Wouldn't those be pretty heavy to slide out of a rack?

I've had more than a few chewed tubs. The biggest problem I've found is if you don't have the tub close enough to the wire mesh top. I think I had a 1/4" gap and that was too much, so I raised the tub so that it's only a 1/8" gap. That prevented most of the holes, but I have a set of three rats that can still manage to chew a hole in the corner. I let them have their hole that's about 2.5" in diameter, and they have never escaped.

The other problem I've found is that some rats will find out how to chew the small raised bump on the bottom of the tub. They seem to be content to just break through so the hole doesn't get that big, and most of the time a piece of duct tape on the bottom is all that is needed to keep it from growing.

Finally, one good way to prevent holes is to provide your rats something to chew on. I've been giving mine rawhide chews like you give to a dog and they seem pretty happy with them.

Thank for all the answers. But if I wanted to produce about 50 rats a week that were the size of smalls how many females do you think that i would need to meet that mark. And if you can figure it out over count a couple more just to be safe.

That will be around 5 girls a week, with at least 5 more for the 3 weeks leading up to birthing, so I suggest 55 female rats. Always a good idea to have more than you think you need, nature isn't on a set schedule. ;) (thats 10 extra rats just in case!)

Yes, at first. Lowes was selling a tub that was thinner and had a textured finish to them. Rats chewed out of them left and right, mostly in the corners. Lowes now carry a thicker smooth surfaced tub. I have switched to them and have not had a problem with them yet.

I haven't had a chew out ever, I give rawhide, wood blocks, dog treats...
    Anywho...

I do know this. If one rat does it, many will follow! LOL, little boogers. :nerd:
