Wet Mouse

I was wondering, when i feed my snake, i usually get the mouse a little bit wet. Just a few drops on the back. Is this bad for the snake? I remember seeing a video where a guy said that water had to be conditioned but i couldnt find any reptile water conditioner... I was also wondering if it would effect his eating habits. I resently increased his food from 2 mice every 2 weeks to 2 mice every week. Its been like this for about 2 months now, but he has seems to want more after. I understand all snakes are in 'Eating Mode' for about a hour after feeding, but he is like that for days after. I cant see it actually being hunger seeing as he didn't do it when i was feeding him every 2 weeks. If you have any answers please post. Thanks.

I can't think of any reason why it's bad for the snake...but I also don't see the benefits/reasons why you do it :confuzd:

well how big is your snake? maybe he really is still hungry...

I'm curious too! Why do you put drops of water on the rodent before feeding it to your snake?

Maybe he is feeding f/t and in the thawing process it may get wet. Either way you are fine, a lot of mine when striking will actually drag the rat in their water bowl and still eat with no problems or consequences.

It must be a hatchling if your only feeding it two mice a week.

When I'm feeding f/t I've had leaks in the bag, where the entire mouse gets wet. No issues. I just dry them off real quick before offering them.

As for the water conditioner, I don't think it's necessary. That's mostly to take the chlorine out of the water, but if the water is safe enough for you to drink then it's ok for your snake. (especially in such a small amount) Now I do leave water out overnight to put in the water bowls to allow the majority of the chlorine to evaporate so that it's not an issue.

He is 5 and a half. I was told to start feeding him more. They are adult mice. I'm sort of on a strict budget, I'm 14 and am getting 10 adult mice every few weeks. (f/t) It costs me $14.00 which is a pretty good deal. I get them wet on porpose and accidentally but never soaked. I do it to help prevent dehydration, I'm sure it isn't a huge issue, but it rests in the back of my mind. Any way, he is almost 4 ft long, and I dont remember how heavy he is, I took him for an exam in march, that was before i started feeding him more. Any way, I'll talk to my supplier and maybe 'up' to jumbo mice or juvanile rats.

All of my rats are fed wet!:D

its just extra water for hydration can't be bad i mean i make sure my f/t mice and rats have a bit of water on them since i never see my snakes drink from water bowls.

Doesn't mean they don't. I catch them drinking from time to time :)

If you think about it, their water is in a bowl, where it evaporates anyways. Most likely, your snake isn't diving in right when you change the water (i know some do lol), but most of the chlorine evaporates over night. I see no real reason to put any conditioner into it at all. :cool:

As to the rat being wet, most of our FT are soaked when we offer it. Yummy

my F/T are soaked when i feed. more hydration.

i know but it seems to me the only timme they are ever in the water was when i first got them i mean yea i dont watch them 24 hours a day 7 days a week but to me it seems they would rather hide, eat and not drink

Thanks, so theres noting wrong with getting the mice wet, good. Hey, what do they do when the drink water? Do the scoop it up with their mouths? They can't lap it up... so whatt do they do?

I don't think that the water really hurts anything but it sounds like its time for you to switch to either rat weanlings or small rats. even two mice per week aren't enough after they weigh 400-500 grams.

Lol, cool. My supplier is gonna bring me 'Jumbo Mice' tomorrow, we'll see how we do with those.:)
