I hope nobody still uses dial-up. I used to have it, and I almost shot myself in the face with frustration just trying to get to the Internet!

LOL I did this exact thread once. Not one person I believe admitted to using dialup.

we just got DSL about 3 months ago... but that's only because it wasn't available till then! i don't live too far out in the country, but the coverage just wasn't there. you had to get the satellite broadband for like $100/mo and only slightly faster than dial-up. no thanks! ironically our dsl is only $9.99... that's less than the last dial-up i paid for.

Yea, I was living out too far in the boonies, I had to live with dial up until I moved closer to the city.

Doesn't matter now because we have that high speed wireless. :P

Dial up is alive and well... at my grandfather's house. Although he only pays $3 per month for unlimited service, so you have to give him props for that. Besides, all he does is check his email and read jokes. :D

As for me... T1 all the way, baby!

I guess I'm all alone here. I still have dial-up at work (on it right now). I don't own a TV, a computer, or a cell phone and I love it that way. If not for my snakes I would be completely off grid.

I don't use dial up, but i remember hearing a story on NPR about it very recently, something about possibly raising dial up rates IIRC, and the number of people they said still used dial-up was A LOT more than I would have guessed. I want to say something like 40 million still used it. I'm probably making that number up, but it was way more than I would have guessed.

i live in sumner wa and there is a town about 20 miles from my house called enumclaw that still have to use dial up or really bad clear wire connections. Also, when i went to visit my great grandpa in montana about a year ago the only place that had the internet was the library. talk about living in the past lol

In my town, only about 25% of the residents have access to DSL. We don't have cable out here (if you want more than 1.5 channels, you need satellite TV), so it's satellite internet or dial up for internet if you're out of range of the DSL building.

DSL has only been in town for the last 4 years or so, and it's still only available to a small portion of the town. That's small town New England for you, though. I'm only glad I've got DSL available...dial up makes me anxious.

There are still a lot of people who live in outlying areas that are a long ways from high speed access...at least as we know it today. Every time we move, that's one of our larger considerations when looking for a new home...does it have high speed access. You'd be surprised at how many still don't.

Also...the "DUW" is a very handy warning on those days when the "high speed" connection is being goofy and slow. It happens. On those days, it's much easier if I can just avoid the picture threads.

I get a free dial up account from my DSL provider so I use it on my laptop as a last resort..

I have cable internet and I have since 2001 but my sister-in-law-to-be uses dial up and refuses to change eventhough she mostly uses her cell phone and her internet and land line together are as much as fast access.

Some people have real issues with change I guess.

Alive and kicking, I'm afraid! :(

Where I live, highspeed is just not an option. Seriously! I live 11 miles from what could even be considered a road. No joke! We do not get any tv channels even. 40 something miles from a town even.

Now, I suppose I could pay a ton of money for those terrible satallite providers through Directv (which we have for television) or Dish Network, but its too much money, and from what I hear, frankly not worth it.

This is the only drawback of living here. I absolutely love this place, I love having no neighbors! I love the quiet, and the wildlife, and the fact my chickens and goats and I can be as noisy as we like and no one will ever complain!

Dialup SUCKS! But in the large scale of things, it doesn't compare to the joy of living here. :)

Yeah I wouldn't mind seeing some pictures as well. I've always wanted to live on the outskirts of town. So beautiful.

I don't have dialup, but one of the proofers for the magazine still does - you can't imagine how hard it is to send full color ads to her for proofing, it takes forever! :)

I don't personally use dial-up but one of my friends a while back had to se it because her wireless got knocked out or something and it drove her insane. It was hilarious. She always made me check her websites/email for her. -sighs-
