ASF size compared to a mouse...
How big are ASFs as adults compared to an adult mouse?
Im going to start a colony of one or the other soon, and since I will be getting a RTB soon I know that mice wont be sufficient after a while for the RTB unless I want to feed multiples.
Re: ASF size compared to a mouse...
Some people have ASFs that are larger than mice by quite a bit.
NEVERMIND. My info is retarded.
That's just from my experience.
Re: ASF size compared to a mouse...
My adult male is 90 grams. My females are both 76-80 last I weighed... if that gives any comparison.

CONNIE those are huge!
Do I just have super small ASFs or something?
Re: ASF size compared to a mouse...
Most of my ASF's average around 80-110 grams, but I do have a couple males that are almost 150 grams.
By comparison the largest mouse I ever produced (that wasn't pregnant) was around 34 grams.

I think you may have some really inbred ASF's... LOL, kidding! I'm not really sure why yours are so small... I would try and outbreed them to see what size you start to get.
I have a lot of boys growing up to size, so I'll see what their average weight is as they grow up.
Also take a look at their nutrition, what your feeding them quality wise.

Hmm maybe. I did get them from a petstore.
My gram scale was broken at the time too. (which is why I'm getting a new one shortly) so we'll see how big they are when that comes. :]

if your getting a red tail boa you may want to consider getting rats,it won't take long for ASFR's to be just a snack.just a thought, have fun !
Re: ASF size compared to a mouse...
I think I really am just doing something wrong with the weight.
Ugh.
Re: ASF size compared to a mouse...
How long does it take for an ASF to get up to that 100gram weight class??
Re: ASF size compared to a mouse...
The new ASF Caresheet does list some basic average weights at certain ages. :)
Just from my own small sampling of ASF's...
One of my male breeders, he'd be about 6 months old now, weighs in at 75-80 grams (haven't weighed him in a bit so that's an estimate).
My original breeder male who is now just over a year old and retired with his two non-producing females is 145 grams or thereabouts.
In both cases the females are pretty close the males in size. I don't notice as much difference in size by gender as I normally see in my regular rats.
Personally as much as I like the ASF's and intend to use them more and more with our snakes, they will likely never be a prey item for either our boas or our very big female ball pythons just due to the number of very large feeders I'd have to offer them and the time it takes those ASF's to get to that size. For me it's more time and cost efficient to use regular rats for those larger snakes.
