Re: My first Eggs!!!!
thanks, ill update this post when things develop.
there are actually 5 eggs. i didnt find one until like an hour later because she wasnt coiled around it. it was cold to the touch by the time i put it in the incubator. i am worried about that one and another that rolled when i uncoiled her. all of them candled awesome with veins. oh well this is all a new experience that ive been waiting on for over 3 years!
im using hatch rite and a homemade incubator and a herpstat.

Does that egg box seal good? I usually throw away the lids and use glad press-n-seal. That's the only reason I could see those eggs dimpling so early.

Re: My first Eggs!!!!
it seals alright... but i would think as long as its 99% it doesnt matter. is that not the case? should i go get some press n seal?
-
Re: My first Eggs!!!!
If your confident the seal is good than don't bother with the press-n-seal. The problem is if its not sealed good the medium will dry out, the humidity in the air may still be 99 but the medium will suck water from the egg. I would double check the medium is not too dry. You probably know how to tell but to save an extra post i will tell you. Just take a handful of medium, squeeze it into a ball shape and if it holds together and no water comes out then that's not your problem. Don't expect it to stick together perfectly like a snowball some may fall off but it should clump together.
edit: those instructions are for vermiculite/perlite but I believe hatchrite should be the same.

Re: My first Eggs!!!!
hmmm good point. im going to put some press n seal on tonight when i get home from work. it cant hurt.

Re: My first Eggs!!!!
good job on the clutches. i was curious.. how much did your girl that laid 7 eggs weigh before she was gravid?
-
Re: My first Eggs!!!!
thanks!
she was 1508 grams. she is only 970 after laying.
-
Re: My first Eggs!!!!
thanks a lot. im doing a some future science project research and trying to gather some data. i have a gravid from two het albinos also. let the gene gods be with us HAHA

Re: My first Eggs!!!!
Congrats on the clutch. Now is the time to start honing your candling skills. At day 35, you should be able to candle the eggs, and know how many Albinos you get. Good luck with that clutch.
-
Re: My first Eggs!!!!
well its day 35... how do i go about figuring out how many albinos i have? i was under the impression that the pattern is the last thing to develop so they will probably all look like albinos... no?

Re: My first Eggs!!!!
Mike, you should definitely be able to see pattern on some of the snakes by day 35. Pattern is one of the first things to develop. Color comes in later. If you start candling now, you should see slight pattern on the normals, and that pattern will get darker as the days go by. The Albinos will look like a mass in the egg, but you won't be able to see any pattern. Also the Albino eggs seem to glow brighter, because they reflect some of the light back out of the egg. Even if you cut your eggs at day 55, they babies will still gain color up until shortly after they hatch.

Re: My first Eggs!!!!
thanks tim... as soon as i get home from work im candling them!
-
Re: My first Eggs!!!!
Let us know how it goes. I believe candling is an art, and you get better the longer you do it. The only downfall is that you can find out what is in the egg a good three weeks before it hatches. That'll make the time slow down sometimes. Take me for example: I candled some eggs 12 days ago, and found out that we have 2 Leucistics in the egg, but, we are still 7 days away from being able to cut them. It seems like the days go by so slow.

Re: My first Eggs!!!!
no kidding! 2 lucys would be awesome to hatch out.
i just feel fortunate that for my first eggs i have a chance of hatching an albino.
for candling do you pick up the eggs and try to get different angles or do you just leave them in the egg box and candle them that way?

Leave them in the box...
Don't move them at all. Just candle from whatever angle you can

Re: My first Eggs!!!!
We pick ours up and flip them all different directions, in an attempt to find the best spot. We just make sure to put the up mark back up when we replace the egg. That is how we do it, but some may not want to take that risk. It has never harmed any of our hatchlings to date.
