    Thinking bout bloods...
I really like bloods, but i dont have one...
i was wondering a few things...

    questions:
    1. How much should i pay for a "norm" blood male?
    2. Cage setup similar to a Ball python?
    3. Doctile? loving like a ball?
    4. What would i feed them full grown? i assume rats...
    5... ANY OTHER HELPFUL INFO?

i would love to know this, im looking more and more into them and i just love how they look, and how they dont get too big...

    thanks.

They definitely don't need rabbits. They have very slow metabolisms and can easily get obese. Try f/t rats. They are VERY easy to feed f/t to, at least in my experience with the one STP I had.

A friend of mine has 5 of 6 bloods dont remember exactly how many, and they are def to big for rats. even the "colossal" rats dont come close. But like I said, Im not an expert, and neither is he. they get rabbits every other week

Just because they can, doesn't mean they should. Email Kara @ NERD, she has quite a few bloods and short tail pythons under her care.

In my very humble opinion, if they are big enough to take a rabbit, they most likely don't need to be fed every other week....

Feeding girth-sized prey items to adult blood pythons on a frequent basis makes about as much sense as running a Honda Accord on racing fuel for every day use.

To echo what's already been said, bloods & STP's do have very slow metabolisms, especially as adult animals. They also tend to have TREMENDOUS feeding responses & will eat just about any time you try to offer them food. This is where the whole "just because you can, doesn't mean you should or that it's healthy" thing comes into play.

Even my very biggest girls get medium (and very occasionally, a large here or there) rats every 10-14 days or so, and these are genuine 6'+ females that average 25 lbs, and are anywhere from 7-13 years of age.

Mine likes to try and bluff you out when he's grumpy. His favorite move is to turn around and face you and give off a hiss but he won't bite. Once you have him out of the tank though he's cool.

I did however get to see him pitch a huge fit with my vet. His mouth was wide open and he was swinging it around looking for anything to bite. On the way home he hissed at me through the pillow case for the whole entire ride. Man that snake can get really pissy.

PIGS? I guess you mean guinea pigs. Although I thought rabbits can get quite a lot larger than guinea pigs, so if they can eat rabbits, they should be able to take any size "pig".

Mostly I'm laughing at the mental image this brought up.... can you imagine if the snake did the eat it alive thing... squeeeaaallll!

I have feed my adult black an XXL rat about once a month and even that seemed like it's too much for her metabolism. They definitely don't need rabbits. With her feeding response, you'd think I was starving her.

And she's going on a diet.

About the setup thing..I would never keep a blood in a glass tank. You'd never get the right humidity. It's more important that you get your setup right with a blood than with a ball, before you get your blood. They are more sensitive to husbandry issues.

Right now i have my blood male 1 1/2 in a CB70 he will be in there for a while but soon i will move him into this,

    https://www.reptilebasics.com/2x4-Ca...h-p-16237.html

That will house a full grown male, but females do get bigger then males.

    Re: Thinking bout bloods...
You're going to want to start him out in a tub....in fairly cramped quarters. Bloods like to be almost cramped to feel secure. How big depends on the size of blood you plan on getting. I keep my 6 year old adult female in a boaphile 421D and my 3 year old sarawak (boreno) male will be moving into in an animal plastics T10 when i get back from vacation and have a chance to put it together.

I can promise you that isn't true.

What is worse than their bite, however, is when they musk you.

    ha, fun,
i keep timmy the blood [not just timmy, its 'timmy the blood'] dont ask
in a 41qt tub in the same rack my balls are in... shes just around 4 foot now... and gets small/med rats every two weeks... or two smalls, every 3, depends on what the other snakes refuse... but generally one every 2 weeks....
she hates me tho... huffs and puffs, i dont pick her up without a pillowcase, ahha cause im a big baby. i know it wouldnt be as bad as my boa's love bite, but i just dont want her to bite me hahha.

she loves soaking in her dish too :)
