meaner than the average bear???
In the future im planning on getting a blood but i hear they a re really mean.(when i say future i mean 1-2 years)
Re: meaner than the average bear???
That's why they call them blood pythons. They're out for your blood!
:giggle:
I'm just teasing. They are like all snakes in that they all have the capacity to bite, but not all of them will. Bloods are a little bit more ... "independent" than some other snakes. They can be nippy as babies, but with time and trust can grow out of it.
I don't personally own one, but from everything that I've heard a blood will let you know when it wants to be handled. I kind of think of them like a cat. They'll let you "play with them" and "cuddle them" (not literally, of course) but only on their terms. But really, all of this will vary from snake to snake. Some are nicer than others. ;)

thats good your planning as it gives you time to do a bit of research maybe go and see some adults and handle them so you get an idea what your letting yourself in for.
I dont buy into the Bloods are mean stigma thats often attached to these marvelous snakes, I have bloods and have been tagged once purely by my own fault and not because I have a bad or ill tempered snake either.
Bloods are pretty inactive when compared to say a Burmese or Boa for example they tend to slouch around most of the time. As babies they are very jumpy and some what nervous but with regular handling will tame down.
All bloods retain a very shifty stare that can make some keepers uneasy as they always seem to have an eye on you lol
Bloods are very good eaters when you get them started and will eat and eat so you need to be careful not to overfeed. I feed mine every two weeks although I gave them a medium rabbit this week so wont feed them for a bout 3 or 4 weeks now.
Its really a pleasure watching a hatchling grow into the substantial meaty powerhouse snake they become and with regular handling and proper husbandry ( they are not as forgiving as some so this is very important) they are on the whole a pretty docile but impressive snake to have in any colletion or as a single pet.
I wont blab on too much as there is tons of reading material from this site alone and if you google them to read up on.
They are not inherently mean imo though and I think most of the bad mean specimens came from wild caught snakes or snakes in poor health.

My friend has a few bloods, his sumtran blood pair is rele chill and doesnt whatch you at all but his female malaysian is always in a bad mood and whatch's and strikes at you every chance she gets.
All in all awesome snakes and thinking of getting a blood pair soon.
Re: meaner than the average bear???
Bloods (and Short Tailed Pythons in general) tend to have a little bit of a temperament when they're not situated. However once they're situated they're sweeties :). Some of my herp friends call me the "Blood Guy" cause out of them I'm the only one brave enough to take on a P'd off blood :).
But Bloods are rewarding animals, in my opinion more rewarding than Ball Pythons. With a ball python after about a month you have a good idea what they're going to look at their whole life, the exceptions tend to be morphs. However Blood Python's patterns change every shed! My little girl is in shed now and I can't wait to see how her pattern changes.
Oh yeah: When a blood bites you, you know it! They have considerably more teeth than a ball :P

I'm not joking, I'm sitting there in front of her cage thinking to myself as she noses around that it's been a long time since I've photographed her eating.
Chris grabs me the camera, and in between him handing it to me, (where she is just mouthing over the head), and me taking the cap off and turning the camera on, she has it almost all the way down where you see in the pic, then one more second and all you see is the tail tip!
What a pig! :sunny:
Re: meaner than the average bear???
:8: No doubt they can eat! Wellllll... .that explains her eyes! Her left is watching Chris, and her right is on you, and that thing you keep pointing at her... :weirdface HAHAHA!

Re: meaner than the average bear???
Yeah my summatran is really tame even more so than some of my bp's my borneo on the other hand is a bit hissy not aggressive though she will calm down with time and handling though. Overall very docile snakes just like with anything though they do have to capacity to bite if pushed to do so.

Yeah my sumatran Has gone through a pretty drastic color change IMO his head has darkened up a bit and hes overall darker that when he was a hatchling. He's just a big softy and sweet as sugar
