Plan on switching to tub ,..question?
Hey everyone, I currently have my 580 g. ball in a 20 gall tank, and was looking to switch over to a tub setup. Now theres a few things i can probably bring over from the tank (hides, 2 Herpstats, 2 UTH's). But my question is how do i setup a tub??? I know it's easier to maintain temps and humidity, but am just curious as to how you guys set yours up. Should I just stick a UTH under the warmside and hook it up to a Herpstat, then put a hide on the cooler side, then put a water bowl in the middle(more near the UTH)?? And I know I got to monitor my temps, i have several digital thermometers and hygrometers soooo, all in all is this about right for a tub setup??
    thanks guys, :) :snake:

    You got it!!!!!
Your gonna wanna make some holes, more or less depending on the humidity.
Check out the tub pics in my images.

How many hole's should i make to start out with til i can get the humidity reading right? And how big of a tub for close to a 600 gram ball?

    Have you seen these....

I get one to replace my tub and love it!
I hooked my herpstat (set at 91 it makes the hot side a perfect 94) to it put my hides, big metal water dish in there and filled it with newspaper. It is great, looks good and holds perfect temps and humidity.

The Reptile Basics cages are awesome... but for tubs this is what I do:

    http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...s/Venustub.jpg

    http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...ks/Corntub.jpg

Those are both 64qt Sterelite tubs, @26x15x10. Bungee cords are used in conjunction with the side latches and I've kept corns and BPs in them with no trouble. I add the substrate, hides, water dish, Acurite and a few plants and voila!
Of course, corn snakes get a lot more holes soldered into their tub and lid than BPs, but IMO it's better to put in too many holes and cover some than keep having to take the snake out to add more holes over and over. Hole numbers are a very changing factor and just depend on the environment your tub will be in.
For example, I just moved from an apt. on the 3rd floor to one on the 1st. In the old place, humidity was hard to keep up, but in this new apt. I've had to add holes to my BP QT tubs to LOWER the humidity. Same area, same block even... go figure. :)

    Ok, I've ranted enough.

So that already has the flexwatt installed for the belly heat? Looks and sounds like a pretty cool deal. Does that cage hold humidity well?

Can you show the bottom of it? or describe how it is? I currently have a UTH attached to the warm side..but I'd rather use something else.

As for the RBI cages, they are great and quite nice to look at as well. :) Supposedly they hold humidity perfectly, tho my own brief experience was contrary to that. Of course, I did a lot of things wrong in how I set it up the first time, so I'll let you know how things go the second time around once I fix my mistakes.

The bottom of which? The RBI cage or the tub? :) For the tub, I have a 10gallon sized ZooMed UTH taped underneath each end with foil tape and that does the trick for heat. I need two here because the winters are rather harsh and unpredictable, and even summer can have its colder days.
You can also use Flexwatt under free-standing tubs, and many people prefer it, but whatever you use you must have it on a thermostat of course.

What are your temps set at on each of your UTHS? I just got the same exact tub. :)

Re: Plan on switching to tub ,..question?
I have the QT tubs for BPs temps at 84 cool, 94 warm - tho they waver about two degrees both ways because I'm using two ReptiTemp stats on them (all I have available). The temps get much more stable when the UTHs are on a Johnson or Ranco, like my corn tubs are.

Those are great tubs. The latches are really secure and the tub itself holds up wonderfully to bumps and shoves (inside and out).

Re: Plan on switching to tub ,..question?
OK...i just got my tub and set it up today.. Heres the layout...

    *substrate- 3 layers of newspaper
    *hides- 1 on the warmside
    *water dish in middle
    * got a zoomed UTH on warmside under hide and have the herpstat that it's connected to set to 96
    * got a zoomed UTH on the coolside and have the herpstat connected and set to 85
    * i have 20 holds drilled along the side of the tub on each side (the long sides)

But what i don't get are my temps, i have 2 flukers digital thermometers/hygrometers. The one on the warmside measures 78 and 75% humidity, and the coolside measures 75 and 76% humidity??? I know these temps are low.. But when i put my hand on top of the newspaper it feels significantly warm so i know he's getiing belly heat under the hide for sure.
How can i raise my temps??... I figured having two UTH's would do it? Someone help me out?

Re: Plan on switching to tub ,..question?
    Hi,

I would still add a hide to the cool side. Are you measuring the temps inside the hides? (not sure if the flukers have probes as I dont own any). I ask because it does sound a little like the flukers are measuring ambient air temps.

I wouldn't worry too much what temps the thermostats themselves are set to but rather adjust them till it keeps the temps inside the tub where you want it. Depending on your setup this can mean setting the thermostat a bit higher.

Do your heatmats have a gap between them and the tub? You could try only 2 layers of newspaper and check what the temps are under the paper as well as there is a fair chance the snake will find its way under there at some point.

Where is the thermostat probe attatched?

Ok i have an accurite with the probe under the warmside hide under the newspaper. It's reading 90.1 all the time. But my air temp in the tank is around 79?? And i have my herpstat adjusted to 98 to help get the temp up a lil bit.

Re: Plan on switching to tub ,..question?
Well i went and bought one of those adjutable clamp dome lamps w/ a 50 watt infared bulb. Im using the 50 watt infared bulb on half the tub ( on the warm side) Im going to monitor it and adjust things accordingly, but that extra heat from that lamp on the warm half of the tub seems to be doing the trick. It started heating up a few degrees, and is starting to help my humidity come down (from a high 85% to around 61%) Hopefully things will stabalize and all will be good for my ball :)

    Hey,

I am new to these forums and was just wondering if the mini cage on http://www.reptilebasics.com/Mini-Cage-p-16232.html will fit all size ball pythons or just young ones. If just young ones, at what size would I need to upgrade to another one of the reptile basics tanks and which one would i need to upgrade to? Thanks, these tanks seem very nice and would like to purchase one.

I have the 2x3x12 size RBI cages (6 of them). I think that the mini cage is too small for an adult ball python. This cage size is meant for small or juvy ball pythons. Whe they get too big for the enclosure, you'll need to upgrade.
I see my 1000+ gram girls in the 2x3 and am glad I got the big ones! :gj:
