I'm not particularly interested in keeping details of my collection online but it looks cool for people with a couple snakes that are strictly pets.

I signed up yesterday. I like it, and will continue to use it. I also have note cards as well. Kinda like a backup.

You can make part of your collection, or your whole collection private... or hide only feeding records, or you can not use any pics or descriptions at all, just ID#'s... I hear what your saying, but there are ways to access the software and not display your collection. It's seriously made my record keeping SO much easier. I've thanked D several times for turning me on to it...

I shipped out two babies yesterday, I just printed their record page with pic ID, hatch date, weight, etc... and then I printed their feeding records... Totally EZ, and it looked 100X better than my hand written cards!

I registered yesterday to check it out, however I don’t see the point  (except if you want to share your data with others)

If you only want to keep data on your snake(s) you are better of with Degei in my opinion.

I gotta agree with Deborah on this. It looks like a good way get a little community going and being able to share what's going on with your animals and breeding efforts. I just cringe at the thought of keeping all my records on there and somewhere down the line the site closes down or starts charging for access to pay for all the bandwidth being used.

I like it. Computer in the snake room makes record keeping easy. If it gos down that will suck...no pun intended.
I linked the baby pics on my website to the iherp page for that individual, so if anyone is interested in a particular snake they can see the tracking for it.

Re: iHerp love it or hate it?
Yeah, it wouldn't be TOO bad losing that data for just a couple of snakes -- but just the sheer amount of time lost for a mid to large sized collection. To be fair, the same thing could happen with Degei if you aren't meticulous about your backups. If your computer happens to crash and you don't have your backups stored in another location, it'll be the same situation.

Back it up. Go to your animals tracking page. Click edit, select all, edit, copy.Open notepad or word or open office, ect. paste. Overwrite the files once a week with updated info. Keep a copy on your hard drive and a copy on a usb stick or whatever external device you have.
    Better safe than sorry

Rock on! Degei is the best...

I also don't think I need the people who run the site knowing what's in my collection. I might have some super secret projects going on here! :O

Re: iHerp love it or hate it?
I've tried Deigi and some other record keeping software and nothing was as simple as the "batch track a group" option on this site. My record keeping takes literally about 1.5 minutes for about 50 animals. Maybe I wasn't using Deigi right... but the iherp software is awesome.

As far as the people who run it... it's one guy, named Aaron, a real nice guy who is really into chondros... I don't think you'd have to worry much about super secret ball projects. I get your point, just throwing that out there.

Just to chime in on a couple notes here.
The owner of iHerp and I have talked shop in depth numerous times (actually on a telephone... <gasp>) and have a good relationship with each other. To my knowledge, he has no intention of ever charging for the tracking features that are on the site at this time. Also, as far as the security, rest assured that he is meticulous about the security of the site and an all around stand up guy.
Reguarding the comment about bulk tracking in Degei, it has been available for several years, however, animals are not "grouped", you just have to put a check mark on the ones you want to select for the "bulk" activity and click ok, to post it to all of the selected animals. Here is the screen: http://www.eyehit.com/degeihelp/advanced/bulk.htm

Lastly, as noted, whatever you use, BACK UP YOUR DATA REGULARLY! and that doesn't just mean to file on your computer, that means every so often you should burn a cd of it or use a flash drive if you want to be secure.

Re: iHerp love it or hate it?
Thanks Damon for that screenshot. I like the iherp batch tracking groups because it remembers what each snake ate at the last feeding, and usually I am feeding the same size to the same snake so I just have to click one button to record a whole group.

Re: iHerp love it or hate it?
No problem Diana, for the record, Degei remembers the last prey item fed also (always has), and if you wanted to feed all animals, at once, the last thing they ate, you could do that by asigning them to a "master rack" and then feeding that rack. I think a rack feed takes a couple clicks. There is however a limit of 998 animals per rack...

iHerp is free, iHerp may not be the best way to keep track of my animals, but the price is right.

Free is not always better. I have and will gladly in the future give my money to a guy like Damon who does a great job with his application and supports it well!

Agreed, I see no reason to change from an A+ product like Degei.

I did not find iherp practical for a large group of animals, say 70+. I prefer Degei all the way. Not only does it keep track of my snakes, but feeder inventory, clutches, geneology, vendors, and sales. Prints sales receipts and just about any type report you can think of. You can assign feeding intervals for your animals and print out a feeder pick list for the day, or a day in the future. It then tells you how many of each feeder you need to thaw out based on what the animals ate last time. So simple and easy in my opinion.
