    sulcata question?
I have an adult sulcata tortoise and was looking to get a baby one and i was wondering if it was ok to house them in the same enclosure. The one i have now and is a female at about 9in. and about 10lbs.

    I would not!

Not because they will not get along, but just for the sheer size difference. A baby Sulcata, is about as big as a fig, not very big.

Your little guy might get trampled a lot. I doubt it would kill it, but it could, and is probably pretty annoying.

    Hope that helps!

    HA!

    Re: sulcata question?
I actually only had her for a few days now. I adopted her from forgotten friends reptile sanctuary. There was an open 8x4 enclosure at my place so i made it into 2 levels, i always wanted one and i am so happy to get her because they are such and interesting animal. The only problem i am having is buying food for her because there is a place around here that sells bermuda grass, orchard grass, and clover, but they arent going too over the winter so i kinda stocked up on it. What would you reccomend feeding her over the winter?

    I went here:

    http://www.sulcatafood.com/#supp

And got their seed mix. Its got like 30-40 different types of seeds that sprout really really fast. All types of grasses and edible plants.

My big guy (11) loves hibiscus and geraniums, both flowers and leaves. You could also do grape leaves. Dont really have the winter problem here in Cali, so I really dont know if that helps you at all! hahahaha.

With the seed mix, woul you think its on to grow them in potted plants and when they mature just put them in the enclosure to grow freely?

By the wat you guys are so lucky down south and out west. I also have a tegus and 3 bearded dragons........Uv bulbs get very pricey.

    Re: sulcata question?
I would put the seed mix in a pot, that way you can cut off a bunch for him to eat, then it will still grow more, opposed to planting it in there with him, he would prolly eat it all, plus uproot everything and it wouldnt grow back.

Lets see if other people chime in!

I know Richard is pretty smart when it comes to these things!

    Nice looking tort there!

BTW, not no where near adult/grown....LOL

I agree with what has been said already, trampling from the bigger one is the main issue there, well that and getting enough food to the little one.

Congrats though, one of my favorite torts available, my wife loves hers, as do I.....lol

I grow the seed mixes in kitty litter pans burried when I do it. That way you can put it where you want it and move it or re-do as needed.

You can also buy dandelion leaves, radaccio, endive or escarole in the super market for the winter months. I have a leaopard and a Russian but their diets are fairly similar.

Mine eat mostly grass but get those others as treats, they are very fond of dandelion leaves, Whole Foods always has them.

I have four of these guys. One is about 15" and is a PIG. He will lay on the food so none of the others can get to it. I cannot believe how much these things can eat. I love them though!

We buy bails of peanut hay and supply that all the time. We also feed collard greens, romaine lettuce, hibiscus flowers and leaves. We also feed Mazuri Tortuous feed.

    Re: sulcata question?
THats good they can eat hibiscus because my parents
have tons of them in planters and they have to come in for the winter.

I stopped over and they said i can use them as feeders.
