Re: Buying Mazui Lab Block
Depends on how many rats you have and produce.
Contact your local Purina Mills dealer.:D
Re: Buying Mazui Lab Block
Currently I feed about 15-20 rats at any given time, but I am planning to expand the colony as soon as I can get some more racks built.
Re: Buying Mazui Lab Block
You have alot of rats to feed LOL. Buy in bulk.
Re: Buying Mazui Lab Block
My colony is not nearly as big as some. I'm having to expand due to the fact we have 12 snakes now and are hoping to breed two of our snakes this coming season.
I want to stick with Mazuri as that is what I feed now, but I'm wondering if the 6F is the correct one to buy. I normally buy the smaller bags at the petstore, but I go through one of these in about 2 days.
Re: Buying Mazui Lab Block
You should be fine with that size, it is what I use now. It will last a while but overall will save you a lot over those dinky bags. I was using a Harlan 2018 which had 18% protein but the Maxzuri 6f with 16% protein seems to be working just fine.
Re: Buying Mazui Lab Block
Thanks. Yea, it will save me a ton. The little bags are about $6 a piece so buying a 50lbs bag for only $30 will save me a lot. Of course, shipping is a bit of a drag. $22 for ground shipping so it comes out to a little over a dollar for each lb of block. Still cheaper.
Re: Buying Mazui Lab Block
Have you looked around for a feed store that might sell it?
Sounds like a lot for shipping.
I am in Stafford and I have 2 stores semi near me that sell it. Actually...one of them is in Woodford. It is also like 3-5 dollars cheaper there than where I normally go...but the gas prices would make it not worth the drive for me.
I pay about 20.00 for a bag (40 lb i think...maybe less  ) of Mazuri at Booth Feed on Rt. 17.
Re: Buying Mazui Lab Block
With gas prices the way they are, its just easier for me to have it shipped. It came out to be about $55, but that is still cheaper than what I was paying in the store. 50lbs might last me a month.
Re: Buying Mazui Lab Block
yea...I am pretty sure it is a 40 lb bag. I only drive 10 minutes to get it so it's def worth it for me. I have about 30 adult rats at most times and however many babies. I usually use 1-1 1/2 bags about every 2 weeks. I also feed them other things too. ;)
Anyhow..good luck.

Re: Buying Mazui Lab Block
Muzuri only sells 25 and 50 lb bags. :D
Re: Buying Mazui Lab Block
I go through 50 lbs every 2 weeks for 30-35 breeder rats and lots of feeders.
Re: Buying Mazui Lab Block
50# lasts awhile. I dislike buying too much at one time, because it can go moldy if it sits too long. I guess that if you stored it up right that might not happen. But horse grain.. chicken feed.. I can't buy too much at once because it infallably molds at the bottom!
You could add/mix in variables, sich as Kashi cereal and cheerios, etc. to provide variety and stretch it out. I do!
Re: Buying Mazui Lab Block
A few months ago I post a thread with some info that I found that might help you. A rat eat 21g/day of food. Mice eat 3g/day but waste like 5g/day so it makes around 8g/day.
1 pound = 454g
Hope this help!!!
Re: Buying Mazui Lab Block
I've always wondered how much I should be feeding them. Maybe I overfeed them? Should I weigh the food I give the rats? I tend to just scoop it and put it in the cage. (we have mostly cages, but my roommate is going to build me some racks.)

For cages, I have a large hopper tied to the side of them all. Fill it to the brim when I change the litter once a week. They sometimes need a fill up in the middle of the week if the cage has some extra rats.
For racks, I fill it up the food area of the top. It's sectioned off, and has enough room for a full weeks worth. I fill that up when I clean cages too.
Most rats are very good about feeding themselves the right amount of food. The bag says to give them 24/7 access to lab blocks, and I do. It works well.
The hard part is in those mixes of seeds and stuff where they pick out the best tasting stuff and leave the less flavorful nutritional things behind. (not that any seeds mixes have anything good in them)
