New ASF Project!
Well Jamie and I decided to start breeding our own ASFs. They've worked so well for our problem eaters and don't have the normal offensive rat odor -- seemed like an easy choice.
Here's the little guys on their way home in their snug little bucket.

You can see a few of the girls are preggers and look ready to pop at any moment.

They'll be in aquariums until the production hopefully expands much more and we can build these guys some racks.

Special thanks to the "ASF King of New Jersey" for getting us started. :D :P

Re: New ASF Project!
Alright, I'm jealous! Im starting to want asfs more and more after seeing yours:) what kind of water bottles are you using?
-
Re: New ASF Project!
They're just small plastic ones. We were going to use glass but these were the only ones that would fit the aquariums we have right now.
-
Re: New ASF Project!
I hope they are glass.... hahaha...

Re: New ASF Project!
nice pick up,it's hard to find females that large around here.BTW you do have long hemostats with rubber tips right? have fun !
-
Re: New ASF Project!
i think you need to buy some more snakes. Cause we have 2 pairs and produce enough for 5 snakes and still have enough to sell/give away.
-
Re: New ASF Project!
Oh they look nice Amy - congrats! I want some of those light, red eyed ones (the ASF equivalent to an albino I guess). Can't find any of those locally though but I'm on the hunt for them to add to our own growing colonies of ASF's.
-
Re: New ASF Project!
what size tanks are you using and what ratio?
-
Re: New ASF Project!
My ASFs went thru 7 plastic water bottles before I gave in and bought the expensive glass ones. They are harder to mountin a tank, but it can be done. They WILL chew through anything you put in the tank that isnt glass or metal. The record for a single ASF to chew thru one of my plastic water bottles was ~3 hours. BTW I want those lighter colored ones in my colony too!!!

Thats what I was hoping otherwise you would be over run soon.
Nice looking breeders though. Your females look about as big as ours. We dont have any of the albino ones yet. I have found them but they are charging 20 bucks a rat for them. To me its just not really worth it.. So the only odd color I have is black and gray brindling with white.

Connie,
I think you may be surprised with your "pinks", because all the ones we have produced are born with hair. Not completely covered in it, but they look funny not being completely bald.
p.s. I meant to comgratulate Amy and Jamie on their newest rodent project. Have fun with them, I love ours. They are great animals, and a joy to work with and watch. Also, we have had a plastic water bottle in with the small group we have in an aquarium for about a year now, and they have never chewed it up.

Thanks Tim! Seeing how the picky eaters took to them and how little smell they produce it was a no brainer to get a small colony going. The water bottles are in a metal guard which protects the bottom. We'll see if they chew them up!

Re: New ASF Project!
the bottoms arnt the issue with the plastic bottles... i have th metal guard hangers for them too but some how the climbed to the top of the cage and chewed on the bottle up there.. watch out for that those ASF find a way to get you :)

Re: New ASF Project!
Have fun with them. I was told they where bad biters but I have only gotten one bite from them and it was from a VERY pregnant female as I was picking out some to feed to my snakes. I would put a wheel in their cages. I have one in each one of mine and they used it ALL the time. Helps them burn off the extra energy and they don't chew as much. Oh one word of note they can JUMP and will jump. I have already lost two (one my cat caught and one my dog caught) to excapes :( Good luck and have fun :D

You got me there! I think if you look back, a lot of people had the same sentiments. I'm addicted to the crack rats! The snakes like them a lot too. After seeing how one of my males that regularly fasted for most of the year ate one in a second and then started pounding regular rats, I'm convinced.

Haha, not "calling you out" but thought it was funny. I too thought I would never get them and I just got 2 trios the other day and I already want more!

Re: New ASF Project!

Already got that done bro. The plastic ones were defective and weren't working properly. Got the glass and all is well!
