how many PET snakes do you have?

so just wondering how many snakes people have.
and i mean PETS.

so if you breed it its not a "pet".

i currently have 17, with 2 in the mail and picking up some in a few weeks.


i know i have a small amount BUT
mine are all pets, we breed nothing, and we treat all of them like there our one and only babys.

GIVE ME THE NUMBERS!

I also have a pair of BCIs. For the next 3-4 years they are pets and then they are not if I decide to try my hand at breeding?

Why are they not pets if you breed them? Each and every one of mine are pets first, and breeders second. Their health and well-being ALWAYS comes first. If they could never breed another day of their life, they'd still be here as beloved pets.

Since I need to wait to make sure I'm qualified to answer, I'll hold off on the count.

exactly what I was going to ask! What is the deal with this? I am 32 years old and have 16 snakes so far. the youngest is less then a year old... I figure there is a chance that one or two of these snakes might even outlive me! (I believe the max age might even be more then 40 years!) While I do plan to sell off some of the babies I produce to put money back into the hobby, The snakes I have now will be with me until the end. (their end or my end)

So please tell me how you figure that just because I let them have children, (what they were made to do) how / why does that make you no longer consider them a pet?!

I was thinking the same thing. All of my snakes are pets, what's the difference if they breed or not? :confused:

My definition of "Pet" is an animal that lives with me, that I am responsible for, feed, vet care etc. It's no difference from if I had dogs as pets and one of them became gravid. 100+

But since the poster obviously has a different definition:

Snakes that I don't plan to breed (plans can change) 2
Red Corn - Ruby
Bull snake - Bully
Ball Python - Mo'Money

I feel like everyone else, they are all my pets. I have one bp, who was my first snake, that I don't plan on breeding though.

Just one.


And I think people may see a lot of breeder's snakes as 'not pets' because of the large scale breeders who keep their snakes in racks and don't even name them except for maybe numbers to keep track of them.

Which is fine and dandy if that's what you want to do and you take care of them, but having dozens of nameless animals in a drawers, no matter how well cared for, may come across as, I dunno, 'cold' and impersonal to people- especially when people are more used to things like dogs and cats which you interact with and see more.

Disclaimer: It's not necessarily what I think, just what may be going on in other people's heads.

I would argue that keeping them in racks and tubs is not cold and inhumane, but rather providing the closest to what they would naturally gravitate towards in the wild, a snug, warm environment with the added benefit that food and water are provided for them without having to range in the open where they are more vulnerable to predators.

Each and every one of my snakes are named, and most of them will have a place in my breeding plans as well.

I have one pet snake it is my first. :D

I would have to agree with Robin and the others as well.. Even though I have 37 snakes. Ranging from a few years old to hatchlings. Each of them have a name. With the exception of a few new ones I got this past weekend. Their care and well being is my top priority if theres something wrong it gets seen by the appropriate person just as you would a pet so I personally consider them my pets first.

Leopard Geckos
Cats - who both think are humans

My snakes are pet first and foremost but I do happen to breed them also.

I agree with Robin. The few snakes that I have all have names, are very much loved, cared for properly tho they live in tubs in my snake rack. They are my pets even tho I breed a few of them too. 6 of them total.

i have 13 BPs as of right now & 1 more on layaway ! lol

I intend to breed all 7 of my ball pythons (2 mojos, 1 spider, 1 pastel, 3 normals) I do have one boa who is strictly a pet.. i even bought a male so there would be no incentive to breed him :gj:

Well I have 9 snakes all pets and soon to also be breeders. I am foreseeing that by this time next year I will probably have doubled my collection if not more.

2 (if you look at my sig you can see what they are) and later on I plan to find mates for them.

I have one BP. My daughter named her Rainbow but I refer to as Sweetie lol!!! I am a new snake owner. So I am trying to put all my time and energy into taking care of her. I don't want to move onto others until I know that she is in the proper environment and I have the swing of things lol.

BUT I have to say that I think breeders are important to owning a pet. They are PROS i guess you would say. And their experience is priceless...they are the original PET OWNER. If it weren't for them I wouldn't have a pet. ADDITIONALLY, the breeder is the one that I LEARN from. So I have nothing but the UTMOST respect:gj::gj::snake:

What i meant is...

they are pets, but you didnt buy them or get them for the sole purpose of breeding...

I have 5 snakes. I will start breeding soon, but I will still consider them pets when breeding.

im not saying if you breed it, its not a pet...
what i meant was, IF you bought an animal for the sole purpose of breeding, then i dont consider it a pet, i consider it a investment..

or hobby.

not a pet.

oh ok, I guess its personal preference. Because not only is it an investment, its a responsibility. Thats what I think a pet is.

its just a preference...

i think if someone buys an animal for the sole purpose to make money, its not a pet....

i agree but like me i bought my carpets as pets and possibly to breed next year =]

i have 8 snakes. i love them all and they are all pets. i did originally get my 2 anery KSB's to breed with my normal but i love them just the same.

if my balls breed id sell them off and same if i ever get a girl BCO or BCI and they wanted babies id breed them and sell them. but they are all just pets.

i am hoping to get back up to 9 or 10 by next spring, but i doubt that will happen =]

I bought my snakes first and foremost because i found them to be unbelievably beautiful animals (pets), thats how it started.. the added bonus of mojo x mojo is having the BEL something i wouldnt be able to afford if we didnt have two mojos, same thing with pastel x spider, pastel x pastel, exc.. our first supers/bees/exc will all be pets as well, for our personal collection. The added bonus of profit from babies we do not intend to keep is where the business comes in.. were certainly not looking to get rich and we do not intend to have hundreds and hundreds of snakes either..

Pets first, breeding is an added bonus. My boa is strictly a pet, i think they are beautiful snakes also but do not have a desire to breed boas, i do have the desire for BPs though.

I have 2 snakes and lots of animals... I do love each and everyone of them (llamas, goats, ducks, hens, lots of rabbits that I breed), etc.

My two snakes are a normal corn and a ball python that will arrive tomorrow around noon:gj::gj:!! And I'm very excited.

I don't intend on breeding because I wouldn't be able to sell even one in my part of the woods. Anyway, I have enough without starting to breed... They're both my pets and I will take very good care of them.

I bought them from people who couldn't keep them anymore. I like buying dogs and other animals from people who (for any personal reason) aren't able to take good care of them anymore. I don't judge those people. At least, they don't let their animal suffer and sell it or put it up for adoption.:gj:

I have 9 snakes at the moment. While a couple of them may become breeders in the future they were all bought because they were a species I was interested in and wanted to experience owning. I didn't get any of them thinking, "Oh I'm gonna breed this one when it gets old enough." The closest I came to that was when I bought my pair of Irian Jaya Carpets but even then, I got them because they came as a package deal for a very good price. If they had been two males or two females I would have gotten them anyway.

Well, my snakes all started out as strictly pets, but once I got my first morph I had dreams of breeding to get the two morphs I want most but could never afford (BumbleBee and Albino).

So, all 10 of my snakes are my pets...but I also hope to breed some of them to hopefully produce those morphs. Selling 'extra' hatchlings is a bonus. A lot like what Ashlee said. :D

but it just somthing im sure everyone thinks of....

We own one BP and one corn. Tomorrow we are getting another corn, and plan to get another BP later this summer.

We got females for the first of each species because we knew they take more time to get up to breeding size, but that was not because we planned on breeding them at that point, but more of a "just in case" sort of thing. Now we are getting a male of each species to match. But that still doesn't mean we will for sure be breeding, although at this point I have a hard time imagining that we won't.

They are definitely pets first and foremost. If at any point we stop loving each and every one of them, it will be time to seriously reconsider what we are doing.
