Killer bee
Hey everyone
IM new to this forum since i havent posted anything yet but have been looking for a long time now.
I have a female normal and a very nice male pastel (possible super)
Anyways my question is how does it work when you get a killer bee
I understand basic genetics but a pastel + spider makes a bumblebee because one pastel allele combines with one spider allele right
and what makes a super pastel is two pastel alleles right
so how does combining a super pastel and a spider make something different than combing a pastel to a spider
you cant have two alleles from one parent so how do you get killer bees from super pastel to spider
May be stupid question but it beats me
Thank you
Philippe :)

There is no mistake between a pastel and a super. If you bought a pastel, it is almost a guaranteed pastel. I doubt a breeder could make that mistake and loose money over it.. :]
I could be wrong on this, but I'm using what I know about genetics. Because the Super Pastel is Homozygous, it can only transfer one pastel gene to each of the offspring..
So let me see.. From the SP x Spider I think it would have all bumble bee offspring.. However, Isn't the spider gene Heterozygous Dominant? So then it would also have the allele for Normal. If this is true it would be 50% for Pastels and 50% for Bees. At least I think..
Because the spider is dominant.. But I'm pretty sure you won't get anything other than bees, spiders, pastels, and normals.
Edit: Also, the Pastel can only transfer one gene as well, either the Pastel allele or the Normal allele, which in this case would give chances for Normals as the normal allele is dominant.

yaa i know a breeder wouldnt do that its just it didnt look at all like any of the other pastels he was selling and i met the breeder a few weeks ago and when he looked at the snake he was shocked and said it might be a super pastel i will post a pic
im pretty sure super pastel + spider you will get some killer bees
thats what i dont understand lol
heres the pic look how white the head is i dont know its a close call

Re: Killer bee
No, you can't get a killer bee by breeding a super pastel to a spider. You will however get all pastels and bumblebees. To get a killer bee you have to breed a bumble bee to another snake with the pastel gene.

To get a killer bee you have to have a Pastel X Bumble Bee cross. I know that.
That does indeed look like a super. Hm.

Haha, good job. Maybe it's just because I haven't taken any genetics classes beyond high-school biology, but it seems to confuse more people when it comes to ball python morphs than anything else. Is it just because the genetics behind them are so simple and the classes have to do with a more advanced aspect of it all?

I guess only time will tell when i breed him

Sorry to hijack.. but the reason I try really hard at genetics is because I REALLY like them. Something about them.. I don't know. I love the way it works. We did a huge section about blood types and genetics in Anatomy and have a very large Gen/Bio course. I soak up as much as I can.. Maybe I would be better at doing genetics then veterinary meds.. Hm.. never thought about that before.
Anyhow, if that's a super.. you can prove it out by breeding it to a spider and seeing what comes out of it. If you do get bees and pastels, you can breed those back to get killers.
I don't know what a Bee X Super could produce though. :]

Re: Killer bee
Well for now its gonna be my first breeding so im going simple pastel to normal so if i get 100% pastels then i could be pretty sure i got a super

Definitely wasn't meant to knock on you, I was just making an observation that it seems most of the people that take a real genetics class have a hard time getting the hang of bp genetics. Or it could just be that those are just the ones that really stood out in my mind.
Anyway, back to the topic -- Bumble bee to a super pastel would give you killer bees, bumble bees, super pastels, and pastels. ;)

Never thought you were knocking on me..
Interesting. After reading about genetics for bps, I almost understand it more than the classes.. I think the whole co-dom pink flower thing killed me. x.x
Awesome combo there. That's like a jackpot of good fortune.
