Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro lens
Sigma EM-140 DG TTL Macro Ringlight
    Canon 400D body
    Canon BG-E3 Battery grip
    :D

The background appears black because of the ringlight. I didn't use any type of backdrops. These were actually shot with a swamp like pond in the background :)

    Beautiful plants Andrew!

I think I may have it figured out your secret to getting a black background.

I think I'm also likely wrong so ignore me. :]

Dang nice! I wish I could afford a camera like that. So you can get a black background like that with a lens? Can you get a white one too?

You get it with the flash ;) Due to the high shutter speed, the flash only has enough time to hit the main subject and reflect, where as it doesn't have time to hit the background...therefor it appears black ;)

So if I turn up the shutterspeed I should get that? Or do I need a flash thing more expensive then my camera...LOL! My mom bought a new Sony camera, it looks like a slr(is that the right abreviation?i don't remember) but it is a point and shoot, but I have only found one way for it to take good snake pics.

If you turn the shutter speed up without having the flash, you'll just underexpose the picture. ;) You need the flash. The flash also attaches to the hotshoe, so it fires off correctly, and at the right time...the cameras shutter release triggers it.
