Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
No wonder the person wouldn't answer the phone, probably couldn't find it! That's incredibly gross, I don't understand how some people can live like that...

Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
i bet it was a non smoking apartment too

Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
Anyone who lives like that is completely psychotic imho. The lady who owns that belongs in a psych ward. I can't even let my ashtray have more than a few cigarette butts in it. You have to have something seriously wrong with you to live in filth like that.

Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
It's actually a mental disorder, we learned about it in Psych.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compulsive_hoarding
I have seen videos of hoarders talking about their problem. It's very sad. They don't like living the way they do but they have an unescapable urge to save things. I hope whoever owned that house got some help.

Probably used it to re-heat the pizza.

Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
I dont know if that qualifies as hording?
That stuff isnt just things that she's bought or brought home from the curb, its just piles and piles of junk food bags, pizza boxes and cigarettes and soda cups.
Whatever it is, that sure does look like something mental is going on.

From http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hoarding/DS00966:
Quote:
Hoarding is the excessive collection of items that seem to have limited or no value, such as newspapers or trash, along with the inability to discard them. Hoarding creates such cramped living conditions that entire rooms may be filled to capacity, and homes may be left with only narrow pathways winding through stacks of clutter. Some people also collect animals, keeping hundreds of dogs, cats or other animals in their homes, as filth and waste pile up and the animals become sick.

I agree. That isn't hoarding. People who have a hording disorder don't keep every cigarette butt and ash. That is sick, it's just filth. I think that a hoarder would stack the cups and junk. Hoarders have piles of stacked newspapers and trash. I think that people like this have no regard for themselves, or anything at all for that matter. She's just a slob.

Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
This reminds me of a guy I saw driving down the street the other day. I pulled up next to him and glanced over and noticed that his entire back seat was filled with fast food bags, papers, and other trash. It was literally piled up to the top of the front seats, and his front passenger seat was filled up to the window line. It was like a rolling dumpster, with just enough space for the guy to get in and drive.
I agree that this is a mental condition. I've always been concerned that my mom has this, but not to such a severe degree. She has old news papers from as far back as 20 years ago as well as old junk mail stacked probably 3 feet high on her kitchen table and every time we've tried to go through it and clean, she says that she's not ready to throw some of that stuff away. I think if it ever got to this point where she wasn't throwing away fast food bags and cups, I'd have to intervene and insist that she get help. As it is now, it's just clutter and not posing any kind of physical health concerns.

Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
At least they use their keyboard a lot. :8: Now I'm going to wonder about the people I play WoW with...
-
Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
I guess they never learned how to use a garbage can.
I flip out when I get anything on my computer, I can't imagine having ash all over it.

There is a guy like that where I live in Boston. He has a pickup truck that is completley full of random crap. The bed has tree branches sticking out of all the trash, the passenger seat has stuff that almost goes to the ceiling, and the dashboard is covered. I seriously wonder how he fits in their.

Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
HAHAHA i was looking at the pictures again. There seems to be cleaning supplies scattered all over the apartment. Just never got around to using them.:gj:
-
Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
I am not one to brag about my housekeeping .. but I think I may have more freedom to do so given the pictures I just saw!
-
Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
I have seen several times during my work life people that had stuff stacked 7 ft high with only a narrow path that went from room to room like a maze. It is certainly a mental disorder where these people can throw nothing away. They will have 20 years worth of daily newspapers all stacked up, a real fire trap.
-
Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
I think I saw her hiding in one of the piles of trash...
I feel bad for the poor cat that had to live there.

Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
I'd hate to lose my wallet in that house... Wow, seriously I bet there is a whole new ecosystem brewing in that room.

Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
I feel dirty just living in the same area! They do have good tastes in food chains.
-
Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
I've seen houses like that on TV on one of those Animal Planet shows about the exterminators going in for roaches but the houses are always dark and with the windows covered with dark curtins. That house was brightly lit with white accents, not counting the cigarette butts.:D
How disturbing was the blue bucket on the toilet? Looks like the toilet stopped working long ago and the bucket was the temporary fix . . .gross!!!!

Please don't say things like that. It's not true.
Just because your a very clean person, doesn't mean everyone else is.
My father is extremely bad about keeping his house clean. Not to that extent, but it's bad. He's not psychotic, just extremely busy and lazy. Some people 'wrongfully' find comfort in filth.
If anyone has ever watched animal cops/precinct shows, you will know that this is not nearly as bad as it could be. Imagine twice the amount of filth with cat and dog waste pasted on top. I've seen a house similar to this unfortunately. The worst part is the SMELL.
-
Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
.....That was just disturbing and disgusting!
Blackcrystal...I have to disagree. THAT extent of filth is not just lazyness or lack of time, it's a lack of caring for health! Of herself or others!
My father is a total slob, who would leave clothes all over the floor and dishes piled up on the table and counter. He was lazy and just didn't like picking things up or moving them, but he NEVER left trash laying around. And that bathroom!! No, that isn't laziness, that is a problem. Mental or not, that is a big problem.
And that poor cat...OMG. I am SO glad they finally went in there and found out, before her neighbors got sick or something.

Don't worry, I'm not saying it's always the same. Theres a different situation for each dirty house.
There could be a lot of story that we don't know. This person could have severe depression problems, and probably a mental disorder. That doesn't make them crazy, just unstable.. (I consider crazy more maniac psycho murderer type).
I know it! I was thinking about that poor cat too. Luckily it was probably able to hide in a softer area (as some of it seems to be clothes and drapes) for most of the time.
The difference with this house, is the main living area is filled with non-wet garbage (despite things in cups/containers/cat waste). Most of it seems to be stuff that you could step on and not step in a sludge of some sort.. except for the bathroom.
Blech.

Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
hey! that looks like a college dorm room. I've seen them that bad though, seriously, mostly on guys floors (and yes I know not every guy is like that). I refused to safety check those rooms unless hazmat went in there first lol.
The fact an entire house is like that is disgusting. The bathroom made me want to gag lol That is by far the worst room!
-
Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
It may have something to do with compulsive hoarding I wouldn't rule it out completly. I know a woman who has stacks and stacks and stacks of newspapers. Looks almost like that place except the filth.
-
Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
Wow... did anybody else notice that most of the cigarettes are hardly even smoked??
-
Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
:O
Except the cigarette butts....
it looks like my car.
*grabs a trash bag and runs out the door*

Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
OMG!!! I know the person who was handling this case. He didn't have to walk into the place but he has first communication to the one that did.

I think you have me confused for someone else. I'm not very clean or organized at all. And I'll stick to my story that this lady, and anyone who lives in such filth, either has a serious psychological disorder or is possibly a hardcore drug addict. Those pictures go far beyond hoarding stacks of newspapers or being messy. I know people who sound like your dad. Their house is disgusting, but I don't think it's caused by a mental disorder. They are just busy and lazy.
And like it or not, people who wrongfully find comfort in filth have a mental disorder. Being close with someone who fits the description of anything that carries a negative denotation, or even a negative connotation, sometimes makes us less than objective in our views and defenses. I'm not saying this includes you or your dad, but we see it a lot. We all know people with problems, but the bonding and sympathising of the person doesn't mean that the problems they have are no longer problems. Sorry for the off topic rant, but I've been seeing this more and more and it's always been something that bothers me. The sympathetic rationalizations bother me way more than most of the issues that are being defended.

I think if you look closely, most of the cigarettes have been smoked. It's just an illusion from all of them laying just about in the same direction that makes them seem at first glance to be unsmoked or not finished. Plus, it's not like they are newports with the cork colored filter that helps with the illusion.
I know I thought that at first too, I was like "What a waste of a perfectly good smoke!"
When I first saw the pictures I thought it was fake. Especially the ones around the computer with the piles of ash and the cigarettes almost neatly placed, but then I went to the website and saw all of them, and wow, that seems hard to fake.

Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
What got me was the picture of the trash with someone standing there with slippers/slip on shoes on. Okay I know you have to go in there, and okay you had to take pictures but gawd you would NOT get me into a place like that without boots with the tops taped to my jeans on. Sorry but with all that food and human waste around you are going to have roaches, fleas, lice and maggots in there as well as most likely mice or rats and so on. YEWWWWWWWWWWWW!

HAHAHAHAHA! The funny part of this is the old house we live in tends to have mouse problems. I'll work with my own rats all day long but have one of those nasty wild mice run past me and I'm screaming for Mike to come quick and kill the darn thing! Wild mice give me the creeps!
Course I'll wrangle a big snake without any problems but freak totally out if a june bug gets in the house. I'm just odd. :weirdface

Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
oh my god, the further i scrolled down, the harder i pressed my hand over my nose. just in case the filth smell decided to come through the pictures like a nightmarish scratch and sniff. and can you imagine, just movin the trash on top or picking up an old pizza box and seeing a whole roach colony scatter? ugh. or opening up the fridge and finding leftovers covered with the cure to penicillin (before anyone jokes on me for saying that, its a play on how penicillin is basically a fungus, and through SO much growing, its come full circle and killed itself.) :D ugh. nasty!! and i dont even wanna know what was on the bathroom counter. it looked like dead mice and feminine care products. used. GROSS. well im off to clean now. *shudder*

Re: What in the world happened here?! :O
Oooomg. That was nasty to look at. I feel for the landlord and anyone who had to help clean that up. That is just.. wow.. I am aghast. ::runs and hides::
