Why you need to selectively breed
Well... I have shown a couple of people this, and this is not something I'm particularly upset about, but can you all tell me what morph this is?
This is Lily.

Re: Why you need to selectively breed
If anything it might be mojave based on the pattern and the color in the 'black' areas, but...there's always the possibility it's something else. I'm not always the best at identifying the more subtle morphs.

LOL Robs - beat me to it. ;)

Re: Why you need to selectively breed
Id laugh for hours if you said pastel.
:) no idea heather, looks like a cinny to me!
Re: Why you need to selectively breed
Black pastel all the way,,,,
Re: Why you need to selectively breed
I'm thinking Black Pastel too.
Re: Why you need to selectively breed
Alright people...
Here is why I posted. She is a Black Pastel. A very light Black Pastel...
Here is a half sibling to her.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...s/P1040826.jpg
I was trying to breed for darker, and yet somehow the Black Pastel male managed to in one day overwhelm the other males chances with the female.
This is the mom.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...s/P1050189.jpg
I was stunned at the absolute difference between her clutch and those of the other females (darker animals)
Now depending on what you are going for, this may have been something you would have wanted to make, but she is not the most stunning of Black Pastels by any means.
I plan on using her for Pewters and the lighter morphs to make them pop a bit more.
The reason why I posted this is that it may not be the ultimate of what YOU see in the morph, but they are and can be used to make other things much more interesting.
Is she ugly?? Not to me...
Is she the best example of the morph?? Probably not. Some people didn't even know what she is..
Is she a Black Pastel?? Absolutely :)
Look into your projects and use your animals wisely.
Breed for what you think will enhance the animals for the future!
You are making life, and beautiful ones at that :) Living art!!!
Re: Why you need to selectively breed
Heather i think shes a cutie, haha i bet she would make some great combos look even better.
Re: Why you need to selectively breed
I have a black pastel male that looks very similar. I'm hoping to put him with a real dark normal female for the same reason. But I also have him lined up to spend time with a nice bb cinny girl this fall as well....
I think the "normal" influence in the morphs is huge and you should always take that in to account when breeding.
:-)
Re: Why you need to selectively breed
I couldn't agree more Heather. It's very interesting to see the color changes of one particular morph. Something to remember is morphs are probably to some degree just as variable as normals are.
If someone would have said these were black pastels I probably would have believed them.......however they are cinnies from a very dark normal. :)

Excellent post, Heather! It reminds folks that it's not just about tossing a male and a female snake together and hoping for whatever. There's so much more to it and then there's revamping ideas based on what you do end up hatching out (since we all know the Ball Python Gods occasionally like to laugh their butts off at our pitiful efforts).
Re: Why you need to selectively breed
awesome post heather....just goes to show theres a lot to be said for selective breeding.
Re: Why you need to selectively breed
Awesome post!
This is why I chose my animals based on color and what I want the end result to be. All of them aren't representative of their morph, but they all have something that I want to experiment with.
Re: Why you need to selectively breed
Heather Heather Heather, all this over yet another ugly normal?
You've got to get over this black pastel thing. There is no such thing.
AHAHahahHAHAHAhahahahaHAHAHAhahahahah
I'm still thinking about them.
Re: Why you need to selectively breed
Great post Heather. That light black pastel should produce some killer looking pewters. I'm a big fan of the lighter cinnies so I like your light black pastel, but I hear you about the importance of selective breeding. I wish I would have been more selective on the first few normal females I picked up.
