Fancy Mice?
Anyone feed their BP's fancy mice? and do they eat them ok?
-
Re: Fancy Mice?
Fancy mice are regular mice.
No difference, but some petstores don't sell fancies at feeders because they are vaccinated, which could be bad for your snake.
So make sure to mention that your buying feeders.

Re: Fancy Mice?
Where in the world did you hear that feeders/pet mice and rats are vaccinated? There are no such vaccines that exist.
You eat cattle that are vaccinated, it works the same way. We live, the snakes would be fine if the feeders "were" vaccinated. But since they aren't, it's a moot point.
And fancy mice are the same as "feeder" mice. Most of my breeder mice and feeders are "fancies", brindles, black&white, silver brindles, long haired, rex, etc. They seemingly taste just as good to the snakes :)

Those look cute and mouth watering.....
Do snakes have salavatory glands?

Re: Fancy Mice?
i have used them as feeders for years.
-
Re: Fancy Mice?
Well thats good cause i just got a lot of them, and i hope they get busy fast.

Re: Fancy Mice?
just like ball python and royal python are common names for Python regius, fancy mouse is the common name for Mus musculus. all the mice kept as pets and feeders are fancy mice. field mice, deer mice, etc., are not fancy mice... But even your PEWs are still classified as fancy mice...

Re: Fancy Mice?
All my colonies are "fancy" mice.
-
Re: Fancy Mice?
my colony has half and half, but I did find my Albinos bred better and had larger litters. After that I lost count because I put them all together:oops: But yeah, I went through three fancy males and when none of the bred I picked up one albino and a month later I had six litters:gj:A little off the point but I thought id share that, I read somewhere that albinos made to have more litters in labs long ago? doubt it but we will see who replys to this!

Re: Fancy Mice?
I have come to the same conclusion. Seems as though the albinos mature quicker, therefore produce quicker. My core breeder female just died. But she was albino and popped out 18+ everytime. I was lucky to get 10-12 out of the 'fancies'. But nonetheless, I enjoy the fancies more. If I am going to be cleaning up after them I might as well like what I am looking at. LOL

Damn 18+ from a litter???
I got 8 and 9 from two different moms so far, but then again it is their first litters with me and probably over all.

Re: Fancy Mice?
I have a couple groupings of albino lab mice and a bunch of fancy mice. I like my fancys. But I have also got them down to good production numbers. I have litters of 15-25 typically from every mom. But my albino lab mice will have litters of 18-30. I also have albinos I produced here.. Which also tend to yeild me high numbers as well. Normally not less than 18.

Re: Fancy Mice?
30??!! 30??!! Really THIR-TY babies??!!! HOLY CRAP!!!! That's a lot!!! One interesting note, when I worked at PETCO,(for 7+ years) I had two BP customers who asked for the fancy mice. I could never figure it out because the fancy mice(ridiculous as it sounds)were a DOLLAR more. Both customers told me their BP would only eat colored mice. Weird, huh?

I just counted 26 in a new litter.. I have heard that as well.. mine dont care. white.. fancy.. its a mouse.

Re: Fancy Mice?
yep.. my snakes dont care either. I accidently bred some fancy mice (had bought a female as a pet for my son and thought I had bought an other young female to keep the original one company  ). ended up with three litters, with each litter getting consecutively larger in number. the last litter had about 22 babies.. but the snakes ate them just as nicely as the albinos I buy.

Re: Fancy Mice?
i think when Royal pythons were more likely to be imported they tended to go for darker mice cos they appear more natural as white mice or other prey items are not that common in the wild! I feed fancy mice but my albino swiss webster mice do produce huge litters!!
