how hot is 2 hot

Hey everyone good news my prego female "TOT" gave birth to 7 babies, but i do live in Phoenix AZ so as you know it gets really hot, so i was wondering how hot is 2 hot at like around what temp will the rats DIE becuase i dont want that to happen, but its over 100 everyday and during the middle to afternoon hours my room is getting really hot??? any ideas ,,,,,,,,,,thankx andrew

and one more question, if i clean her tub is it possible that if i touch the babies and get my sent on them she will reject them??? and possibly kill them

I think at 80 degrees you need to start taking measures to keep them cool. They do overheat easily, and I think some will succumb to temps in the mid 80's if not properly ventilated and cooled.

As far as how hot is too hot, I really don't know, mine are in AC currently and will be once they have their own building with Oklahoma summers lol.

However, I have never had any trouble touching rat pups, even from fresh born pinkies. I change all the cages once a week and occasionally I will have moms that just dropped, and I still change them too. Rats are nice that way :), no worries.

cool stuff i was just worried she would not like me touching her babies, see thats where i get worried 80' yea not possbile, i have a fan going on them right now but im just trying to keep it below 90' in the middle of the day, phoenix is so freakin hot!!!! i hate it

I spray my rats down with water if it gets that hot. There was another thread about the heat in this section I just posted in this morning.

You should be able to handle the pinkies right away without the mother harming them. Caution!!!! The mama will be very territorial and she may jump on your hand and bite you to protect her babies. It happened to me once and she bit me in several places. My suggestion is to move her out first and then handle the babies.

Just remember that the warmer it is, the more water they drink, the more they pee. I try and keep it below 70 for my rats. 1/2 the walls are underground in the room so it stays cool enough.

I agree wish i could but i just cant not possible, i have them in my bathroom with the door closed with a fan and its around 85ish
trust me thats cool, haha they seem to be doing ok and yes they do drink alot of water ALOT!!!! but there breeding giving birth so they really dont seem to mind it that much must be some AZ rats haha

Yeah I've got mine In my parents basement right now. The temps seem to be ideal. It stays extremely constant at 70-72 degrees even when it's like 95-100 degrees outside and the upstairs is roasting like it's been the last few days out here in NH. Is that a good temp for them you think? They don't seem to be having any problems with it.

For rodents I keep it as cool as possible. Like Jake said, higher temps, more water they drink, more pee, more smell. Also, I have found a drop in breeding production in higher temps. I don't know if others have experienced the same thing, but for me they produced far less when I had less control over the temps. I keep it under 75.

Yes but remember too cool isn't good either. Especially if they happen to be near a draft, they can get sick easily.

I suggest, what's comfortable to you, is more than comfortable to them. I find 68-72 is a nice range to be in year round, and my rats enjoy it too.

Do you think a fan blowing on the tubs would be ok i started this last night and it keeps there temps under 85 :D:D they seem to be much happier and arent sucking down water haha, but it is like a constanat breeze could this get them sick ? even tho its still pretty hot like 78-82

A fan is fine. Air circulation is a good idea with rats!

I've frozen water bottles and put them beside the tubs so that they would have one cool side to lay against if necessary. I've read you can put them in with the rats but I'm afraid it might get too cool for a pinky that can't get away.

I keep my rats in our greenhouse and there is always air circulating and unless something breaks down it never gets above 85.

A constant breeze directly on them when cool can very well get them sick. Rats do have sensitive respiratory systems, with all the dust flying around and being in a cool draft will take it's toll.

When it's very warm, I'd keep it directly on them. If it's under 80, make it oscillate.

He isn't talking about it being cool. He is talking about 80-85 degrees. When my rat room was too hot in my old place I always kept the fan blowing on the rack. Never had a problem with illness. Now if he is using a 10 gallon tank and is going to put a fan blowing directly down into it, that's another story.

I wasn't arguing, I was expanding. I don't want people to think that blowing fans on rats all the time is necessary.

If it's over 80, it's fine. But anything under can do more harm then good. :)
