Its beautiful- thats what it is!! And I wish I had the luck to have a clutch that some 'new morph' or something came out that I was all confused-and happy. But I'm not one of those lucky ones. lol. Congrats! And yea, pictures of the parents, or just telling us what the parents are, would help.

If special turns out to be another version (allele) of the same gene as the lesser/mojave/phantom/Vin Russo/latte white snake complex then it would not be possible to be both homozygous special and mojave based on there only being room for 2 copies of the same gene (one from each parent). It will be interesting to see if Tom's breedings disprove or support special being another mutant allele of the same gene as mojave.

This little one was produced from breeding a Pastel Crystal to a "Special"... There were 6 eggs in this clutch and 2 that are Crystal related... Since they donot look like either the original Crystals or Pastel Crystals I am hoping they are Supers...:please:
I never really thought that they were involved with the "white snake complex" do the the fact that when crossed with the Mojave and the Lesser there was not a white snake... From my knowledge when you breed snakes from the group together you produce white snakes -- Mojave/Russo, Lesser/Mojave, etc... But, I guess will have to see what these bad boys look like when they crawl out...

I think maybe the "Special" already has a name. No matter how it may be "officially" named someday, I think it will be hard to stop referring to it as "Special." :P

I have been getting alot of crap (from friends) about calling it a "Special", especially since I call these strange looking Mojaves (from the Crystal clutches) "Special Mojaves"... So I have been thinking about changing the name of the "Special" to a "Baker" (like a Russo), so I can hear people talking about "Super Bakers"!:banana::rolleye2:

Has a crystal ever produced a normal or only mojave and special?

That wouldn't prove that mojave and special are alleles but it would fail to disprove it.

The special mojave certainly is the complication. Maybe they are a red herring. Some other gene or just really nice mojaves.

I think the “hidden” mutation that turns a lesser into a platy is also in this complex. Seems that there is some variability in how the different versions react. Special seems to lighten more than hidden and also to have an effect when homozygous (unlike hidden). Also, phantom makes white with lesser but dark homozygous. Even if special doesn’t turn out to be in this group it’s plenty interesting.

I don't even want to fathom a guess, but I would like to congratulate you Tom. Well done. It appears that you have bred the Crystals into some very intersting projects.

Nice breeding Tom. I'm just north of you in central O.C. Way to represent BIG for the Left Coast. The dam of those hatchlings does not look like any Mojave I have seen, and therfore, might in fact -- be "special". Congrats! Can't wait to see them after a shed.
