DIY ASF tubs?
So I am tired of 10 gallon tanks (broke one the other night and scared the hell out of a crapload of weans). Has anyone made any ASF enclosures similar to the rat ones with the hardware cloth zip tied into a cut out in the lid? I've done this for rats but not ASFs. I am going to go to HD to get some ideas. I want to do something with the footprint of a 10 gallon tank but with a hardware cloth lid so I can do a food hopper and automatic watering. I want to keep these enclosures on a plastic shelving unit. I just can't spare the space in the regular racks anymore. Need all the regular rat production I can get. Any ideas would be great!

Re: DIY ASF tubs?
Id do it the same way, but smaller hw cloth and make sure that they have to access to the plastic edges.
The only problem I see is the amount that they chew. I know that you can use things to help prevent that, but i would not risk it in anything other that mortar mixing tubs.

Re: DIY ASF tubs?
Jamie, I found this post by Connie showing her setup for her asf's. I am going to use this idea as well. Hope this works for you.

Re: DIY ASF tubs?
Rather than making holes the ASFs can get their teeth into eventually for the water bottle, I use a hardware cloth hopper just like the one for the food, placed right next to the food, for the water bottle to slide into. Works great and they can't chew anything up.
I'm seriously considering using the metal feed troughs you can get at the feed stores for the ASFs and just building screen tops for them. I'm tired of glass tanks, too.

Re: DIY ASF tubs?
I cut holes into the tops of my tubs and cover them with hardware cloth. My hoppers are then built into the hardware cloth. I've had this set up since march. I've had one chew out, but it wasn't around the top of the cage near the cloth.

Re: DIY ASF tubs?
Oh, well I suppose I should change those pictures out to my new ones.
After having that thread here and at ASF forums, people heartily recommended I move the hoppers into the middle of the tub to prevent any lid chewing and I did.
All the water bottle holes are untouched. ;)
Oh, and I hung the wheels from the lids too and that has been working out really well. :D
I actually like the taller tubs for ASF's because the lids keep the wheels farther off the ground, which leaves more floor space for the ASF's. But I have mostly 54 qts for holding ASF's, and I use the taller 66 qts for the breeders.
I'll have to take more pictures and swap them out tonight.

Has anyone made progress with a watering system?

I believe Deborah uses a mouse rack with watering system for hers. Maybe she'll drop in. :D

Maybe Jamie could do some work on your website in exchange for some help with an ASF rack?

I know, but the whole funny-because-it's-true bit only works if the truth is a *small* thing like "everyone knows Jennifer likes to shop, ha ha ha".
Hurtful... :(

I only use the larger mesh for the hoppers. I use a smaller mesh for the actual top of the tub. I have also been doing this for mice.
I bought some wood chews and haven't seen a single problem. I also hear its good to use wheels if you have chewy ASFs to keep them busy. I use a wheel and an igloo hide.
The only difference, is I don't use metal zip ties. I went to ACE to look for C-clips or metal zip ties and they thought I was an alien.. guess they don't exist in IL?
So I use a soldering iron and glue holes around the edge, then I take the mesh and from underneath, weave thin metal wire through the holes and the mesh. This works very well if you have enough holes and you overlap the mesh over the holes. I haven't had a single problem.
Took me a while to make it with the hopper though. Ohh man.

I know a lot of people do the weaving thing for regular rat tubs, I believe FrankyKeno has that method in her large rat tubs. :)
I would weave, but my hair is long and curly enough for me. :8:
I kid, I did it for one of my tubs, but it hurts my little hands to be pulling on the wire so I stuck with the plastic zipties.
