A corn is a red rat snake.

This information is available in almost every book that has rat snakes in it.

Yup, all corns are rat snakes, but not all rat snakes are corns.

...man, a long long long time ago when I was a weee tike, I thought I read that ratsnake's eggs were much longer than that of cornsankes, almost more tubular, while corns had the more oval shaped eggs...but like I said I was a wee tike...:P

...is this true? ...or should I erase this from my memory?

Corn snakes tend to have very.. bright colorations while rat snakes are less subtle most of the time.
What everyone says about corns being a type of rat snake is true. :]

As for the egg thing, I doubt that. Unless they're referring to a much larger species of rat snake eggs in comparison to normal corn snake eggs I don't think so.. let me look it up..

Well I'm learning something new. According to wikipedia:
All snakes by the species name of 'Elaphe' are rat snakes. Including 'Elaphe guttata' which is the scientific name of a corn snake.
Apparently there are lots of different kinds!
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat_snake

Can't seem to find anything about the eggs. Anyone bred rat snakes?

Some are tubular...and some arent...but I think it depends on the species actually...not just whether it's a ratsnake or corn...

Well I did a search on 'ratsnake eggs' and these are the image results I came up with... http://images.search.yahoo.com/searc...b&fr=yfp-t-501

I've seen cornsnakes lay eggs that could pass for those of a pigeon and others that were long and looked more like a milksnakes eggs than anything else I've seen.

It depends on the female, her size and how large a clutch it is.

I've also had the same corn lay small round eggs one year and large oblong ones the next.

Me, too. I've seen them in all sorts of shapes and sizes. I don't think there's a definite characteristic to define their eggs.

For my part whilst it's true that all Corns are Rat snakes but not all Rat snakes are Corns ....

From my experience ....every Corn snake I've either owned or at least held was lovely and friendly and yet I've got 4 Rat snakes and they tend to be a bit more feisty - my Bamboo Rat snake is one of the prettiest you'll ever see but he's seriously unbalanced :)
