Re: They play fetch!?!
It is certainly possible to work with them like that. I've seen videos of people tossing them around and playing with them. However, it takes dedicated breeding efforts like those in europe have done to breed for tamer ASF's.
Also, helps that those two are males. Male rats are sooo loveable. Even my males are sweet hearts and I'm sure would be just as playful had I taken the time to socialize them with me.

Yep they'll fetch the tip of your finger right after they slice it off with one swift little rat ninja move!
That was an amazing video though. :)

Re: They play fetch!?!
hi!
thanks for posting my video here, cause that's why i found your site! it's hard to find german speaking sites about asfs (i´m from austria and living in berlin), so i'm really glad i found you!
susi (the fetching rat) is my most aggressive female, the other one on the video (grey-eared) is a tame male. susi kills anything that moves before even noticing what it was (gess that's why she likes balls so much ), unfortunately she fetched another females lip tonight:O, doesn't look good...

...but this one was lucky, a few weeks ago susi killed another female within a few seconds. she's quite heavy (over 120g although she's not fat) compared to my other femals, which come from a different line (smaller and more likely to flee than to bite).
right now i'm resocializing her to the group again, which btw. only works in a shower cabin full of dog hair (susi freezes for fear then and doesn't fight).

btw i don't keep ball-pythons, just a few corns. my asfs are more pets, i mainly keep (and train! :D) mice...

Re: They play fetch!?!
Welcome to BPNet. We have a number of colubrid keepers and breeders here. Your work with the ASF's (which I keep as feeders) is amazing.
So what's up with the dog hair? Does the scent of what they perceive as a predator distract that female from attacking others? I've noticed in watching our ASF's colonies that there seems to be a definite pecking order in the enclosure with a ranking female at the head of it. If she's out of sorts, everyone hides fast even the poor male.
