Took a few pics after cleaning the cage

Some of you guys/gals weren't kidding about Bloods being picky for fresh water. Everytime I fill up his bowl he goes in for a drink.

Here is my current concern with this Blood: He likes to push on the glass at night and he'll do it until he rubs his nose raw!

See the black spot on the tip of his mug? That's from him pushing on the glass. He doesn't do it as often anymore but it still makes me worry.
Re: Took a few pics after cleaning the cage
SHawwwEEET! He is still a good looking boy! I love his partial dorsal striping. :gj:
:whisper:
Don't tell anyone... but I may just be heading towards a new purchase in the possibly near future.

It's a 2x3 I purchased from Replite Basics. http://www.reptilebasics.com/2x3-Cag...h-p-16286.html
I installed a radiant heat panel on the top and use a Helix to regulate the temp.
That little black cord by the water bowl is the probe from the Helix thermostat. I drilled a hole in the back of the cage and used a piece of duct tape to hold it in place (on the outside). Sometimes the snake can move the probe a little bit but it always stays under the hot spot.
Re: Took a few pics after cleaning the cage
That's what I thought it was for. I'm having trouble getting my radiant heat panels running perfectly.
You can't put the probe on the ground. When they lay on. The RHP will run full blast for who knows how long.
On top of the paper like that I don't see how itd make sure the floor was the right temp.
I've got my probe on the side of the wall close to the floor. And its working ok. Still trying to fine tune it. That way they can't lay on it.
I've also heard people putting the probe on the cool side. And with bloods setting it at like say 80. And saying the hot spot would be the 88ish temps. But I'm unconvinced.
How's your setup working for you?
Sorry for the long post.
Re: Took a few pics after cleaning the cage
niiiiiice. i have a hog island boa who loves to rub. nothing i can do about it. he's still doing it even though he's in a bigger more secure enclosure. his face is all swelled up.
i have no idea how to make them stop. worried me before but since mine is now eating regularly... i'm not worried anymore.
also he saw the vet and dave barker even gave us his 2 cents on the matter :)

I haven't had any problems with it. Hot side temp is always 88. I use a tayler temp/humidity gauge to double check everything whenever I record the temps and everything has worked out really well.
My wife and I do a pretty job of monitoring my snakes cages. The only thing that happens is when the snake splashes some water around and the Helix will read a few degrees cooler but the RHP is pretty small and can't get too hot. The panel itself isn't big enough to generate too much heat if you know what I mean.

Yup I got it, thank you Kara. I'll let you know if it chills my guy out.
These are the gadgets I use to double check and monitor temps and such. I just cleaned all the cages so I haven't put them back in yet.
http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...ngo/tps002.jpg
The 2 little ones are what I use to check cool side temps.
The 2 grey digital Taylors I use to check hot side temps for my BP and Blood. They suck for reading humidity so they are for temps only.
The big ugly square Taylor is what I use to double check my cages and read humidity. It's the most accurate one.
And of course there is the reading off the Helix itself for temps.
I have a humidifier in the room to control humidity. The room itself is very small so it's super easy to bump the settings up or down.
This reminds me I should make things easier and buy a temp. gun. Can any of you recommend a good one for me? I'll order one up tomorrow. I always forget to do this.
Re: Took a few pics after cleaning the cage
Did kara have a tip for you to help with the nose rubbing?
I use and highly recommend the 412l? from Reptile Basics.
Its the yellow one for like 50 some odd dollars. I love mine.
Hope this helps.

She recommended I drop my hot side to 85 or 84 and see if it stops my Blood from being so figity. I'm going to try it out for a few days and see how it goes.
I'll have a look at that temp gun. Thanks 2kdime! :)

I used to think it was insecurity. This started happening when I first took away his hides because he out grew them and right after that he started pushing on the glass.
I went out and bought a kitty liter box and cut a hole in the front. It made for a nice hide but he still continued rubbing away.
Re: Took a few pics after cleaning the cage
Earl, has he stopped rubbing as much since you dropped the hot side? I'm very close to moving my dark girl to a new cage... and I don't know how she's going to handle all the room ya know?

Nope he hasn't done it at all. I'm going to give it a few more days just to be sure it's working but so far so good. :gj:
I can always tell when he does it because there will be smudges and smears on the glass all along the bottom and corners and there is no sign of any of that.
I dropped the temp from 88 to 85, cool side still is at 80.
Re: Took a few pics after cleaning the cage
Great set up Earl. I was going to suggest dropping the temps as I had the same problem a few years back and this was what worked for me as well but I see the Blood Goddess has already suggested it.
I love seeing other peoples bloods and thats a fab looking blood you have there.
