    Are there designer Savanna Monitors?
    Hey all,
The title pretty much sums it up...are there designer savanna monitors? I remember in past year seeing 'red' savanna monitors advertised in a couple of classifieds, and I have seen Savannas high in red and yellow...now I dont believe these were codom or recessive traits, but selectively bred. I was just curious if there is anything designer like out there? Feed my curiosity! :P

    Thanks all! :salute:

I don't know a lot about savannahs but if I remember correctly I think brian at bhb and I believe sean and celia at exotics by nature are currently in the process of breeding albino savs right now. Other then that I have no idea about other morphs so maybe one of the members more informed about monitors will respond in on this topic.

I think it would be a shame to breed albino savs. It is one thing to breed albino pythons and boas that don't want or require bright lighting or sunlight, but for a monitor that requires bright basking spots and possibly UV, and knowing the issues that albinos have with sensitive eyes and skin, it strikes me as wrong.

Here's the pic of the Albino Savannah of BHB's in Daytona. I was talking to someone about it when we were looking at it and he said something about stripes and hypos and such as well. Don't really know much more than that though.

They're nice looking, I won't argue that...but at what cost to the animal?

Only one or two people successfully produce captive savanna monitor hatchlings each year. Savs are imported in mass quanity every year, yet that is all the reptile community is capable of. People have to learn how to breed them first......and it will still be a long time until you see any 'designer' monitors for sale.

I don't even think they can say the albino sav is genetically reproducable by todays standards.....They have an adult sav with some 'het' savs......yet have never produced any cbb albino babies from the group.....is that proven?

I get excited over seeing any CBB Savs.....morphs??.....ha ha....these are not simple pythons. Your co-dom question would be like asking when you will see mojave ball pythons with only two people in the US breeding two pairs of normal ball pythons that only produce eggs when they feel like it.

Do you know that some of the cool monitor species that were kept in captivity have all but faded away from being captively produced? Most people don't know what a Kimberly Rock Monitor or a Pilbara Rock Monitor look like......they are some of the neatest and most colorful lizards around....smaller and easier to provide for than savs. too ;)

BHB is working with Proexotics on the albino sav project. Good luck to them. They will need it to successfully breed monitors.

...and most of the stuff you see in classifieds is just promotional garbage used by importers and wholesale buyers to push 'normal' import monitors on people at higher prices. If they can import a baby sav. for around $5....then call it 'red' or 'hypo'....and sell it for $125.... then they just made a decent profit on that animal.
