Putting the corn "to sleep"
So... we've decided to put the corn to sleep via the freezer. Uhmm... this is horrible. How do we do it? Thats a stupid question... I dunno. Weird. I feel sick. Why didn't Petco tell us this was one of the two corns that had refused food since being hatched... really pisses me off. And their policy... 2 weeks!? When a corn can suffer well over 6 months with no food. Absolutely ridiculous!

Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
did you talk to the people at petco before the 15 days was up if so go back and talk to the manager and tell him that you were having trouble getting him to eat and that you had talked to the employees of the store about it.
-
Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
Yes we did, but she didn't seem to care too much. "Our contract was clear." Anyway. Its done. I'm going to go bury it in the back.
R.I.P. Tanas.

Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
You froze the snake because you couldn't get it to eat? Did I miss something?

Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
Thats really sad. Did you try to assist feed or force feed?
-
Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
did you bring this animal to a vet for evaluation?
-
Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
What the heck.... Im sorry for your loss and all but dude... explain what the heck happened and how you tried to save it.
-
Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
to some its easier to replace than to try and work with the animal... dunno if she tried other things to give the corn a good quality of life... just my :2cent:

Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
Yipe. Every time I read one of the threads started by this kid...I get more and more convinced that some people just shouldnt be allowed any pets at all. He's having so much trouble with the few snakes he has, yet he keeps adding more to his collection. Scary.
-
Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
Nooo Snakie!!! you should have sent it over here I would have taken it! How many different thingies did you try or did you just go straight to freezing it? If you did HOW CRUEL!

I'm sorry if the questions I've been asking on this forum haven't been up to your high standards. Most of them were just clarification questions for me, because I like a little extra clarification. My two remaining snakes are doing fantastic, actually. I make sure the husbandry is spot on, they're both feeding on a schedule, and feeding well. My ball is in shed right now. I don't understand the nastiness coming from you. The snake had gone just about 5 months without eating anything! It was so thin it could hardly hold its head up... its color was even fading! We tried EVERY suggestion in the book, with the exception of force feeding. I take damn good care of my animals, and I research thoroughly to ensure the health of the animal. I called the only reptile vet I could find, and talked to him about the corn, and he suggested I either bring it in (which sadly we couldn't afford... we're both going to school soon.) or I put him in the freezer. He told us, what a lot of you have been saying, that some corns just won't eat and are doomed to die. It was inhumane to keep it alive... it was starving itself. Tell me why I deserve your disrespect? What are you trying to accomplish here?

Ok Here's My Disrespect. Did You Ever Try Assist Feeding It I Never Once Saw A Post Where You Asked Any Advice On How To Assist Feed (im At Home All Day With A Leg Fracture So Im On Here Alot)? So If You As Dense As You Seem As You Cant See Why Us As Herp Keepers, Lovers, and Breeders Are So Appalled That You Just Up And Put In The Freezer I Wouldnt Be As Upset Had You At Least Asked For Assistance On Assist Feeding But You Didnt And Then To Come At Someone That Cares About Your Animal Like He Or She Was Wrong In What You Said That Just Sucks. Your On A Herp Site With People That Are Here To Help And You Never Ask For It Then When You Come At Us With Im Gonna Kill My Snake You Except Us To Think You Gave It Your All I Think Thats Bs And Frankly Im Done I Could Careless About Any Of Your Post From Now On .

Sadly...you can't afford to bring you beloved pets to the vet. If you can't afford basic care of your pets (basic being...ya know, them not eating) then you shouldnt have pets. Sorry man. Thats life. I'd love to have fifty more snakes. But at the moment, I cant provide food, shelter, space, or care for another fifty snakes. So I don't buy them. So if you can't afford everything a snake needs to live...INCLUDING PROPER HEALTH CARE...then maybe you should get a hamster.

Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
Before you buy any of the animals on your wishlist, I'd suggest you have a savings account with at least $400 set aside specifically for any future vet visits you WILL need. Would you get a dog or a cat without being able to afford it's shots, heartguard, frontline, etc? If not, than why would you buy a bunch of reptiles that you can't afford vet visits for? To me that makes it seem like you regard reptiles as disposable pets. How long did your corn snake go without eating before you called a vet? You should have been force feeding it after going 2-3 months without a first meal, imo. It sounds like you waited until it had about a week of life left in it, then you called the vet, then you froze it to save some money. If I'm right, that's where my disrespect is coming from.
-
Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
I must say that it is a little disappointing that you didn't make an attempt to assist feed. I just started a thread regarding one of my hatchlings that hasn't taken a meal since the day he was born. He had a little pencil neck...skinny little guy...all he needed was some persuasion with an assist feed to help him out.
:(

Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
After thinking about what i said i dont change what i said i just wish to change how i said it. Plain and simple you were wrong in what you did. I'd think long and hard before you get anymore animals not just snakes i mean if you dont have at least enough to saved up for a basic vet visit then point blank you dont need that animal NUFF SAID

Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
Since you are a Satanist, can't you just trade your soul for some loot for a vet visit or something? I mean, if you're going to pledge your eternal soul to the dark side, shouldn't you at least get some cash or the ability to play guitar like Jimmy Paige or something? I thought that's how it works.
:rofl::rofl::rofl:

If thats all I have to do to play guitar like Jimmy Page....COUNT ME IN! Or just give me Robert Plant's pipes. Then I'd be a happy man.

I'll second that!! What this kid did was horrible and inexcusable! There is no excuse for animal abuse. NONE! He should have his remaining animals taken from him.

Take a look back at all the threads where people complain about there being mob attacks on this site, and you will find that most of them have a common denominator. :) It shouldn't take long. There aren't very many here.
And we are still waiting for you to answer some questions from this thread.

Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
I think you'll find that people on this site will always put the health of their animals first. Our animals get what they need when they need it - and if that means we go without then that's a sacrifice we're happy to make.
when someone comes along that doesn't have their priorities straight we tend to get a bit prickly.
vet care comes before Wow subscriptions and purchasing new animals. seriously.

I agree. We won't be buying any new snakes until we have $500 in the bank for snake insurance.
-
Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
Jordan i think the only question i need you to answer is did you even try to assist feed before killing that corn? and nice to hear you are at least taking 1 of our suggestions to heart but keep in mind a general cost of a vet visit at a real herp vet is 150-200 buck you should have at least that per animal saved before you think of buying anything else
-
Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
Excuse me if i've read your post incorrectly ?
You bought a corn from petco, and after 2 weeks of non feeding, and petco refusing to refund/replace the corn you decided to put it in your freezer ?
$500 insurance is not required, all you needed to do was ask for a bit of advice here.
tease feeding/assist feeding would have probably sorted out the issue, but instead you chose to euthanise.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Did i miss something ?

Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
We had a friend that works at Petco try to force feed it around week 4 of having the corn, yes. It wouldn't take the food. And I take all advice given to me... the bulk of the responses have been slams against me for making the decision to freeze the dyeing snake.
-
Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
My corn did not eat for about 5 weeks when she was a baby. Ya know what I did? I kept trying. Now she is an amazing feeder and a lovely snake. If you did not want to get bashed for this, you never should have posted about it. The folks on this site care a ton for their animals.

It's good to hear you plan to save some money for emergency vet visits before buying another snake. But how do you try, and fail, at force feeding. I assume you meant assist feed or something, because forcing doesn't give the snake the option of refusing. How long after that did you wait to call the vet? Another 18-20 weeks?
Edit: I think the biggest problem is that most people who come on here and start a "My snake isn't eating" thread do so in the first week or two. You waited 5-6 months, then came on here and said "my snake's not eating, so I'm putting it in the freezer". Then you came back before people had a chance to help (if it wasn't already too late from your 5 month procrastination) and say, "It's already done, he's a snakesicle".
-
Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
We called the vet too late, I know. And I did post about my corn not eating when we got it... I didn't wait anywhere near 5-6 months to ask for help! Please check my post history before you make statements like that.

this kind of "im getting bashed" statement is usually what a scammer says because they cant answer simple questions and dont want to admit they did a foolish wrong thing you are the later of what i just said Jordan and i think you know that but ill leave it up to you to "man up"

This just caught my attention. Did you forget you had 'tried' force feeding? Or did you think the second statement would take the heat off a bit? Just curious.

good one princess i didnt even catch it but he did say "he" didnt try it maybe thats what was ment

Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
Well we didn't force feed it... He was right, it was more tease feeding, and our Petco friend did it for us. He highly recommended we not try force feeding such a small snake.
-
Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
I know he is your friend and all dude, and I am not trying to be mean but. He works at petco. where the pets blow. and to be honest, they have a terrible rep. I have seen animals in there that are bleeding and missing eyes. and I am not kidding. I saw a corn snake laying upside down with hemipenes out in its cage dead with a with a rotten fuzzy mouse that was WAY TOO BIG for it, in its mouth half way eaten, it looked like it had been there for like 10 days rotting away... and I am not joking. I saw a garter snake that was so hungry that it was eating its own tail NO JOKE! I am sorry but I would not take any advise from anyone at petco. :( sorry.
-
Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
I know... petco is not to be trusted. I trusted what my friend said because I've know him for many years, and he owns 10 healthy snakes since I've known him.
-
Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
I have force fed many corn snakes over the years and some come around and some don't but at least I tried. Force feeding is a last resort but you have to do what you have to do, hell I fed a hatching undersized hondo milk snake for almost 9 months weekly with a pinkie pump before it finally just gave up. Sometimes you have to put in alot more than you will ever receive.
Force feeding a snake is stressful but I imagine starving is no walk in the park either...

Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
Why is this site attracting all these idiotic people all of a sudden??????
You should just get rid of all your animals now, so that if anything happens to them THAT YOU CANT AFFORD, they will be out of harms way.
I hope that Life comes full circle, and you get whats comin to you.
OH I wanted to add
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS

The thing would'nt eat! it happens all the time I have produce some every year that don't feed & don;t make it. Take it to the vet that's a joke! also most vets don't even know how to treat reptles but will still charge you a $100 for a visit. some animals just don't make it ,I had to freeze around 8 hatchlings corns this year because of a defect, should I have taken them to a vet. LOL
Ive seen That most people don't have a clue on how to take care of reptiles & they treat them like they are a dog or some thing I can see that in some people but they are still lower vertabrates without the emotions that people think they have. Don't mean to be harsh but Ive kept & bred all sorts of reptiles for 25 years. only once did I go to the vet when my female spotted turtle had RI,the vet who was suppose to be one of the top reptile vets in Maryland told me it was a bog turtle what a joke!I just rolled my eyes & got her shots & went home.

Stories like this not only DO NOT help our hobby, but are quite unnecessary

Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
This thread needs to get locked...I don't think anything else can be said that hasn't already been.

Re: Putting the corn "to sleep"
its just some of the stuff that people ask & comment about is just plain stupid,Im in the hobbie because of a love of reptiles & nature. nature is harsh & trying to get answers to real questions is pretty hard because most are very emmotionally attached to their pets which I understand. But stories that have bad parts in it is part of the hobby along with the good, some are helpful some are not. I search this site for usefull information & go through 100's of posts everyday to find some good stuff that I can learn from. Sorry I sounded harsh but thats all I have to say.

Since the animal in question is already gone there is little to be gained here.
