is the egg going bad?

Its molding.. Clean it off, Get some liquid bandaid and put a tiny layer on it where the mold is, and hope for the best.

any suggestions for cleaning it off? lol.. silly question i know but i dont wanna screw it up. Also, what if no liquid bandaid? we would need to go get some.

any suggestions to prevent this from happening again?

When I do it, I just use a papertowel and wipe off as much as I can. Nothing else. (I'm paranoid of using chemicals on the eggs, so I don't, but I have never not, so maybe someone else has advice)

If you plan to breed, liquid bandaid will be your friend, so invest in some :)

As for it not happening, it is something that just happens. The egg may be just bad, so you can't prevent it...

the egg cleaned right up fine.. there is obvious damage to it though :( we will be going to get some liquid bandaid in the next few minutes. i did take new pics of how it looks. BBS with that.

It may not have been fertile to begin with. Keep it until it turns to mushy cheese just in case, but don't worry about it if it goes bad.

Sometimes mold growth on eggs is due to too much moisture in the incubator, but if you are using the right ratio of perlite/water or hatchrite you can simply wipe condensation off of the top of your container once or twice per week and that will take care of it. You just don't want the condensation dripping on the eggs.

Yeah, I'm not too sure about the other egg. See the darker circle around the pink part? That shouldn't really be there and it's odd that it is visible through the shell like that. I wouldn't hold my breath on either of them, but you never know. The good news is that leos are fairly productive as long as they are in good breeding condition so you'll get plenty more eggs. :)

;) thanks Emily and Heather.. I think any experience with them is worth it.. even if they dont make it, we will have at least some experience under our belt with eggs before the BP's have theirs. Considering we have moved and everything else with this little clutch i wasnt expecting much.

does the fact that the eggs continue to grow say anything??

is there any hope for them do you think? (of course were going to continue incubating them but the eggs do continue to grow well)

she laid on 6-3.. this is going to be the longest wait EVER lol

They will grow just by absorbing water, so that's not really a way to tell anything. I have had infertile crested eggs that grew at the same rate as fertile eggs laid at the same time for 60+ days (ususally they mold pretty quickly if they are not fertile but sometimes not--so you just can't tell by the rate of growth).

A better way to tell is to continue candling--at this point you should have less of a cheerio and more overall veining and some dark areas where the gecko is starting to develop. For instance I think one of the first dark spots you can see is the where the eyes are forming.

looks like one is empty.. the other one is glowing red (its the one which has had mold on it) but otherwise no obvious veins..

how many times does a female/male pair need to breed before you know if one or the other isnt producing? this is the second clutch for the pair so far so i know we still have time im just curious...

there is obviously a difference between the eggs.. should i just go ahead and trash the other one since it doesnt look like anything?

Don't throw either egg away until it is like soft moldy cheese all the way through. The first one does not look fertile at all, but get into the habit of incubating everything just in case. Eventually you'll have an egg that something hatches out of and you'll be glad you kept it. :)

It's hard to really say when you can tell for sure if one or the other gecko might not be fertile but it's not really that common. I know we are talking about leos here, but I had a pair of cresteds one time and the female laid about 5 infertile clutches before she started laying fertile ones so sometimes you just kind of have to wait and see.

the one egg (That looked like there was somethign in it) is kinda squishy.. not stinky or anything yet but certainly has a different feel to it now.. thoughts?

well.. i opened the thing today with the eggs and there was a terrible stench on top of the egg looking otherwise rotten. Me being the curious person I am had planned on getting rid of the eggs (for the sake of the house.. it was BAD) but first wanted to open the eggs and see what was inside, if anything at all. The "white" egg was pretty much all tissue/liquid no signs of any kind of baby while the other one when I opened it up did have what appeared to have two eyes.. that was as far as the development was, everything else was white and hints of pink mushy/clumpy mess. So is it possible it was fertilized (thus the eyes which were symmetrical and near one another as eyes would be, they even had iris's) but failed to develop any further? Wouldnt the baby be more developed then that considering they were due to hatch in approx 3wks?

We do have another chance here in just a couple more weeks as the female is gravid again and you can see her eggs in her belly.

the one egg probable was good but the baby may have ended up deformend hard to say since I dont think to many are cutting open fertile eggs to see developemet phases though that would be very interesting ( and no I do not volenteer to do it )lol
