Using PAM on snake
Is it safe to use PAM directly on my snake? Or should I spray a rag and then wipe down my snake?
-
Re: Using PAM on snake
Soak the snake to physically remove as many mites as possible, then place it into the clean and treated enclosure per the directions.

Re: Using PAM on snake
Do Not use PAM on the snake. Read the instructions. Treat the enclosure only with PAM. Personally I use Reptile Relief on the snake. Spray it down and let it soak a few minutes, then soak the snake in warm clean water to rehydrate. By this time the enclosure is ready for the snake and water bowl.

You are talking prevent a mite correct? i first thought PAM was the cooking spray lol.
DONT spray on snakes, only the enclosure.

Re: Using PAM on snake
I use Rid-Bedding Spray, wont say who I learned it from, but lets just say they have A TON of snakes!!!!!
And you can spray that directly on the snake. Just dont go overboard

Use the directions on the can.

Re: Using PAM on snake
When I had mites I soaked my snakes while I cleaned out the cage and water bowl and then spray PAM in the cage. After the cage is aired out and the PAM is dried I take the snake out and wipe it down with reptile relief. After a few days no more mites. It might be over kill but my collection is still small and I can take the time. Triple threat!!! :P

Re: Using PAM on snake
Reptile Relief kills mites by dehydration. It can also slightly dehydrate your snakes. I suggest spraying with RR first, allowing to sit a while, then rinse and soak to help rehydrate. During this time the PAM is drying. Pretty much the same concept just don't like putting snakes back with the RR still on them.

I understand ;););)
What I did was Lightly spray the snake, avoiding the head, and massage in.
I then sprayed the enclosure and removed water bowls. I also let all the fumes from the spray dissolve

NEVER NEVER NEVER apply any permethrin based product directly on a snake,it's a pestacide that once absorbed thru the snakes skin can cause death or severe problems.that's why on the provent-a-mite instructions it says to spray the enclosure THEN let it dry before putting snake back in it's enclosure.

I don't think he meant to spray prevent-a-mite but that rid-bedding spray stuff on the snake.
I'm so lost.

Re: Using PAM on snake
I use Reptile Relief on snake and PAM on the enclosure.
Follow the directions on the products folks, they are there for a reason!

Re: Using PAM on snake
Permethrin is toxic and should not be used directly on reptiles. It is the active ingredient in Rid and Pam.
You need to use something with Pyrethrin in it, which is the synthetic version of permethrin. It is much safer. My vet gave me some Frontline Spray to wipe on the snake.

Re: Using PAM on snake
I was given a solution that is 20:1 Water to Lice Shampoo that has Pyrethrin in it. It has worked wonders for me and was recommended to me by someone who's been keeping/breeding snakes for 15+ years.

Re: Using PAM on snake
i PAM the enclosure, then while it's airing out i put the snake in a tub of water with a few drops of baby shampoo and make the snake put it's head under a few times.

Re: Using PAM on snake
Do you have to wash/rinse the enclosure after spraying PAM in there or do you just let it air out and put the snakes back in?

Let it air dry without snake or water bowl then put the snake back in. The PAM is not harmful to the snake after it dries but will kill newly hatched mites for up to a month, I think that's the time frame, it's on the can. All the directions for use should be right on the can, follow them.
