Re: Bunny pictures + he has a name!
:) Of course I love buns too.. Rain was licking my feet this morning while i was getting ready for bed, she/he was frolicking, hopping and running around the vanity/bathroom last night.. it was sooo funny!
Ive been in contact with a lionhead bunny breeder, i might be able to pick one up tonight, holy moly.. buying "morph" bunnies are expensive lol.. they are going to help me confirm Rains gender and let us select a baby of the same sex (of course, i dont want babies!)

Re: Bunny pictures + he has a name!
Two males may not get along together so you will want either 2 females or a pair. You can have them spayed or neutered to avoid any babies--males can be neutered fairly early. I have 2 females, but I will be getting them both spayed as soon as they are old enough because cancer of the reproductive system later in life is quite common but fixing them lowers the chances of this quite a bit.
When you introduce your new bunny make sure to do it in an area that Rain is not familiar with and has not established his territory in yet. Give treats and distractions and let them get the initial rumbling around together out of the way under your supervision. My girls chased eachother and wrestled around a bit (light biting is okay) but they settled down fairly quickly and by that evening they were grooming eachother and snuggling up together. :)

Re: Bunny pictures + he has a name!
:) Emily, I dont know how you do it but you have such a wonderful vast experience and knowledge with so many species of animals.. it truly is amazing. Im hoping the lady with the lion head bunnies doesnt flake on me, she hasnt returned an email yet this morning and she sounded so gungho last night... everything happens for a reason though and im sure the right friend for rain will come into our lives. Thank you again for your help, I will be sure to let you know how things go :gj:

Ha well, thanks--I just read a lot and try to learn what I can from experience. :) If you do get a lionhead I definitely want to see some pics! (I'm sure that won't be an issue? ;) )

lol.. me not take pictures (boy does that line ring a bell) of COURSE i will get some photos!!
I really wanted a minilop, perhaps even more then the lion head but CANNOT seem to find any in the south florida area.. from a breeder, although the lion heads are SO CUTE. there is somone on CL who has one but its 14wks old, she hs no pictures, no additional info on it and i would need to drive 1+hr to get to her house.. no way am i going to go that far for a bunny i havnt even seen. The wildlife care center down here was an option but they want you to pay $50 for a single bunny and most of them are older... i may be being a brat but i would like something i personally can raise up with our family, our children, our schedule exc instead of the alternative, although that route isnt totally ruled out yet. i might take ride down there and see what they have... i do like rescuing but i also like the idea of getting a baby bunny from someone who has personally hand raised (meaning with nursing mommy there of course) it with children (the breeder ive been in contact with) from strong healthy lines for the same price...

Re: Bunny pictures + he has a name!
when we were kids our bunnys had saltlicks.. i havnt noticed that on the websites i have visited, do they need the extra salt/sodium in their diet?
What kind of food (brand of pellet) do you feed yours emily?

Re: Bunny pictures + he has a name!
I don't really have any experience with bunnies that were not raised with lots of handling (mine came from breeders with children that handled them every day), but I would definitely recommend ones that were raised with daily handling. You want a snuggle bunny--not a skittish scaredy bunny. :P
I feed my bunnies Mazuri rabbit pellets (I get it at PetSmart). The pellets should really only be in addition to hay, greens, veggies and the rest of their diet and not a main staple. Timothy hay is the best hay (most pellets have plenty of alfalpha in them already so you want to go with Timothy instead). Celery, brocolli (just the flowering part, not the stems), cilantro, fennel, parsley, chamomile flowers and small ammounts of carrot and apple are a good diet--there are lots more things I can add to this list I just don't remember off the top of my head but I will look in the book I have when I get home. That's basically what I feed mine though, in addition to some wild grasses and a very small amount of clover (too much upsets their stomachs). I grow most of their greens in planters on my deck in organic potting soil with no additives, that way I know exactly what they are getting. :)
If fed the correct diet you do not need to provide salt or mineral licks. Too much of those can actually make them sick.

Re: Bunny pictures + he has a name!
Justin & Laooda, thanks!!
Emily, thanks for that info.. you know now im going to have to get some of those plants today and grow mine own thank you very much lol.. which one specifically do you have planted? Im glad you agree with the "raising with children" thing.. i think that will make a world of a difference also. Although I had the BEST lop ear bunny growing up (She was the size of a cat though holy smokes!) I would dress her up in clothes and carry her around like a doll lol I remember being DEVESTATED when she finally passed away. Her name was snowflake.. i remember it like it was yesterday.. we had her, Thumper and Coco, coco would bite the ****ens out of you!
I can only hope ours will be as wonderful as snowflake for our family.

Re: Bunny pictures + he has a name!
I planted a bunch of stuff--I'll check all my seed packets tonight and let you know what it all was because honestly I don't remember it all off the top of my head (yes, I kept the seed packets because I knew I wouldn't remember!). :P I forgot dandelion greens--they love those! You will probably want to not allow your bunnies direct access to what you plant as you will be amazed at how quickly they will clean it out, roots and all--just pick their greens for them daily so your plants don't disappear. :)

Re: Bunny pictures + he has a name!
;) I would have the plants either in the kitchen if they can be housed indoors or on our balcony.. where the bunnies currently do not go. Thanks for giving me those names of the plants.. i will certainly look into finding some.
The lady with the lion head bunnies finally got back to me and is going to be sending me pictures soon and we plan to meet tonight :gj: ill be sure to share those photos when i get them. Im going to take Rain with me also so she can help me sex him/her.. wish me luck ;) (not that i should need it lol)

Re: Bunny pictures + he has a name!
Ok, well she mailed me some pictures and they are just really fuzzy bunnies.. im glad i didnt make the trip all the way up there for it. Were still looking for Rains perfect friend :) in the meantime Darren (SO) has been playing "fetch" with the bunny.. he rolls the ball away and Rain rolls it back to him. of course as soon as i got the video recorder out she stopped
Any suggestions for toys? Im thinking about going and getting her some..
