    Smokey peaced out today...
So, my cat Smokey, is an indoor cat. Well he's supposed to be anyway , but someone left the back door open and he peaced out. I went out for a smoke and saw him chillin in the back yard  at first I thought he was my neighbors kitty and didn't give it a second thought. Went back in the house and haven't seen him for a while, so started tearing the house apart looking for him. Nowhere to be found. Went back outside and there he was again - as soon as he saw me he took off and is now under my deck and I can't get to him :(:(

So whats a good way to catch a scared kitty??? I doubt he'll survive outside for long...he's such a puss. Thank god he's not declawed so at least he can defend himself if need be. I'm just worried cuz the coyotes are rediculous out here!

Any ideas? Any suggestions would be appreciated ;)

    How sad and frustrating... :(

This may sound odd but....does your hubby have any large rodent traps? I would bate a trap next to the deck and hopefully he will take the bate...

    GOOD LUCK!!!! :please:

Why didn't I think of that!!!! We do have a trap...a couple actually, for catching & relocating pesky coons.

Going to go set it up now with a can of tuna for bait...

I have my fingers crossed - I love that stoooopid cat!!

My aunt has some declawed cats that she lets out.. worries me a bit but they seem to defend themselves and kill rabbits, birds, and rats all the time.. as well as bring them inside. D:

Tuna smells fantastic to kitties. ;)

That's always fun, we've done that a few times

Catching them is easy, releasing them is a whole other story :O

Skunks are easy. Keep a tarp or blanket in front of you and cover the trap, then move it anyplace. Caught quite a few without problems

The trap should do the trick! Let us know how it goes!

All 5 of my cats are indoor cats and I'll take them outside for like 10-20 min. 3-4 times a week (they're never by themselves, I'm so protective over them!). I would go crazy if one got out and I couldn't find it, they're my life! Its good you know where he is though, and he didn't totally run away, that would be scary.

He's still under the deck...meowing like crazy :rage:

I put his food out & a can of tuna as bait in the trap....still nothing. At least he hasn't wandered off. Yet...
I just hope we get him before dark....:(

That or hopefully he won't go anywhere! I hope you are able to get him soon - I know indoor cats can get spooked when they are out of their comfort zone, maybe he'll calm down soon and go to the food.

I hope my Smokey is OK - the big puss would never make it as an outdoor cat. He's way too pampered :( :tears:

It's storming something nasty outside.... Still no Smokey :(

I'm deciding whether or not we should start pulling the deck apart, so I can get under there. I'm frusterated and I'm sure Smokey is scared, poor thing. I don't even know if he's still under there.

if I had to guess I'd say 20+ feet. There is a hole that leads under our deck and thats where he went in, probably from the ground hog that lives under there. No where big enough for a person to fit in. This cat is driving me nuts!:weirdface :rolleye2:

Oh Lena I'm so sorry. My silly kitty ended up on TOP of my house once, and got stuck. Tuna was how I got her to try and come down. (I was SOOO close to calling the fire dept)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that your baby comes home soon.

I was thinking using pvc pipe and rope and making a snare, but 20+' is pretty deep and the pipe may be flimsy and hard to maneuver :(

Is there only one way in and one way out? Left over fireworks and scare it out?

    Good Luck!~ :please:

I completely understand. My neighbors haven't even moved in but they dropped off their dogs, which apparently HATE cats. My one cat has disappeared, and I found the other inside my fenced in yard, up the stairs on my deck in the mouth of one of these dogs. She fell about 2 stories and took off into the woods. I was out late at night with a flashlight until I found her. I find out later, these same dogs chased the little girl across the street, and the owners have no intention of keeping these dogs fenced in. I'm not too happy needless to say.

I'm hoping they just chased off my other kitty, and he got lost but has found a new home. :tears:

I had a cat that liked to escape every once in a while. We used to scoop her with the landing net. She hated it but it does the trick if you can get a long enough handle on one. Hope you get her! Good luck!

Is there a local SPCA in your area? Or something like it? I've seen on Animal Cops and other shows like that, families call them for help getting their pets out of tricky situations like that.

This winter (while it was -10 and windy) my cat, Gypsy got outside for the first time and I haven't seen her since. I don't have very high hopes that she survived a WI winter on her own...

    I second the net idea.

That and a long pole with a wood or cardboard square attached to the end, to "push" the kitty towards the person with the net.

You could even block off the under edges of the deck with cardboard to make one route of escape from the evil pole and board. :D

    Is Smokey fixed?

My cat Jake(who is an inside cat) gets out too, he see's my son open the door, he is going with him. Jake is fixed & has his claws as well. When he first started getting out, he would hide in the woods next to the house.. OMG! what a pain in the arse.

I used my broom to scare him out of where he was hiding, & he would run to the door he came out of. Try, & give some cat treats (my two are pigs when it comes to treats).
NOW.. he just sits at the door & waits! He gets out probably 1-2 times a week. And he comes back!! He knows where he can get some love, food & relax!!

I hope you can get Smokey inside soon!!!

    Ok... Still no Smokey. :tears:

:weirdface Bait is gone, but the trap is still empty. :rage: Damn racoons.

Anyway, since Smokey is being a butthead and won't come out from under the deck - I am removing the deck (just enough for me to crawl under there, I hope), needless to say I am not very happy about it. Stoopid cat! He's lucky he's cuddly and cute.

Damn I love that stoopid cat!

Oh, and thanks for the well wishes & ideas ;) MUCH APPRECIATED!!

Sorry to hear about this Lena, sounds horrible. :(

I had two cats do this, one I found her sitting by the back door like a sentinel about 9 days later, the other we had to remove a ton of siding and boards to pull her out of hole in the wall. (crazy cat!).

Not much to contribute other than well wishes that you get her back safe and sound... cats seem to be a bit like snakes, the minute you are convinced that it is not going to happen, voila... kitty (or snake) appears.

    *fingers crossed* for you.

It drives me nuts when people think that they can just let their dogs roam free. If that happened to me, with the cat in their dogs mouth...well....there would be a 12 gauge waiting...

I'm a dog lover, but when it comes to dogs starting to run free and kill or injure other animals...game over. And I know some may think that it is cruel...but when it comes to destruction of my personal property or peace...usually the county sheriff or humane society understand...

I feel bad that I forgot to post this yesterday!

I was so excited to the little bugger back. He was under the deck and we did end up tearing it up to get to him. He was scared to death! the previous night we had some wicked thunderstorms and this is the 1st & only time he has ever gotten outside except for on a harness.

Anyway, he's safe and sound :D

We went and celebrated too....lol well sort of

Went to the stock car races last night and got hammered....lol thats why I forgot to post the update.

Phew! I am glad that this had a happy outcome :) I completely understand.. our cat got out one night unbeknownst to us, and we did not figure out until the next afternoon.. we found him under the deck too; swished him out with a broom and he immediately ran back in. It is the BEST feeling to have them back home safe! I realllly have to watch out when company comes over though.. I shut Inky in the bedroom because people just cannot understand that the door cannot be open!
