Re: Poisons
Very nice frogs. What type are they? And may I ask for a photo of the tanks they're kept in?

Re: Poisons
The orange and black is leucomelas, the one with the yellow spot is a yellow back, and the other blue one is a tinctorius I believe (also called "patricia")

Re: Poisons

Re: Poisons
if that painters tape is there for fruit fly reasons, just pop off that front plastic piece and install hardware cloth on the inside. if not, nevermind.
-
Re: Poisons
Great looking set up and awesome frogs Pat. What kind of camera are you using?
-
Re: Poisons
Nice frogs man. I'd get rid of those B.S. plants and get some sweet jewel orchids for those guys. :D The live plants are almost as enjoyable as watching the frogs.

Yep, it looks like a D. Tinct Patricia or D. Tinct Powder blue. Sometimes they look a lot different, but my poder blues looked just like Patricias. The Leucs loose some of the black and get spots when they are older. The three you got are some of my favorite non thumbnail species.

Re: Poisons
Very nice Pat! Is there any type of animal you don't like?
Did you get them from the guy on the last row, I think the name was Infrogneato? That's who I got mine from but he only had a pair of the orange ones to I got the black back, powder and citronella.

Re: Poisons
man Pat have you licked that orange and black one yet he looks yummy lol tell Lydia she hooked that tank up when Pomona pops off ill bring down the exoterra tank i have and she can hook up mine and ill get me some dart frogs

Its only gonna be there for a little while, till they get a wee bit bigger for pinheads. Good suggestion though, I may do that for my other tank.

Re: Poisons
I was gonna leave you be since you seemed psyched with the new digs, but I agree with Jake, real plants are the way to go.
Also again not looking to start anything, but are you gonna keep all 3 together for good?
-
Re: Poisons
What great colors! They don't even look real. At the rate that you are acquiring animals you better hope that Ventura doesn't burn down too.

Forget pinheads, unless you want to breed enough for them. These guys have bigger appetites than anything I've seen. You'll be on the streets if you have to buy enough crix to keep them full. Breed your own flies. No smell, no noise, very little space, great nutrition and practically free. Get a good fly cycle going, and these guys will be easier and cheaper than goldfish. :gj:

Jake are you talking house flies? Maggots eewwwww! You don't think even a box (1,000+) of pinheads would be enough?
I'm a little worried that I'm not feeding mine enough. I got the wingless fruit flies from the vendor and a starter kit to make my own. He told me to feed them twice a day while they are babies and then once a day when they are adults. The vendor said to dump some in a go back in 20 min to see if they were still running around and if not give them a little more.
Oh no, what have I gotten myself (Raul) into????

I got 3 of them too and was going to keep them together. Is that a bad thing?

Re: Poisons
Laurie, I meant the flightless fruit flies. My darts would eat about 50 per day each. With 3 frogs you'd be going through 1,000 pinheads a week. For my 5 frogs I had 3 containers with a cycle of flightless flies, and they produced enough food for me. It's very cheap and easy. I was also told that the exoskeletins on crickets are a lot harder for frogs to digest. I would give mine occasional pinheads and phoenix worms, but raising the fruit flies was really the only way I would ever keep darts.

:weirdface Thanks Jake. You scared me there for a second! I was thinking where in the heck would you keep house flies. Now I feel stupid!!!!!
I got the fly kit too but I've not started another culture yet. Where do you keep the flies? Not sure if they need special attention or not. Now that I know you have them either Raul or I will most likely be picking your brain.

I never did anything with my fruit flies, and they reproduced two or three generations before I just fed them all off!

Thanks Pat! I still feel completely ignorant about the frogs and the fly cycle. One container should last me how long? When should I start another culture of flies?
I just looked at the frogs and I think I might have over fed them. Should I be worried? Seems like there are an awful lot of flies in there still and it's been a couple hours. I suppose I won't feed them in the morning.
-
Re: Poisons
Now today I picked up a National Geographic for kids and they have poison frogs in featured in there. I hope I can ignore them. They are really beautiful but I'm pretty sure that they would require an experts care.

They won't eat a ton as babies, but their appetites grow with them. For my 5 frogs I always had 3-4 plastic jars going, and I would start a new batch every 2 weeks. Mine would be cashed after about 5 weeks, but it depends on how much of the mix you use and how fast your cultures are reproducing and eating. If you start a culture with 100 flies it will fill up with flies and the food will be gone a couple of weeks faster than if you start a culture with a dozen flies. Also, the quicker you feed new flies off, the less you have in there to reproduce, so if you are constantly feeding from the same jar it will last longer. It's all stuff you will figure out as you get into it. It's just important to get a good cycle going so you don't run out, because buying food for these beasts can get expensive. :)

For a display its been between these and GTPs for a while. With the darts I'd definitely go all out on customizing the enclosure, that's half the fun.
But, then I have to select a species!! :O:P
