What are these bumps on the back of our new Gray Banded King??
Hello, we got a gray banded kingsnake from a reptile show this weekend and noticed after we got her home that she has 3 or 4 bumps on her back. they arent off to the side, but rather centered down her back. we somehow didnt notice them untill she was home. she is going to the vet tomorrow, but i was wondering if anyone knows what they are in the meantime.

id post up pictures , but im not allowed for some reason. if anyone wants me to email them a picture of it i will.

Email your pics and I'll take a look. It's very hard to say what it could be without a visual.

If you save your picture to photobucket, you should be able to post the picture. Why do you think that you aren't allowed to post a picture in the thread?

Are the bumps squishy/soft to the touch, or hard? Are they the same color as her scales or discolored? Again, hard to say without pics... Hopefully the vet will give you some answers.

They are hard and the same color as her scales. She goes in at 12pm today so i'll let you know what happens. I hope its not cancer. Could snakes be born with cancer?

    That shouldn't make a difference.
Try uploading it in your gallery on here or going to imageshack.us and upload it and copy the direct link to this.
You won't get in trouble, I promise. :]

It looks typical of spinal kinks, which is thought to be associated with vitamin deficiencies in productive females. From what I know, this seems to be a common problem with baby gray-bands, although your animal does not look like a baby. I hope you got it at a really good price. A trustworthy breeder would not sell a snake like that.

its a baby. we were told she just hatched. she is only maybe 4 or 5 inches long and no wider than a pencil. picked her up for $50 at M.A.R.S. reptile show this past weekend. the craziest part about it is neither of us noticed the bumps when inspecting her at the show.

so is this something that will go away with proper care, or are they there for life?

Ok. Looking at the pics, it looks bigger. It's hard to believe that would go unnoticed with a physical inspection, but I know it can happen. Generally, in the case of spinal deformation, it does not go away.....at least that I am aware of. I am not a vet, but I'll stick with my diagnosis as I first called it. As long as you are happy with the snake and it is eating, it's not really a problem. I would however, recommend not breeding it if that was your plan. Before I go bad mouthing the breeder, I will say, we sometimes get in a hurry with things and they do get passed over. If this were my animal and I did notice it the problem, it would have been a free animal.

Again, as long as you are ok with the animal/situation, there shouldn't be a problem. If you are not happy, I would suggest trying to find the breeder for a refund or replacement.

    Good luck.

So the Vet confirmed what Brandon Osborne had said. She said the snake looks fine otherwise and has no problems moving, is very active and all. she said it will be harder to notice over time and that it wont effect the longevity of the snakes life.

    thanks again for your help.
