    Day 62
It's incubation day 62 and no hatching yet. But yesterday one finally got a bit of a dimpling effect to it, so I'm going to perform my first slitting attempt on that one. Hopefully nothing goes terribly wrong... Wish me luck!

mmmm are you sure they are on day 62.. Are the fertile? I'd cut them just to make sure they are viable and not still born embryos

Well, they are fertile... as for the still born thing, I guess I'll find out.

The best advice that I got from Kara at NERD was to candle your eggs right before cutting, mark with a light pencil mark an area on the egg where the hatchling is not there and also there is some space between the veining. Then when you are ready to cut you've got a nice guide to where it should be safest to do so.

Good luck and let us know how it went.

That's some good advice. Thanks for sharing that. :gj:

Well, I slit just one. I had someone candle it while I was cutting, so that's all good. I saw its little heat pits, and my sister said she thought she saw it move, but I didn't. Should the hatchlings give a movement response when you slit their eggs or are they oblivious? How long should it be before it decides to start pipping?

You can genlty poke the snake with a blunt object, and it will typically twitch. Many times they are oblivious when you cut the egg though.

Another question... my incubator has been heating up real fast lately and taking longer to cool down. I was wondering whether this was becuase the babies are giving off heat now... or if it's just that it's summer time and it's generally warmer in my room?

Could be either one of those factors indivually, or a combination of them both.

Would they not go off if they were still born?

Yes they are cold blooded but they take in heat and release it to keep the eggs at the right temps, so yeah they do give off heat.

Yes, I cut them yesterday. When I checked them this morning they were still just chilling in their eggs. Wish those buggers would come out! :D

Update- It's day 65 and it's official... my baby snakes are evil! :P

Nobody has come out of their egg yet. The worst part is that my incubator makes a loud noise when I open it and I'm pretty sure they retract back into their egg everytime, so I haven't even got to see much pipping action. What I would give to just have one of those suckers come out. I'm teetering on the edge of insanity right about now. :O
