I Thought We Were Here to Help?

I'm not to sure why this site is here sometimes...I mean, why on earth do A LOT of you guys jump on someone for asking a legitimate question? It happens way to much here and I find it hard to stomach. You jump on people that don't take care of their animals properly & don't bother to ask questions, so why jump on someone who is asking questions & trying? Quit being so radical and just help the newbies with questions!! Or risk scaring the newbies off to fend for themselves.

Wow good question...There are too many. The last posting that I just read was in husbandry, the kid that wanted to know if it was safe to feed a house mouse. Now come on... it would of been different if he had already fed the snake the house mouse already, but he asked first and got ridiculed straight away!! WRONG!! If that was me...I'd say forget those people and find information somewhere else.

Thats a pretty sad nature to drive people away for wanting information.

I'm not really sure if creating thread ranting about what I feel is a very small and minor thing was really the way to positively make a change in this forum. It's always good to be reminded, but casting your own radical judgment on the entirety of a forum might not have the desired effect, but rather start something like an internet flame war. And we all know where those go.

Again, while each of us is entitled to our opinion, I certainly don't think the atmosphere of this site is so troubled and condescending that the validity of the site is brought into question.

There are moderators for a reason, a rep system in for a reason. Take some action with posts you find particularly distasteful and do something about it.

I urge any member to visit other reptile forums and get a feel for them. This site is definitely one of the best out there. I say that from my own experience, I'm a member of a lot of forums.

I agree, this does happen in threads sometimes. The best that you can do is not to worry about what others are saying, and be as helpful as you can by replying to the question being asked. If you really think that what someone says is wrong, then pm them and let them know.

It does happen to some extent on every forum, but if the site has good moderators then it happens less often. I have seen a little bit of that here but honestly not that much.

The worst part is if someone goes to far in their criticism, others (friends of the harsh poster) should calm them DOWN or rephrase things in a nicer way; not jump in and be equally as nasty to defend their friends bad behavior.

OMG!!! LOL!!! Just be more helpful and less condesending. That is all!! It is a legitimate complaint...I am wondering how many people with newbie questions have been driven away by this "radical" behavior. That is not what this site is for.

you can't determine somebodies mood or tone over the internet. If you ask me.... some people are just a little too sensitive. If you ask a question here your going to get an answer. And a good one at that, 99% of the time. If you stop asking question because somebody was a little short with you or put this face up after a comment :O Your going to be the one to miss on a lot of information. And in this hobby, you'll never stop asking questions or learning!

If it drives someone away for there to be one or two harsh replies in a thread FULL of helpful information, then maybe they weren't so serious in the first place. It would be nice for the internet to be populated by only the most kind wonderful folks around, but it's real life.
The thread you mention is not full of people jumping on anyone. The couple harsh replies could have been much nicer, but people also said "Hey tone it down, he came to ask".
If this site is too harsh for you, I don't suggest you visit many other ones out there, because this is a really nice forum, with good moderators.

Actually I think the one who stirred the pot was you. I read that thread again and not until you posted did it go anywhere bad.

Everyone gave great reasons why one shouldnt feed a caught house mouse, with logical thought out responses.

I'm sorry, I guess we really can't help you and address the issue you may have with a thread since you're not willing to post which threads you're talking about.

One other thing you may want to consider...A forum is a community made up of all different sorts of people with different backgrounds. Not one single forum out there will try to control the opinions or thoughts of ANY of its members. If someone has an opinion...well, they are certainly more than welcome to express their opinion...of course, there are some fine lines in which we have rules...noone is a aloud to trash talk, noone is aloud to be crude to one another...those are just some of our simple rules.

So..again...I ask you, please post a link to the threads which you have concerns about.

I have been around the net long enough to know that wolfy...I have seen a few posts here where someone will flat out say "Im not asking a certain question, because I know how it will be responded to". If you want to see someone take care of their snake properly then help them!!

What at first I thought was a legitimate concern is quickly on the road to turning into just one of those threads that ends up with "I'm never coming back here, you guys all suck!! Suck it!", but perhaps in not in such nice terms.

That right there is the problem.

Well ultimately this forum is here to benefit the animals. Typically it is the new, often very ignorant owners that get sniped at and they need the help most of all else their animals may suffer.

Most new posters can deal with one or two snipey comments if the other board members are more diplomatic and encourage them to stay, but it is something to be concerned about.
