Smart/weasely dog

Our American bull dog hurt his paw last night and has been limping. Our Rott/beagle didn't like all the attention it was getting him, so this morning, out of nowhere, he started limping around, and holding up the same paw as our bull dog. He's totally faking to get attention. We checked him out to make sure, but there's nothing wrong. When he's in the other rooms he's fine, but around us he's faking an injury. It's got to be the funniest, most pathetic thing I've seen in a while. He's such a smart little weasel.

That's too funny! Hounds can be quite tricky that way. Years ago one of my relatives had a bassett hound that liked to bug their horses out in the fields. Of course the inevitable happened and he got kicked (just very slightly really). Well off he went for a car ride to the vet.

Apparently he felt he wasn't getting enough car rides so every once in awhile he'd do a pretty darned good but totally fake "omg the horse just nailed me!!!" limp. Off in the car he'd go. He blew it though because he'd get so excited about the whole car trip he'd start bouncing around on that supposedly horse kicked leg and give the whole thing up as a total scam. LOL

He also carried tiny barn kittens around in his mouth. With those huge floppy lips of his they were pretty much hidden other than the occasional leg or tail hanging out (and a muffled meow or two). He never hurt them, the mamma cats never objected and other than the kittens getting totally slobbered on they didn't seem to mind the wet ride around the barn.

That is too funny. I had a cat who fell off the TV once (no idea why a 25 lb cat was on a TV). He limped around for a while. He realized that he got a lot of attention while hurt. So he would randomly start limping to get attention. Animals are smarter than we think!

They sure are. I always thought dogs weren't that smart, but after having my rott/beagle for 2 years I'm convinced they are smarter than a lot of humans I know. I'm still not a big dog fan, but I swear my rott/beagle can comunicate like Lassie. I think he's fascinating, the way he thinks and communicates with us. It's almost as skilled as a mute person. My bull dog is still a dumphy idiot, though.

My dad used to love telling stories about a dog he had growing up. He got hit by a car once and hurt his leg and limped for days...of course getting fawned on and fussed over. One day, the boys (my dad and his brothers) were out playing, and the dog comes charging around the corner of the house at full speed, not realizing the boys were there. As soon as he saw them, he screetched to a halt...picked up the "hurt" paw and limped over to them. :D

I have to laugh because my Terrier mix, Molly, is a huge drama queen. Whenever she wants my attention, or wants me to stay home (like when I'm off to work), she starts breathing heavy, lies on her side, looks up at me with this pitiful look, and makes little groaning noises. I tell you, she got me quite a few times, but after 10 years, I've finally learned to give her the Cookie Test. If I ask 'Does Molly want a cookie?' & she jumps up with perky ears (like she always does), I know she's fine. Of course, she gets the cookie :).

Funniest thing is, my 1 year old Chihuahua has learned that trick now too. Except his groans are much louder. The 6 year old Mini Eskie has never caught on, though.

We had a mutt who didn't fake limp, but she'd fake shiver (''ooh, it's winter, let me in!") to get inside.

My parents deck can be seen from inside the house on 3 sides to various windows/sliding glass doors. The dog would stand at the dining sliding glass door, looking inside with big puppy dogs eyes, shivering. If she wasn't let in and whomever she was looking at left the room, she'd stop shivering, which you could observe from other windows in the house. =)
