For those with a green thumb: What is this??
This plant sprouted up in my spider plants pot about two weeks ago and has grown really fast. It looks like corn?!? Corn is hauled regularly past the window that this pot is located, so it's not impossible. But it doesn't look like any of the other plants I have. I did repot it with Miracle Grow All Purpose Potting Mix but that shouldn't have random seeds in it... Any thoughts??
I tried to move the spider out of the shot as much as I could...

Definately a type of grass. Although corn fits in the monocot category, it doesn't look like it to me.

"A weed" is in the eye of the beholder. Dandelions are considered "weeds" but they make great soup, and are very healthy for you. I'm ashamed of everyone who said it was "just a weed" and to "pull it out". :(
Why don't you take it out of the spider plant pot (your spider is gorgeous btw. I love the high white. .... >_> It sounds like I'm talking about a ball python morph. You know you're a herper when... :8:) Anyway, why don't you take it out of that pot and re-pot it and see what grows? If it turns out just to be grass, then oh-well. It's still a living organism that you helped along - nothing bad about that. And if it's something a little more exciting than grass, well, then you have another potted plant! :D
Re: For those with a green thumb: What is this??
i may just let it grow and see what happens. i just hate killing live things! except the stupid spider mites that killed my dahlias! :(
BTW- Thanks for the compliment on my spider! I totally thought it was dead until about two months ago. But it's REALLY lookin good now! :D
Re: For those with a green thumb: What is this??
I'm going to have to agree with the others, it's a piece of grass haha.
It's a really nice piece though!:gj:

I have Spider plants landscaped around the house in strategic places. That kind of plant keeps sprouting in the midst of them. I keep pulling them up and they keep coming back.
I classify it as a weed cause it's growing where it's not wanted, but if you repot it and see what develops you can either be pleasantly surprised or throw out the results..trust me this is hard to kill.
Re: For those with a green thumb: What is this??
Careful there Princess, that looks like the type of grass that you can cut yourself on (kind of like a paper cut). Let it get settled in a bit before you try to handle it! I'd give it at least two weeks!!!

I bet that grass has formed some type of ... I can't think of the word.. not a parasite.. (I learned about it in Biology and Horticulture) but something that has learned to live in harmony with another organism while they both benefit, or one benefits and the other loses nothing.

A symbiotic relationship.:gj:

No way are they symbiotic. If you let that grass grow it will be fighting for the same nutrients and roots space as the ornamental. There is no benefit for those two plants to be growing so close together. It usually happens between a plants roots and certain fungal mychorhizae. Not usual between two plants.:gj:

it's so weird that i've had the spider for a couple years almost killed it (thought I did), repotted it and NOW it grows a little buddy! Only in my world... :D
