Mac VS PC
I've gone through 2 Dells (laptop and desktop) in the past 4 years. The desktop died out last week and I just bought a macbook on monday. I'm really digging the mac. I was just wondering what everyone else preferred.

I hate dells.. but I have the only dell right now that I would ever make an exception for. Dell Inspiron.
Best running top rated laptop of my life.
Dell desktops are.. well.. not the best.. neither are other types of laptops.
Anyhow, this is more a question about software? Mac is more of a competitor with Windows PC soo.. I prefer Windows because thats what I'm used to. I love Macs, but I think they are more useful in a studio where movies, pictures, and animations need to be created and edited. I like windows because it's more friendly for families and casual internet surfing/ computer using.
I HATE Windows Vista. I will only get XP. EVER.

Thats what I've always heard but i feel like the mac I just got is so much easier to use than the PC's I've had. Everything just makes a lot more sense to me.

Re: Mac VS PC
MAC For th win!!!!!
I have used both but after i converted to using macs my first year in college i will never go back to a pc... Cuz my Mac runs OSX and XP :D
-
Re: Mac VS PC
between the two, there really isn't a whole lot of difference between what the software can/ can't do, and for the most part the hardware is pretty comparable. If you do ANY gaming, go with pc, especially if you play newer games. for general computing, i'll say pc only because that what i'm used to and my actual first choice (linux :salute:) isn't on the list. my roommate got me hooked on it and its the only OS that's going on my laptop when i eventually format it.

Re: Mac VS PC
Oh boy this could be technical here.
I LOVE MAC for photoshopping, editing, and creating different types of videos and pictures.
I LOVE PC for their user friendly OS's, and you don't have to send it in every time to get it fixed. PC's have the majority of their problems taken care of by going to the a Entertainment store (Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.) and they have easy interfaces.
So, I like them both. But I get payed more to fix a PC than a Mac because I don't have to send it in.....lol.;)

Re: Mac VS PC
I just went out and bought a new laptop the other day. I looked at MACS and honest to god they're kind of a ripoff. A mac with an 80 gig harddrive and 2gigs of RAM is like 1100.00. I bought a Toshiba Satellite A505 or something Special Edition and it came with 4gigs of RAM and a 320 gig harddrive for 1,000 with a 2 year extended warranty and this thing is perfect! PC all the way.

Re: Mac VS PC
I use a new iMac at work and I have a custom built PC at home that costed me half as much.
My overall thoughts:
I'd trash my PC in a heart beat and buy another iMac.
If you want a quality, durable machine, go with Mac. Don't forget, Mac's can run Windows.
If you're on a super tight budget, go with a PC. Both have their pros and cons. It depends on how it's used. I completely agree that if you're a gamer, PC is what you need.

That is exactly why I went for a mac. I have a few friends that came to college freshman year with a mac and four years later still have their original computers. Most of my friends that had a PC are on their second one because they crapped out. I'd rather spend the extra money and get a quality computer that will last me along time instead of buying a cheaper one every 2 years.

About 2 years ago my wife paid over $3000 for a mac laptop when it was the latest and greatest version. She was influenced by a yuppie co worker to do so. When it was 3 months old the receptacle for the power cord broke. I called the local Apple facility and they told me that the first models of the tiger whatever it was had regular problems with the receptacles and now they used another kind because they had so many problems. I could bring it to them and for a fee they would change it to a new one. I went to the large mall that they were located in and found that it was located in the center of the place. The notebook slipped out of my hands on the long walk in and I was momentarily glad that I had bought her a very expensive Apple padded case made for her specific model. When I got to the Apple store they informed me that the screen was cracked and the unit was not repairable. They would now sell me a new one for $3000 and would generously transfer the data for free. They would not take into account that their defective plug in design was the initial problem. They have no concern for the customer. I told them that I would never own one of their products again as long as I live. If you want durability get a Toshiba Toughbook. They are Mil Spec. From now on I use PC's only. I'm on a Dell laptop right now.

I got the applecare, no worries. Apple has a sweet deal going now for students. I got $100 off the computer, $66 off the applecare, and a free Ipod touch. Can't go wrong with that. :gj:  I think they also have a discount on the printers, but I didn't need one.

Re: Mac VS PC
PC just because I am used to it, but MAc makes way better platform for A/V editing and graphic design. I really want a full Linux laptop set up from Lenovo.

So you dropping your mac makes it their fault? LOL If I fall and rip my new jeans... should Bootlegger give me a new pair?
I loooooooooove my Mac. I've always had a mac... They totally rock my world. In all the years I've had Macs... only had to take my puter in twice to get it fixed. They are sooo easy to fix yourself.
Love my Mac!!!:gj:

Re: Mac VS PC
I have a macbook pro that I have had for over 2 years. The only problem I have had with it was my roommate dropping a picture frame on it and denting the back case. This has absolutely nothing to do with the build quality of the computer. Actually it is a testament to its quality. A 10 pound picture frame with a 5 foot fall right to the back of the screen and the lcd is flawless. I replaced the back case my self no problems. Seems that even though it is a laptop its very easy to work on.

Re: Mac VS PC
Since I've got a BFA in Graphic Design... I have to say Mac. Yes they're more expensive, but the service plan is second to none, they're super durable, they're quick and zippy... and gosh darn it, they're pretty!
I do have an ancient PC though - I still use it, just not as much as my Mac.
-
Re: Mac VS PC
personaly, i think unless your talking about the toughbook, the physical durability claims are all bs, because i have herd stories from every brand being 'durable'. as far as customer service, yes mac is generally better. but thats what you get for paying a minimum $500 over a pc with comparable hardware. if they are going to charge that kind of money, you shouldn't have to pay that extra 250 for the care plan.

You should have taken the printer! I got my iMac a couple weeks ago and got all the stuff you just mentioned, the printer was free with a rebate.. I haven't used it yet but it was a free printer so I didn't turn it down :) I might use it when school starts back up for me

Re: Mac VS PC
It really does depend on what you want to do.
I use my computer for surfing the internet and writing stories. For that windows/pc are simpler and more user friendly.
-
Re: Mac VS PC
Even after 4 yrs of majoring in animation and graphic design, I still opt for PCs. Cheaper, just as good quality, easier to have repaired if anything goes wrong.
MAC is just a fad. It looks cooler so everyone has to have it. But I've experienced equal amounts of problems with both, and in the end, my pocketbook makes the final decision. PC all the way.
And despite claims to the contrary, MACs have been known to get viruses and hacked.

Re: Mac VS PC
i have an Imac. i also have vmfusionware on it so i can run windows as well.
i also have a macbook pro (gave it to my intern) and have owned macs in the past. i also on pc's. gotta tell ya, the mac ain't that much better than a PC. and for the money its really not that much better.
all of these people sayin' how great they are, are just internet surfers in coffee shops. i have put the screws to my mac w/ various software and have been a bit disappointed.
thank goodness it is a tax right off.
if it matters at all i have a computer graphics degree from purdue university - 03, do graphic design and photography as a living.

Re: Mac VS PC
My opinion on MACs is that they've stopped being computers so much as status symbols for a certain demographic. For a fraction of the price you can get a solid PC with far more power.
I'm a gamer, and I also work on a computer for web design, graphics, etc. I build my PCs from scratch and it is all I've ever needed.
Besides, if I wanted to, I could run Leopard on it. Not that I'd want to. :P
-
Re: Mac VS PC
I've worked with computers professionally for 4 years and I still would rather work on/with a PC than a Mac. I also don't like the whole snob mac culture... Also does anyone else realize that PC = Personal Computer, what the Hell is a Mac? It's like they try to say they're not computers...they're this magic box that just "works".
PS if you have any questions about your computer or even want to build one just send me a PM, I usually don't mind helping people out.

Re: Mac VS PC
i can't wait to see the pc's advertisements with seinfeld..... i hate those stupid mac commercials
-
Re: Mac VS PC
I'm a Mac guy all the way. My Dad is an architect and my mom a graphic designer. All I've ever known was Macs. I'm not one of those "hip guys" who got one because it was cool, I keep using it because for me, its the best.
PCs are fine, and XP is a decent OS. But in the long run I think Apple's give you more bang for your buck. And in my experience my friends with PCs have way more problems than any of my friends with Macs.
-
Re: Mac VS PC
For years, I never understood the Mac mindset. They seemed like fanatics bordering on psychotics. I never understood why anyone would want a computer that was second class and didn't run the majority of programs that were compatible with the rest of the world.
Then I got infected with a virus, even with a firewall, Norton security suite and taking normal precautions. It took me all weekend and a couple of nights of work to restore my PC. A friend of mine kept on me to look at the Mac line. I purchased one and have been a fan ever since.
When I bought a new PC, it normally took me a weekend to move all of my files and programs. When I bought a Mac, I was up and running within a half day.
There are a few software programs that I would like to run, but can live without them for now. Soon enough a competitor to PC's will build them. Mac's rule!

Re: Mac VS PC
I think what you buy a "tricked out" MAC for you'd be much better off buying a Voodoo :)

Voodoo's are grossly overpriced, and I actually used to work for a competitor of theirs and so I got to see some inside stuff with them every now and then and I wasn't impressed.

Re: Mac VS PC
Mac Mac Mac. I have had this Mac, that would be Apple Macintosh, for 8 years. Not one virus, not a single crash, it runs any software I could ever need, and it is indestructible! My mother has a Mac PowerPC that she has had for 15 years, that she uses for her computer drafting business, as well as her new G4. Not a single problem. PCs may be cheaper, but they are disposable. In my opinion a Dell has a one to two year life. Sure it only cost $400, but if you have to replace it, the cost just adds up. My only complaint is that Mac has developed an absurd "yuppie" status... thing... All marketing, and that definitely detracts from the quality. I don't use Macs because my TV told me to, I use it because it works.

It's good to see you've had a very positive mac experience but there is a reason why they hold less than 4% of the market.
-
Re: Mac VS PC
As soon as Apple opens their OS for supporting third party hardware, they will win my vote. That will not happen anytime soon, so PC FTW!
I am a gamer. There is no way I could go Mac. Now, as I said above, if they were to open their OS for others to build hardware for it, it would gain marketshare like no ones business, which would mean more games built for them, which would mean I would have to give them a serious look.
For now ... PC.

I don't think you can gauge market share as being very indicative of much. BMW has a very small market share, but makes some of the finest cars around.

Even still....how many people you know drive BMWs? If they're that great. why aren't more people buying them? Is it just a matter of price? Not as good MPG as some?

Re: Mac VS PC
We are all about Apple over here! After building 3 machines (including my super mega awesome gaming machine), I only use a mac now. My fiance is a CoCo programer so he got me hooked. We have an Imac, a mac mini, a powerbook, and a macbook pro. Not to mention we both have Iphones and every generation of the Ipod, minus 2 of the shuffles. We even have the instruction manuals from every product we have purchased in a display case. Yes, we are nerds. :P
I just tend to prefer my mac for ease of use and durability. This powerbook as been through just about everything and is still going strong. Plus, if we need to use Windows for anything, we just switch operating systems on the Imac. My family even prefers macs now!

Could be any number of reasons. Maybe they decided on a Mercedes or whatever. All my point was, is that you can't say that because Apple has a low market share that somehow they're inferior and PCs are better just off that. That's all.

Re: Mac VS PC
MAC IS THE BEST!!!! lol Sorry for the caps but I strongly suggest Mac their operating system is weird for first time mac users but they are so much better than PCs. not to mention you can go on apple.com and they have some awesome tutorials on their operating system. Plus you can get windows for a mac! if you put the operating system from mac on a PC you will be in big trouble if mac ever finds out. I have an iMac and I LOVE IT! The only real down side to mac is Hardware cannot be upgraded by yourself you have to get Apple to fix it. But if you spend the extra $300 you can get the apple care plan and that protects against anything that could go wrong. Oh yeah! if your a student for college go to an Apple store or online to apple and you can get a free 8 gig Ipod Touch! I even got a free Printer, scanner, copier but I got that at the store... may it be known that both the touch and printer were both free because of rebates! MACs RULE!

To be fair, if you spent the extra money to buy a quality pc instead of a cheaper one, it would last longer than 2 years. ;)

Technically, the Seinfeld commercials are going to be for Vista rather than pc's in general. Should definitely be interesting though... Seinfeld + Bill Gates as a comedy team?

MAC is my crack! :gj:

Re: Mac VS PC
Basically, the way I've always seen it is Macs are targeted towards people who just want to use their computer. They don't want to have to think about it or mess around with it, it should just work. PC's on the other hand, are more of a hobbyist's machine. You can do pretty much whatever you want with them. Save some money by buying the parts seperately and putting it together yourself? Yep. Want to upgrade the the processor because it just doesn't seem quite as fast as it was when you first got it? Sure can, and you don't even need to buy a whole new computer to do it. Not to mention you can totally change everything about the way it runs and looks. Between Windows and Linux you can pretty much make it look and act however you want. Sure, it's going to take a bit of tinkering and messing around -- but that's the fun part, right? ;)

Just out of curiosity, how is it that everyone gets these loads of virii and spyware on their computer? In the 10+ years I've been using pc's, I've had one virus, and and never had a problem with spyware.

Apples & Oranges (No pun intended). BMW has a Low US Market, but they're German based where they do pretty darn good for themselves. Dell is [newer] than Apple is and they have a very large market share. Apple's overall market share reflects greatly on the company as a whole. In the end it's one big pissing match cause it always come down to preference but if you want to talk numbers, the Mac loses, and loses hard.
BTW one of the main reasons you see so many macs in college is because Apple has big education discounts, and always has. Speaking of which this past week I setup computers for a Elementary school that were all based on Fedora, and they were for the children!

They look at naughty sites too much. No, seriously, many people don't do regular virus scans and spyware scans on their PCs and, that combined with inferior web-browsers (like Internet Explorer!) and poor judgement when opening spam-emails they shouldn't, can lead to the machine getting loaded up.
One thing Ive learned is that computers are like cars; you have to take of them on regular basis (regular scans, defragmenting, don't overload them with crap, etc).
Another thing to keep your PC running smoother is don't keep all your files on it, especially music and pics. Both of those fill up a hardrive really fast and start slowing it down really fast. I suggest getting an external harddrive to keep all that stuff on. Basically, if you don't use the file on a regular basis, it doesn't need to be on the HD.

Haha, I was actually going to make that same comment but decided against it. ;) I think part of it also has to do with poor choices for virus and spyware scanners also. Most people just use whatever comes with their pc when they buy it. McAfee, Norton, or AVG usually. All of which, if I recall correctly, have been caught multiple times taking money to remove certain spyware from their databases.
