    49 foot python?
I stumbled on this 4 year old article

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3845750

    49 feet.. 983 lbs..

Really?? I mean, it's msnbc so I don't think they would purposefully lie about the size, but its size was reported to them by "local government officials" I assume.

Has this been shown to be a hoax? It's an old article so I wouldn't be surprised.

Sadly it wasnt even half that size. Some one actually managed to buy it from them and when they measured it, it was barely 20 feet. And the only reason why the villagers sold it, was so they could go out and find a bigger one.

That's not even close to 49 feet. How could anybody see a picture and not be able to tell the scale?

i like how it says they've been known to attack and consume humans... i wasn't aware one had every consumed a person.

regardless, that's a big snake to find in the wild!

I posted this video long ago. Still, it's a nice sized snake. Not close to what they are saying it is.

I think there has been total of one person, a young kid, consumed by a retic. In the wild you will find some very pissy ones.

I think somewhere in this forum there is a story of an African Rock Python consuming a small boy.

I think that same snake was on a tv show or something on animal planet, "that snake" was worshiped by the village as a god. Someone looking for the largest snake in the world and they heard of the village, and after a year of negotiations they ended up selling them that snake.

The story explained how during that year of negotiations they probably went out into the jungle and found the largest snake they could find, while still having a bigger snake being worshiped in the village. Just speculation though, I really doubt that there is a 49 ft. snake in their village, but probably larger than the one they sold to the reporters. I might be wrong though, it was a while ago when I saw it

Actually a retic DID swallow an adult man--a skinny little guy--it was quite a few years back now.
Another has been caught in the act of doing so, before it actually got past the guy's shoulders--and that man wasn't really all that small. The retic was sure giving it a try.

Human shoulders are a challenge to snakes, and it was originally thought that they would prevent giant snakes from swallowing people...but they now know that a retic's constriction is so powerful that the shoulder bones may be quite thoroughly broken by the snake, which would indeed allow it to swallow someone. There's no reason why not--they swallow animals much larger than us. With the shoulders broken...it's down the hatch.

Retics are still on record as the only snakes capable of swallowing an adult human, though logically the green anaconda probably can manage it too, for the same reasons.
