitbull attacked me or my wife sure, but i would want that dog punished not the breed! i mean when i was a kid i was attacked by a rot and i have nothing against the breed i have meet many on many of rots that are as sweet as a rabbit. hell i was attacked by a musk rat, should we put a ban on them as well?

Re: some people are just plain dumb
I think the personality of pit bulls determines STRONGLY on their owner and how they were raised. An elderly lady where I live had a pet pit bull that was VERY nice, and had never bit anybody. It got in a fight with a stray and the lady tried to stop them(which she shouldn't have). It then mauled her, causing her arm to be amputated. But anyways, pits are cool IMO.

Re: some people are just plain dumb
I'm not a pitbull fan and try to stay away from them much as possible. WHY? Because were I live they are bought and trained to fight. They get loose and cause problems around my neighborhood with other dogs, and people. Around here you don't walk your dogs, nor do you walk on foot with out carring mace and a thick stick or baseball bat. I'm sure there are nice ones out there but I've been nearly attacked twice by a "super sweet would never hurt a fly" pit as the familys said they both were and for no reason at all and I've been chased by them around here alone and with my dog countless times. First time it was at a 4th of July cook out and I was sitting on my b/f's legs and his friends pit came full charging me snarling and everything. His owner thankfully was right next to me and grabbed him because he got me. The second time was over my cousions house. Her pit has seen me a million times and no no reason at all again while I was sitting watching TV, that dog laying near the sofa just got up walked over to me and start snarling at me, and when I called for my cousion to come get her damn dog thats when he lunged at me and his teeth glazed my arm before I was able to kick him away then she got him.
So yeah, people who don't like pits aren't "plain dumb". MANY anti pitbull people have reasons why they don't like pits, nor do they trust them.
-
Re: some people are just plain dumb
I have a pit bull. She belonged to my brother as a baby and he taught her some very unfortunate things. I do not speak or see my brother unfortunately, for many many reasons. Anyway, my dog, while being EXTREMELY sweet, cannot be around young children. We KNOW this, so we ensure there is no way she can come in contact with them. Small children make her nervous. If they grab her ears or poke her she growls, which of course is unacceptable.
She is also a very protective and jealous dog. If I hug my mother, she will bark loudly and push herself in between us. You cannot play fight around her because if she thinks you are hurting someone, she WILL stop you.
She is difficult to teach. Each owner is responsible for knowing the behavior of their dog. It is because of my brother that she acts the way she does, and it is a constant effort to teach her.
But we know what to expect from her, and those who visit my mothers home are givin the "ground rules" about the dog before coming in.
I live in Ontario, my neighbor has a pitbull. Pitbulls are banned here. They MUST be fixed and registered, and breeding is illegal. I can see the reasoning for this but it IS very sad. For the adorable, well behaved pitbulls that live, they should NOT be punished. Sadly in certain areas, there are less trained pitbulls than "wild" ones.
Overall I sit on the fence, even as a pitbull owner. My dog is ADORABLE and sweet, but after being mistreated by my brother, she is just not the same.
Its a tough issue.
*By the way, my pittbull is the current POTM;), if you wanna take a look at that sappy little face*

i am very very sorry that it has come to that in your neighbor hood, truly i am, and i wasn't calling you dumb i was calling the lady that is afraid of a 10 week old puppy dumb! now as for you not liking pits well to each his own! but "punish the deed not the breed" comes into effect really really well here, i understand why you wouldn't like the pits in your area but just because you ran into a few bad ones do you think the entire breed should killed? and from one pet owner to another, forgiveness should be a daily thing, don't assume that just because you ran into a few "bad apples" that the entire breed is like that.

Re: some people are just plain dumb
I have a doberman, who have reps similar to pits, although they're not in the media as much as they were a couple decades ago. I've never had a person react negatively toward her while we're out walking...everyone so far loves her. But a couple times at a pet store or grocery store, while checking out with a bunch of dog stuff (she's spoiled!)...I've been asked what kind of dog I have, and when I say, "Doberman" I've actually been asked, "Why on earth would you want one of those??!"
I swear, I wanted to ask right back, "Why on earth would you cut your hair like that???" I didn't. I just shook my head and took my groceries and walked out.
I realize there are legitimate concerns about dog safety...but it does annoy me greatly when people make sweeping assumptions about any individual dog based solely on its breed. Just like people so often make sweeping assumptions about a snake's lethality, simply because it's a snake.

Re: some people are just plain dumb
I think if there's a problem in an area with dogs attacking people or other animals, then laws need to be passed and enforced that dog owners must TRAIN their dogs. Large dogs CAN be dangerous, and they do injure and kill people every year (plenty of small dogs cause injuries as well)--the breed is irrelevent to that. I highly disagree with BSL, but there are far too many people out there who are either too lazy or too ignorant to properly train their dogs so they will BE safe around people and other pets.
If they have to pass a law, it should be to require training, not to prevent people from owning dogs of specific kinds.

again another good point! another point would be to make a record of all owners who have neglected their pets and make the punishment more severe to those who violate it! i mean yah if you can neglect a dog (or any pet for that matter) then you can face jail time but what is a few months? i mean in my neighborhood jail you get cable tv and 3 meals a day( that actually sounds pretty good)! so lets make it to where you violate the animal rights law then you cant own one again!!!!

She threatened your dogs life???? Thats horrible, i dont think i could let that slide, without at least some sarcastic come back (to make me feel better). Also you should never have to lie about your dogs breed, be proud of his breed. I have a doberman, and i love when people ask what breed he is. As far as my dog goes, hes huge and looks like a typical doberman, minus the cropped ears, but i dont get too many negative comments about him, i guess maybe because when you finally meet a dobie up close you realize how goofy and lovable they really are.

Re: some people are just plain dumb
i agree completely, some people are morons! i remember when my GSD was a pup, a woman in a pet store seen him and grabbed her daughter and started basically screaming in fear. she made everyone look at us, like my puppy was attacking her. she SCARED my puppy, what a great day of socializing that turned out to be.

Re: some people are just plain dumb
It seems to be the same all over. This is a topic I do know a bit about. I have never met a mean pit, or a mean rott, or any of the ones "they" say are mean. on the other hand I have been bit by a poodle, and a dalmation tried to bite me once(belonged to a friend of the family) and I know a minpin/rat terrier mix that is in my opinion evil. I had a guy that lived next door to me once that trained his labs to be attack dogs. I acctually had to "get rid of" one of the best dogs I have ever known, because a nosey, mean lady that at the time lived down the street from me complained to the athoritys that I had a visious rott...(she was a rott/ st.bernard mix) That girl loved everyone. never bit, or barked, would cry if someone new came by, a big baby.
(all this in the middle of nowhere SD)
Yah so I know.
I also get that alot with my snake and rodents (aparently they are all going to kill me...)
I miss that dog, and she looked nothing like a rott, but my mother-in-law told the lady what breed she was....how it all started.
The best you can do is try and educate anyone who will listen.

Re: some people are just plain dumb
I would love to have a Pit! I worked in a few vet clinincs a while back, and some of the nicest dogs I worked with were Pit Bulls. But they're not the only ones with a bad rep. American Eskimos are know as 'face biters'. Apparently there are a few that are less than nice, but mine is not one of them. As a matter of fact, she's the second one I've had. They are somewhat nervous, shy dogs, but neither of mine have been biters. Yet everytime I take her to be groomed, to the vet, or to stay at day care, I get the silence on the other side of phone receiver as soon as I mention the breed. Then once I pick her up from the facility, they just adore her. I think of her as a little Eskie ambassador...lol.
Btw, your pup is absolutely gorgeous!
