HELP! What Kind of Boa???
I need help! I know that this is going to sound really ignorant but it is what it is :) When a family member could no longer care for their snake they came to me for a possible home. Long story short we ended up taking it home and it has worked out great, but we were told it was a Rainbow Boa and I didn't even second guess it because I could see the rainbow effect it had when in the direct sunlight. I decided to look around the web for pictures of other rainbow boas to compare with ours and quickly realized that I couldn't find any that looked like it at all!! I started looking at TONS of pics to try and figure it out but there are SOOO many! PLease let me know what you think!!

Re: HELP! What Kind of Boa???
Best guess is just a standard boa constrictor imperator.

Yes, they do have some "rainbows" in the sun also.
Definitely not a rainbow boa. :)
Re: HELP! What Kind of Boa???
Maybe a Columbian Red Tail?
Re: HELP! What Kind of Boa???
This is your common colombian "red-tail" boa. The rainbow effect is just iridescence from light interacting with the scales, not the type of boa.
Re: HELP! What Kind of Boa???
I think it's that phone game, some one says "red tail" boa, then on down the line it turns into Rainbow boa. They kinda sound the same right? ;)
Re: HELP! What Kind of Boa???
Im not an expert, but that definitely does not look like a normal BCI
Re: HELP! What Kind of Boa???
Yeah so that's just a normal Bci, has a great pattern though.
Re: HELP! What Kind of Boa???
look at how clean the pattern is, and very reduced, and almost no speckling
Re: HELP! What Kind of Boa???
I think it's a Bci. The head size relative to the body size indicates a Bci (Bcc's seem to have a larger head relative to body size), also, the body is a little bit more oval shaped and so suggests Bci, also, it seems to have large and noticeable jaw muscles that are not so noticeable in Bcc's.
So, I think it is a Bci with maybe a little bit of a specific locale thrown in...?
Re: HELP! What Kind of Boa???
I'll agree...very nice looking BCI. =)
Re: HELP! What Kind of Boa???
Thanks everyone! I tried to figure it out myself just by looking at pictures but couldn't find any that matched all his traits enough to say for sure it was the same kind. I thought with the tons of different snake pics I would have to come across one snake that closely resembled him :) I am going to look also, but so do BCIs get bigger than a rainbow would? If that's the case then I guess I have some preparing to do! :p
Re: HELP! What Kind of Boa???
Most BCI will stay smaller than some of the BCC, my BCI pair isn't much over 5 foot. The rainbow boas tend to be a longer slender snake compared to the BCI's so I wouldn't worry to much. Not knowing the feeding history so it is a guess but to me that one has lost the lengthy subadult look that most boas get so you maybe looking at about the adult size...but there are always exceptions.
Re: HELP! What Kind of Boa???
Yes, it will get bigger than a rainbow! Let me see if I can find FrankyKeno's pic of her female RTB.... *searches*
Here we go

Miss Tequila was on her very best behaviour. Sherrie said if she'd only had a bigger purse, she'd have snuck out the door with her LOL.

Just to give you a size reference, that couch they are sitting on is 7.5 feet long.
