Lesser or Mojave? You Decide
With all the lesser x mojave breedings going on to produce a cleaner BEL then mojave x mojave, how can you tell which ones are mojaves and which ones are lessers? I've seen many mojaves for sale that looked like lessers but never any lessers that look like mojaves for sale.
I've raised up 3 baby mojaves before and just got in two more. These last two look nothing like my mojaves did as hatchling. These two just had their first sheds.
Here are some pics of the new "mojaves" next to my 07 mojave. The new mojaves look like lessers to me. These are some crappy pics I took under a dim florescent light in my basement. I'll take some pics under natural lighting tomorrow. Let me know what you guys think.

Re: Lesser or Mojave? You Decide
NVM. Looking back at a few lesser pics these do not look like Lessers but they do have the colors like them. Anyone here produce mojaves and lessers in the same clutch from lesser x mojave breedings? I'm curious if the lesser colors rub off on the mojaves in the same clutch. I see many mojaves for sale with the same coloring as lesser - the pattern and high blushing that lessers seem to have.

Re: Lesser or Mojave? You Decide
Maybe you need to get better lighting in your pictures, but those really don't look anything like lessers to me.

Re: Lesser or Mojave? You Decide
I agree they are mojos its just their coloring are like lessers. I woke up early today thinking there would be a nice clear day to take pics outside but its been raining all day. :tears:

Re: Lesser or Mojave? You Decide
Mohaves and lessers are close in looks I think:banana:
-
Re: Lesser or Mojave? You Decide
Mojaves and Lessers aren't all that close...Lessers are usually lighter and look kind of hypo'ish...at least the one's I've seen do.
-
Re: Lesser or Mojave? You Decide
Definitely mojos.
And no..i don't think they look the same.... same complex...different morph. Both cool in their own right.
-
Re: Lesser or Mojave? You Decide
I think most of the Lesser on the market tend "not" to have alien eyes(dot/spot on side pattern)...or is it just me?

Re: Lesser or Mojave? You Decide
Maybe your lesser and mojave look the same, but then again, I don't like dark lessers... Lighter animals = whiter lucy??

There are some that look a lot alike out there.
That is where the confusion comes from. Not all look completely different from one another.

I'm very aware there are specimens that look similar... in my opinion a quality lesser should look nothing like a mojave, and vice versa. I like mojos for the dark tones, I like lessers for the yellow and reddish tones and higher blushing they tend to have.

I agree, it seems when it comes to lessers they're almost "pastel like" in terms of the range of quality. I see some lessers on the market that look out of this world with just a light gold color. Then a few post down on kingsnake I'll see lessers that I would think were mojaves if it wasn't for the title. All the more reason why selective breeding is important, has anyone see ralphs video of his severely selectively bred lesser? It's out of this world.

Excuse me, is this a misprint? Cause I could swear that the TOP one is a Lesser and the Bottom one is a Mojo.:weirdface

Re: Lesser or Mojave? You Decide
IMO, a mojave does not look anything like a nice lesser. I just hatched this little lesser out about a week ago.

Hi,
BT,
Those lessers are out-flippin-standing.
Do you have pics of the parents - might give me an idea of what I should be selecting for in the future. :please:

Re: Lesser or Mojave? You Decide
Personally I think
Mojave & Lesser & Butter
Cinnamon & Black Pastel
The Many variations of Pastel
are all the same with slight differences, hell they have to be or it would be genetically impossible for the Co-Doms to make homozygous offspring when mixed with each other.
So yes there are slight differences between colors, but they are the same.
-
Re: Lesser or Mojave? You Decide
There is a middle ground - alleles; different mutations of the same gene.
Take for example phantom and lesser. Those look different enough on their own and have different enough homozygous versions that I don't think anyone would say they are exactly the same thing. Yet together they make a white snake.
Even if there is some overlap in appearance between some of the darkest lessers and some of the lightest mojaves they do in general have distinct looks and different looking homozygous animals. So I think they are distinctly different mutations but there is a relationship in that they are mutations of the same gene. The lesser\\mojave combo white snake (technically not homozygous, not sure if "super" applies either) consistently produces about 50/50 lesser and mojave when bred to normals with no leucistics and no normals produced. This points to the two mutations being at least closely linked and given the white combo I think the same gene. Bumblebee and pewter are examples of combos of unrelated genes that can reproduce themselves with normals but not so for the combos inside a multiple mutant allele group like the lesser white snake complex.
