What do you do if the snake wont let go?
So I was watching snakebytes.tv and in one of the myths segements, Chewie gets bit (on purpose?) and the snake wont let go. It obviously was uncomfortable and of course they didnt want to hurt the snake.

    So my question is....
If I (or someone else) should get bit by my new BP and the snake locks on and wont let go, what do I do?

What if it locks on to your hand and wraps your arm and begins to constrict?

Obviously I wouldnt want to hurt the snake

the best thing to do is run the snakes head under running water until it lets go . thats the safest way to do it from what i have found in my expierence

Give it some alcohol. :D Just a few drips.

Well it definitely depends on the snake

When I had it happen with a BP, I simply used my spray bottle to spray water down his nostrils.

For a bigger snake I would probably use Listerine instead.

If it constricts, unwrap it by the tail, that is the weakest point. I have only been struck by balls, none haved ever locked on. I did get bit by a 14ft burm that would not let go. I put a very small amount of hand sanitizer in my other hand and raked it across her face, she instantly let go.

Put its head under warm (not too hot!) running water. For some reason I haven't had success with cold water, but the warm water has never failed to work for me.

Grab it behind the jaws (the back of it's head where the groove is) and slowly coax his teeth out of your skin. Once your BP reaches 4 feet, never handle him alone just for safety precautions. There's a video on Youtube with Expertvillage that tells you what to do in the situation. But the water suggestions other people mentioned are good too. Grabbing a snake by the back of the head is like grabbing a cat by the scruff of it's neck or tapping a dog on the nose. No harm if it's done gently

I can't really see how a four foot Ball Python would be dangerous.

The fact that at that length it has the power to constrict you if you're stupid enough to let it get near your neck?
This is just something somebody told me.

Ok I will go along with that, how do you grab his jaw with one hand and the top of his head with the other when the BP is tightly coiled around your knuckle???

    I only have 2 hands!

:weirdface Really so I have been putting my safety at risk all those years.

Now seriously Ball Pythons are not the type of snakes that require more than one person to be handled safely.

When looking for answers carefully examine the source of your info, ExpertVillage is definitely not known to be a reliable source of info at least when it comes to ball python (not sure about the rest I am too scared to look)

It can't constrict your neck if its not wrapped around it in the first place.

ExpertVillage: Ball Pythons need temps of high 90s during the day and mid 70s at night
ExpertVillage: Ball Pythons like to bask it hot light during the day

I frequently have adult Balls around my shoulders/neck. They're not very strong and even if they did "try" to constrict someone, the most you would have to do is uncoil them. The fact is, though, that they would probably never constrict someone's neck other than to hold on and feel more secure. Certainly not a feeding constriction.

I think the only way a Ball Python would be considered dangerous is if you trip over one and fell down a flight of stairs. ;)

As far as what to do if it won't let go? It'll eventually let go. It's just a Ball Python and once it realizes it's not in any danger or can't eat you, it will relax its grip and let go on its own. You could try one of the tricks like running water over their head, but it's not necessary.

AHahahahaha!!! I'm sorry thats just too funny! I'm sorry but I don't believe I understand the danger! How old are you? are you younger than 16? If you are that is the reason they told you that. Young kids should be supervised when working with a snake if they arn't used to it. But I myself have seen many a ball python around necks and wrists of kids so no one listens to me... For kids, mentally impared, and the elderly there should always be someone on hand ready for a bite or to unwrap a snake from ones neck. Ball pythons are the least of my worries for bites and such. They are gental snakes if handled correctly even after they reach 4 feet. I love these little buggers with all my heart and I can see where there is danger for the young and old but not for healthy adults.

disregard anything that lady said, she sounds like she got her info from a 1932 caresheet. She also says that albinos are the most expensive snake you can buy, and pieds being six times as much as a normal.

I've never heard of a BP latching on

I do get bitten by the kingsnake at my petsmart quite often though... I usually end up running water over its head until it releases me.

If I tried to remove it by grabbing from behind the head I would probably injure tthe poor thing.

Haha, sorry, but I laughed out loud when I read that. I disagree completely. If a ball python has ever killed someone, I'll eat my own face off. I think a baby could fend off a BP.

The first time I ever got bit by one of my ball pythons, he was wrapped around my neck and latched on for about ten minutes. I just stayed very calm and occupied myself quietly. He eventually let go on his own and got to keep all his teeth and avoid being traumatized. I don't think it's really anything to worry about.

Honestly, some of you people have taken what I said earlier way too far. I stated what I heard from someone else and never claimed for it to be the right answer. Isn't the whole point of this website to help other people and discuss ways of keeping BPs? I got the point by the time the second person mentioned I had false information. Using that as an excuse to take a stab at me is pathetic.
