my new favorite animal
I have a lot of favorite snakes but this one really takes the cake. I'm thrilled to be working on this project as it is just coming off the ground. (Thanks Tracy Barker!)
I believe this morph will give all the big pillar mutations a serious run for their money!! Few of them have me captivated like this girl!!
This mutation is everything that typical axanthic lines are not...

Re: my new favorite animal
That snake really reminds me of a dark SK axanthic, similar to the one shown in the Barker's book.
Nice pickup!

Justin
Hm...well if I had Lavender Albinos and pieds, I'd go for the lavender albino project first. If I had both...well then I'd breed em both and start my hets....
Lavender Albinos are not going to be as common as pieds...possibly fewer people working on the black axanthic lavender albino?
I think it would make great contrast in a pied though. Would that be a Oreo ball? :P
-
Re: my new favorite animal
Very cool Justin, I think that will be a great addition to your collection! I wonder if breeding it to a lavender would make dark purple albinos, something comparable to the purple albino retics. I think breeding it to a pied would make a very contrasting, handsome snake.

Justin,
First of all I woould like to congratulate you on that beautiful addition to your collection. Don't listen to all those other people, I would throw that in with some Clown. Now, I would like to ask you about the above statement. What makes you believe that it is recessive. If I understand the breedings correctly, VPI broought in the original animals from Africa, and bred them together, but have never done any other breedings. If that is the case, they could still be co-dominant (and be the Homozygous form). Now I know the odds of bringing in 2 or more animals from the wild that have a similar appearance, and have them all be Homozygous Co-dominant animals, is a long shot. However, with little breeding info on the project, I was wondering if Dave or Tracy gave you any other info that may lead you to believe that they are Recessive.
What I want to see, and I asked Tracy if they tried or not, is if they are compatible with any of the other established Axanthic lines.
Congrats Again,

Thanks! I actually had not seriously considered the clown breeding yet... that would definitely be awesome. That's what I love about this animal, nearly every combo seems like it would be awesome. Others I can hardly imagine... what would the pastel or spider combo look like?
You correctly understand the breedings up to this point. It has been visual x visual only. In the two clutches there were no normals or supers.
It is definitely possible the original imported animals were already supers and it is a codominate trait. That would definitely be an interesting twist. I think Tracy and I are both leaning toward recessive simply because all other axanthic lines have been recessive. On the other hand, these do not look like any other axanthics and in a way its apples and oranges.
There is no breedings to help prove compatibility with existing axanthic lines, but because most of them are incompatible even though they look nearly identical as babies, I would be shocked if this one was compatible while appearing to be a completely different mutation. Time will tell!
Thanks for your input Tim!

Justin,
I think you should now consider the Clown option, as I think it would be great. I know there was no compatibility testing,k as I talked to Tracy about it shortly after they hatched. However, I think it is a definite must in the near future. I do have a feeling that it will not be compatible with any other line, but would not be surprised if it was compatible with the SK line (only because of their dark strain they have been producing). Like you and Tracy, I fully believe they are recessive, but only because of the oddsa of them not being so. I just wanted to throw out there that it has yet to be proven how the trait is inhereted, even though it has been proven to be a genetically inhereted trait.
Either way, I amglad to see the morph make it's move intoother collections, and I think that one has made it's way in to some great hands.

Thanks for your added input. I remember seeing pics of some of SK's darker axanthics but its been quite a while. Do you have a one of the pics saved away somewhere for comparison?
