    Help with Sexing- Has pics
So the first litter of ASF babies are 21 days old today, and I finally have enough courage to mess with them some. Turns out there are 18 not 16 as I had originally thought. Anyway, I am trying to sex them. I just wanted to post these pictures and get some feed back on whether or not I am doing this right. If I am correct them I am excited, because 3 of the 5 fawn babies appear to be female.

Those dont look 21 days old! LOL :P

Yup, after a few more days to a week and the boys will be pretty "obvious". I did have one rogue male in with the females when I sorted them on day 21, but in all, it was one mistake out of 30 some. :D

Thanks everyone!! Glad to see I am doing it right.

I know. It has been bugging me that they don't quite look to be three weeks old, but I KNOW for a fact they were born three weeks ago today. They look like they are about to open their eyes sometimes soon though. I think the problem is that there are 18 of them in a bin with only 1 first time mom. I think they are just going to be a little slow.

Here is a pic that makes them look a bit older:

Thanks for making this a sticky! I am very flattered. In an attempt to put more into in the thread I got some pics of mom and dad. I had so much trouble sexing them when I first got them, so here is the adult version:

Note: I don't think you can really see the nipples on one that is not lactating.

I have heard that asf's are mean. Is this true? I breed rats (non-asf) and they are not mean at all.

Mine are Definitely handleable once you get them out of the enclosure, i have noticed that they are territorial ;) Just dont mess with their hides and theyre pretty calm. I can Completely cover my male, and pet his head, and love him, and he hasnt a care in the world.

Great sexing Guide though! Ill be using this!

My ASF's, especially the large female, are tamer and more friendly than any other rodent I have ever had - even for pets.

I don't know why so many people say they are so mean.

My female is crazy territorial and will bite.. HARD.

My male is nice though. They're hard to handle though because their so jumpy.

okay, mine are about a month or so?? ummmm, is the boys 'part' very obvious? Those little buggers squirmed so much it was very hard to tell much. I did see what looked like parts on many and then on a few, it looked like lines in the fur where the teets would be?? Am I on the right track?

How old are these adults? Because my adult male, which I have no idea how old he is (I bought my ASF 1.2 adult already), has very big obvious "jewels."

I just want to know for future reference when I get pups :)

If you hang a male upside down by his tail his testicles will retract like that. Some males more than others.

Every one of my african adults...about 50 are absolutely vicious....they don't hesitate to attack. I have had them jump and bite my hands when feeding them. The little ones are ok..

I've tried sexing our first litter of our 1.2 ASFs but they all look the same "down there". They are only 17 days old though the oldest ones, the rest are 15 days old. Would it matter alot if I wait till 21 days old? The oldest ones are starting to open their eyes.

Im trying to pratice sexing them :)

You might need to wait a few more days if you are inexperienced with sexing. Otherwise once their eyes are open you should be able to sex them. Once eyes are fully opened I sex them and move them into a weanling tub.

Something i wanted to add. Ive had my ASF's for about 4 months now and had 4 litters. They take quite some time before the females get sexually mature. My original 1.3 set was about 6 weeks old when i got them, It took roughly 6-8 more weeks before the females got pregnant. So if your worried about sexing them, its alright to put the weaned ones in a container and let them grow a few weeks then you can really pick the males from females. I doubt they will breed by that point. I know mine havnt. I have 20 youth stored together and there all about 6 weeks now. Im just about ready to seperate males from females.

Will the males have nipples? I can tell the females, even at an early age have very visible nipples. That seems to be the best way of telling the females from males. What age should the babies be weaned? How soon can the babies breed? Thank you
